The other day there was a brief power failure. When I logged on, the external drive was inaccessible. I attached it to a different computer and ... well, the last 15 years or so of stuff I'd saved wasn't there. Instead was a bunch of folders I'd never seen before and important-looking hierarchy crap.

I don’t claim to be an expert, but my external drive saves folders under the name of the computer it was last installed to back up. Attaching it to a different computer probably set it up to use that computer’s name as the first sort, first folder. The backup drive should have at least one folder at that level that is labeled with the name of the previous computer. It is likely that the folders you’re trying to find are under the folder named for the previous computer and are unchanged.

Failing that, even if the folders were marked as “deleted” they can be restored by an expert. “Deleting” doesn’t actually delete anything. Instead t changes the first character to “?.” This wouldn’t be searchable and is treated as available to be written over. An expert can find and restore these files to normal. Since files marked with the “?” can be written over and erased, don’t do anything that might write over them.

    • Richard is right. "Deleting" a file is really breaking the link from the file to the directory. Any given file isn't really deleted untit it is overwritten by new data, and as new data is randomly written to files, that could take forever to happen. Which means there's a good chance it hasn't happened yet to anything you think is important and even then, not a whole lot of it.

    • i took the external drive to Best Buy Thursday to restore the data. Still waiting. On pins and needles.

What's ironic is that my desktop PC was clearly in a death spiral, so I had copied all files on my PC hard drive to the external for safekeeping, and deleted them from my PC to coax as much speed out of it as possible while I shopped for a replacement. But the external expired first!

  • Today Tracy and I visited an antique mall we had never gone to before. It is 60K square feet with over 200 dealers. Before we were even halfway through, the power went out and we had to leave. If we don't go back tomorrow, maybe next week.

It's funny, but sometimes you hit a period during which certain items seem to "follow you around" from store-to-store. For a while it had been a 1950s-era ice bucket with penguins on it, but lately we have been followed by cast iron "Rat Fink" statues. The one was saw today was three feet tall.

Here is the penguin ice bucket that is currently haunting me. It was a prop in a play from college that was truly horrible. I hated that stupid bucket. Now I am seeing it everywhere.

    • Yeah. Several years ago, I read a novel titled The Emperor of Ocean Park, a very densely plotted suspense novel about a long-running plot to alter the composition of the U.S. Supreme Court that is uncovered by the son of a federal judge who would have been the second Black conservative on the bench -- except his father was discredited because the plotters didn't want him there.

I read it, I disposed of it ... and I came to regret doing so. Two weeks ago, I came across a copy at a used book store, but didn't buy it. Then the next week, I came across a copy at a thrift store, which I could only interpret as a sign, so I bought it. And then I learned that there's a TV series version on the MGM+ channel!

  • About a week ago I had a dream about this guy and it was driving me nuts because I didn't know who he was or where I knew him from.

Then last night I described him to Tracy and she solved the mystery.
