A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

Discussion and voting on future monthly themes takes place on the "Nominations, Themes and Statistics for A Cover A Day" thread.  Click here to view the thread.

  • I know it's the Silver Age! I know it's Wally Wood! But I will always think that THE MATADOR was below a D-Lister!

(Though I now wonder if he ever met the Man-Bull? Or Tauros from the Zodiac?)

  • Aquaman #1. The fire-trolls, as far as I can remember, never made another appearance. As I'm sure you know this is a famous Nick Cardy cover, and I'm posting this as I don't think I'll be around on 31st August. Incidentally I read that a 9.6 copy of this comic sold for $38,400 in 2019.

  • I was planning to post the covers to the other two issues (Amazing Spider-man 117 & 118 today) but instead here's Daredevil''s only(?) battle against minor villain Death's Head, courtesy of the Grand Comics Database.

  • It's been a while since this big idiot appeared in this thread, so here are two different #20s:

  • Uranium was another "evil" robot who only showed up once. As so many did... Doctor Will Magnus never was satisfied with good enough being enough.

    • Did DC ever collect the non Batman Brave and the Bold team ups before the Dark Knight permanently took the lead spot?

    • There was the 2005 The Brave and the Bold Team-Up Archive that reprinted #50-56, #59 (minus the Metamorpho solo stories). Usually the B&B stories are put into the heroes' separate collections.

  • Here we go again, with another of the Legion's minor villains, Magpie, who is so minor that he's barely visible on this cover:

    • IIRC, the Magpie was connected to BENN PARES, another minor one-shot villain from Superboy #213.

Among his abilities was having a porn 'stache!
