With Vandal Savage diverting the GCPD's resources to his single-minded war against the Bats and the Bat-Family trying to stop Poison Ivy while evading the GCPD, there's almost no one left to do actual police work! Looks like officers Gordon and Espinoza have their work cut out for them.
I didn't know there were any good cops left in Gotham City! OK, that's mean. You're bound to have a few good apples in any organization, at least until management roots them out. And it's nice to see "Gotham Central" in a logo again.
IIRC, I really liked the premise of Gotham Central more than I liked the execution. I wanted to see workaday cops and how they handled the idea that there was a mysterious freak out there doing their job, and doing it better. What would their response be? Motivation? Apathy? Fear? And I wanted to see conversations in a squad car about The Joker. And to see the corruption in action, learn what factors drive it, and get a handle on how big it really is. And I wanted Batman to not appear, or only obliquely in his urban legend mode, leaving the cops to debate what they'd seen. And I wanted to meet a LOT of cops, which would help populate Gotham beyond its big names, for use in other other Bat-books. But I think what we got was The Crispus, Maggie and Renee Show. (And I was disappointed when they brought in Maggie; for one thing, cops don't "transfer" from one city to another. You have to go through the hiring process, just like any other job. And bringing Maggie to Gotham meant depriving Superman stories of a good, non-powered supporting character.

Another book I want to check out. I get all the superheroes I need from Marvel and DC, so i look to IDW, Image and Dark Horse for dark fantasy, historical fiction, science fictions, neo-noir, crime capers and other genres.

EVENT HORIZON: INFERNO #5: I finally watched the movie. I don't know why I didn't watch it before now, but I guess it just flew under my radar. Anyway, it was OK. Although Sam Neill's role was a big ol' red flag, telegraphing the ending. And the F/X don't really hold up. Still, I can see how the concept would spawn sequels, at least in comics. One of these days, I'll get around to reading this one.

The newest member of Oni's all-star Archie Comics braintrust, Winters is the writer of multiple New York Times bestselling novels, including the acclaimed Last Policeman trilogy (2012-14), Underground Airlines (2016), and Big Time (2024), among many others. In 2019, Winters joined the writing staff of FX's acclaimed Marvel television series Legion and subsequently created and showran CBS' #1 hit television series Tracker. In 2024, Winters made his comic book debut on Oni's revitalized line of EC Comics as a central writer for CRUEL UNIVERSE, which debuted to blockbuster sales and subsequently earned an Eisner Award nomination. No fair! Last week it was listed for Sept. 9, and this week it's listed for Sept. 2 -- and has already come out! Grumble, grumble. Anyway, I picked up a copy at my LCS, and have high hopes. I don't know if there's still a market for teen humor, but I suppose we'll see.

Titan Comics and poncle have today announced that fans will be able to explore the lore behind Vampire Survivors like never before in a brand-new series of comics. With the first issue set to debut in all good comic stores in September 2026, the series will span four issues. There will also be a graphic novel comprising of all four issues, launching in March 2027.
Since its breakout debut in 2021, Vampire Survivors has gone on to become a genre-defining colossal hit, winning both Best Game and Best Game Design at the 2023 BAFTAs, as well as Best Evolving Game in 2025. The game is set in your average Italian countryside, where hordes of monsters have been summoned by the evil and mighty Bisconte Draculó, ravaging the land around them and sending the country into chaos. It is up to the Belpaese family and other heroic survivors to take it upon themselves to defeat Draculó. The player’s aim is to survive as long as possible under the constant attack of terrifying monsters.
In this new story, familiar survivors venture through cursed realms filled with unspeakable creatures, hidden histories and increasingly bizarre mysteries as they begin uncovering secrets that were never meant to be found. As they seek answers and battle monsters in an endless library, a corrupted dairy plant, and even a mad forest, a terrible and shocking truth finally begins to reveal itself.
This adaptation brings on board a stellar creative team, written by David Hazan (co-creator of the hit medieval noir comic series, Nottingham), and illustrated by the wonderfully talented Jimmy Kucaj (known for their work on previous horror comic Dread the Halls).

I am in the process of reading Invincible, the entire series. I will likely have more to say about it when I've finished (currently I'm up to #120), but something happened in #117 that seems apropos here. Mark (Invincible) Grayson has been away from his LCS for months and stops in to clear out his P&H.
MARK: Holy crap, is Science Dog a woman now?
CLERK: Not exactly. Science Dog is still in the book, but now the focus is on his alternate dimension sister. It's a weird choice, but still pretty cool.
MARK: Man, I hate it when a book has been going for over a decade and they start changing things so drastically to keep the story engaging and new. Sure, it has a chance of keeping things interesting... but it's just as likely to alienate the dedicated readers that have supported you all these years.
CLERK: I hear you... I hate change. That's why I mostly read the corporate comics. Good guys always win... same bad guys always come back. It's comforting.
MARK: Are you serious?
CLERK: Hell no! Those comics blow!
MARK: Ha! Okay. You had me worried for a minute there.
Could just as easily be Kirby-esque...
