COLDER: TOSS THE BONES #1 (OF 5)

On sale Sept 30

Writer: PAUL TOBIN

FC, 32 pages, $3.99

Miniseries

Declan has gone from a mere human to a reluctant hero—all while the subject of the horrific machinations of the monstrous creature Nimble Jack. But our hero’s trials have only begun, as Jack flits freely between Boston and a deranged and dark reality known as the Hungry World, uniting agents of madness with only one purpose: to slaughter and consume Declan!

Art by Juan Ferreyra (Constantine: Future’s End, Batman Eternal)!

Looks pretty Joker-ish, doesn't it? I didn't read the first Colder mini, but the look interesting enough that I hope to catch up some day. Anyone have a recommendation?

CONAN THE AVENGER #18

Writer: FRED VAN LENTE

Art: BRIAN CHING

Colors: MICHAEL ATIYEH

Cover: JASON FELIX

On sale Sept 30

FC, 32 pages, $3.50

Ongoing

Janissa the Widowmaker returns!

Janissa the Widowmaker -- one of the deadliest warriors Conan has ever met -- returns and makes Conan fight for his life! Conan is a prisoner of Janissa’s all-female army, but the true threat may not be their leader, but lurking amid their ranks!

“It’s a fun, exciting adventure story starring everyone’s favorite Barbarian ...  Recommended.”-- Fandom Post

I did read this one, and as I've been saying all along, the Van Lente/Ching collaboration is a pretty good one. This is much better work than, say, the last few years Marvel's Conan. A quantum leap above, really.

$16.99

In these tales from BATMAN #0, 18-20, 28 and 34, plus BATMAN ANNUAL #2, look back to the early days of the Dark Knight, then see the impact of the death of his son, Damian! Plus, has Batman's worst foe become ... Bruce Wayne? This title also includes three pivotal chapters from the epic ZERO YEAR storyline, and a chapter that ties into BATMAN ETERNAL!

Is this an homage to a scene or poster from the 1989 Batman movie series? It looks familiar (aside from it being sort of generic).

The final issue of the Eisner Award-nominated series is a sweep of science fictional beauty and madness. Featuring cameos by some of Morpheus’s favorite siblings, the grand finale of OVERTURE dovetails into the start of The Sandman’s first journey, providing new insight into THE SANDMAN VOL. 1: PRELUDES AND NOCTURNES.

This issue is also offered as a combo pack edition with a redemption code for a digital download of this issue.

This has been delayed so long I'm going to have to re-read the first five issues to remember what's going on. Terrible, I know, but I'll force myself somehow.

Art: JEAN FROES, FABIANO NEVES

Cover: BILLY KING

TPB • FC • $17.99 • 144 pages

Hawke, Santini and the coolest attack chopper ever made are back in this epic reimagining of the hit TV classic! Airwolf, the nuclear-powered helicopter, is featured in this blistering anthology of stand-alone thrillers that redefines the classic for a new generation!

Top comics creators bring their personal stamp to Airwolf's first comics adventure!

I was actually sent a physical copy of this for review, which is really rare these days. I can't say I got much out of it, though. It's sorta generic, tough-guy military/rescue/humanitarian adventures. (The Airwolf guys seem to be military, anyway, although I'd be hard-pressed to say what branch or level.) At least it's not cynical; the Airwolf guys are the good guys, doing good-guy things. I'm not sure I could take any more of the ambiguous realpolitik like what we do in the Middle East. I'm a genuine patriot, in that I really want us to be the good guys and get angry when we're not.

KING OF THE COMICS: ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF KING FEATURES SYNDICATE

Writer/Art/Cover: Various

HC • FC • $49.99 • 288 pages • 9.25” x 12”

Krazy Kat! Popeye! Flash Gordon! Beetle Bailey! Blondie! Prince Valiant! Hagar the Horrible! Barney Google and Snuffy Smith! Baby Blues! Mutt & Jeff! Zits! Juliet Jones! Buz Sawyer! Steve Canyon! Bizarro! Hi & Lois! Maggie & Jiggs! Johnny Hazard!

There are simply too many to list because King Features has had a more illustrious and long-lasting history than any newspaper syndicate, even as it continues to lead the way into the digital age and beyond.

A centennial birthday bash hosted by Dean Mullaney, Bruce Canwell, and Brian Walker, with contributions by Brendan Burford, Lucy Shelton Caswell, Jared Gardner, Ron Goulart, Jeffrey Lindenblatt, Carl Linich, Paul Tumey, and Germund von Wowern,  More than just comics, it’s a celebration of the profound impact that King Features has had on popular culture, and if you only buy one book this year, this is it!

As an amateur comics historian, this stuff looks delicious!

UNCLE SCROOGE #6

Writers: GIORGIO PEZZIN, THAD KOMOROWSKI

Art: MARCO ROTA

Cover: JONATHAN GRAY

Subscription Variant: AMY MEBBERSON

FC • 40 pages • $3.99

“The Bigger Operator”: Arch-criminal architect Antoine Mountebank can spot the weaknesses in any building -- and he’s raiding Scrooge’s properties one by one!

• Fan favorite artist Marco Rota returns with an amazing tale of McDuck versus madman!

• Continues this popular series’ legacy numbering at #411!

• 40 action-packed pages for only $3.99!

• “Disney Legacy” Frontierland cover by Derek Charm!

Here's a story where, instead of the Beagle Boys, a genuinely smart crook tries to steal Scrooge's money bin. And, frankly, it's a lot more entertaining than when those idiot dogs are the villains, because Scrooge has a real challenge on his hands. He really has to be smarter than the smarties!

SELF-OBSESSED (TPB)

Writer/Art/Cover: SINA GRACE

SEPTEMBER 30 / 160 PAGES / BW / M / $9.99

Comes with FREE AUDIOBOOK download!

Sina Grace is returning to his slice-of-life roots in SELF-OBSESSED, a new graphic novel memoir from Image Comics. Spawned from the one-shot of the same name, SELF-OBSESSED debuts over 80 pages of new material, providing readers an intimate peek into the brain of an artist asking himself what depths he’ll need to plumb to be anybody’s somebody.

After a critically successful run on two BURN THE ORPHANAGE miniseries, a return to the cult favorite LI’L DEPRESSED BOY and the launch of the all-ages series PENNY DORA & THE WISHING BOX, Grace thought 2014 was his year to shine. Unfortunately, a number of personal tribulations -- including a death in the family and the end of a longterm relationship-- derailed all momentum and sent him spiraling into a depression. After leaving his hometown of Los Angeles and traveling across the American Southwest, Grace found his passion project for 2015: himself.

“It felt like the world took away every incentive to live, love and make stories,” Grace said. “After a lot of grieving and introspection, I decided that all I wanted to do was tell stories that were 100% the realest me I could give the reader. #YOLO.”

Influenced by nights spent poring over Joan Didion, Arthur Rimbaud and Anders Nilsen, the scope of stories in SELF-OBSESSED reflect the ups-and-downs of breaking into comics, reconciling relationships past, and discovering what true selfhood looks like. Mixed with long-forgotten strips unearthed from the creator’s messy archives, conversations with contemporaries Ryan O’Connell and Colleen Green, as well as essays exploring gender, identity, and pursuing one’s dreams, Grace brings a whole new spin to memoir for the Twitter age.

Aren't all writers and artists self-obsessed to some degree? Anyway, I honestly don't care about their interior lives or personal experiences -- as I often say, I find my own life far more interesting, and I've never written a graphic novel about it. Besides, I just want to read me some funnybooks, not watch an artist take his ego out for a walk. I don't care if that makes me equally shallow. But shallow it is, and I'm not interested.

SOUTHERN BASTARDS BOOK ONE (PREMIERE HC)

Writer: JASON AARON

Art/Cover: JASON LATOUR

SEPTEMBER 30 / 256 PAGES / FC / M / $29.99

Welcome to Craw County, Alabama, home of Boss BBQ, the state champion Runnin' Rebs football team and more bastards than you've ever seen.

SOUTHERN BASTARDSby JASON AARON (Scalped, Star Wars) and JASON LATOUR (Spider-Gwen, Loose Ends) gets a premiere hardcover, collecting the first eight issues of the Eisner Award-nominated (2015: Best Continuing Series) southern-fried crime series.

Collects SOUTHERN BASTARDS #1-8.

I haven't cracked the cover of an issue of Southern Bastards, because as a son of the South I am genuinely afraid of what I'll find. If it's too accurate, I'll be depressed. If it's some Yankee's perception of us, I'll be angry.

I've got to do it, though. Maybe here's my opportunity.

STRANGE GIRL OMNIBUS

Writer: RICK REMENDER

Art: ERIC NGUYEN, JEREOME OPENA, & PETER BERGTING

SEPTEMBER 30 / 456 PAGES / FC / M / $25.99

The entire STRANGE GIRL saga back in print!

A friend of mine once joked as a bunch of us walked into a bar, "If there's a crazy girl in the room, she'll zero in on Andrew in five minutes or less." Two minutes later, a clearly insane woman was dragging me out to the dance floor as my friends laughed their butts off.

I don't know anything about Strange Girl Omnibus, but the title reminded me of that anecdote. Just thought I'd share.

Hey, Sina Grace, got anything like that in your navel-gazing exercise?

This is the format in which I read Walking Dead, so this is like a heads up to myself. Don't worry, though, I won't write a graphic novel about it.

Cover by JULIAN TOTINO TEDESCO

32 PGS / Rated T+ / $3.99

Howard the Duck side by side with SHIELD! Why a duck? Because Coulson knows a secret about Howard that could save the multiverse!

S.H.I.E.L.D. BY LEE & KIRBY: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION (TPB)

Written by STAN LEE with JACK KIRBY & DENNIS O’NEIL

Penciled by JACK KIRBY with JOHN SEVERIN, DON HECK, JOE SINNOTT, JOHN BUSCEMA, HOWARD PURCELL & OGDEN WHITNEY

Cover by JACK KIRBY

256 PGS / All Ages / $24.99

Celebrating S.H.I.E.L.D.’s 50th anniversary, Marvel proudly presents the very first S.H.I.E.L.D. adventures! In 1965, having revolutionized everything from super heroes to war and Westerns, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby set their sights on the spy game. Cold War covert ops had been dominating headlines, so they created an international organization to protect the Marvel Universe. Headed by Nick Fury, and featuring Tony Stark and the Howling Commandos, S.H.I.E.L.D. boasted amazing gadgets, world-dominating villains and the debut of the awesome Helicarrier! These inaugural adventures include the first appearances of Hydra and A.I.M.; a team-up with Captain America; and countless threats to every man, woman and child on planet Earth. Get ready to dive into the world of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! Collecting FANTASTIC FOUR (1961) #21, and material from STRANGE TALES (1951) #135-150 and TALES OF SUSPENSE (1959) #78.

These stories were written and drawn at a time when, believe it or not, it was plausible for Nick Fury, Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, et al, to be World War II veterans and still be active heroes. Strange how it doesn't seem that long ago to me, but it's been 50 years since I first read these stories. I still have a great fondness for them.

They may have been Forbidden to some -- particularly when the Wertham Seduction of the Innocent book hit the newsstands -- but to kids the length and breadth of the United States (and a select few in the UK), Richard Hughes and his tremblin’ team of terrific tormenters were where it was at. Big time. And now, a half-century since the first issue appeared, ACG’s wonderful Forbidden Worlds are accessible once more ... and this time in state-of-the-art hardcover volumes containing five to seven issues apiece. This is going to be one hell of a journey: come make it with us as we travel together through some of the most memorable comicbooks of all time.

BOOKSHOP EDITION: 1,700 unsigned bookshop copies available, £36.99/$59.99

Due to be published August 2015 this second volume of eerie tales of suspense stories includes issues 1-7 from August 1952 to February 1955 from issues 8/9/18/19 of the Farrel Publication Strange Fantasy. Also features bonus stories “Out Of This World" (1950), “An Earthman on Venus" (1951) and “Flying Saucers" (1952). This second volume has been meticulously compiled from the original source material and painstakingly digitally restored.

More whacked-out weirdness from the days when comicbooks still had an edge and featuring (in issue #3) an appearance from everyone’s favourite jungle princess, Rulah (albeit masquerading under the nom du loincloth, Pulah). The line-up includes writer Bruce Hamilton and penciller, inker Steve Ditko. Strange Fantasy was formerly Rocketman (with one issue) and picked up where Rocketman ceased publication. Strange Fantasy is then numbered 2-14 rather than 1-13. The title left newsstands in 1954, the victim of the hearings in the Senate.

Just a heads up for those, like me, who are buying these.

A showdown. An apocalypse. An ending.

Many years from today, Peter Stanchek, the Renegades, the Harbinger Foundation, the Bleeding Monk, and Toyo Harada’s Imperium all reach their terminus, as the entire planet becomes the battlefield for the most devastating psionic combat humanity has ever seen. The Great Destroyer, long prophesied and foreseen, comes to Earth at last. Who will survive…and what will be left of them?

New York Times best-selling writer Joshua Dysart (IMPERIUM, HARBINGER) and blockbuster artist Kano (THE DELINQUENTS) journey to the far end of the Geomancer’s BOOK OF DEATH to reveal the final, unavoidable end for two of the Valiant Universe’s most powerful foes.

I just read last week's Book of Death entries, so I'm a little behind. (They really do need to invent an eighth day.) It's been a very good ride so far, so I think I can recommend this sight unseen.

CARTOONS FOR VICTORY (HC)

Publisher: FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS

$34.99

Cartoons for Victory showcases the wartime work by cartoonists including Milton Caniff, Chester Gould, Al Capp, Harold Gray, Charles Addams, Herblock, Peter Arno, Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, Hank Ketcham, and many others. Gathered from private collections and obscure public sources, most of the cartoons and comics in this book have not been seen since their first publication. This is the most comprehensive collection ever assembled of World War II-era cartoons, reflecting the indefatigable spirit of the time.

I've never been a big fan of comic strips, especially one-panel strips, which seems like a lot of effort -- artist, syndicate, newspaper, all working together -- to get a single, usually forgettable thought across to readers, who may or many not even stop scanning the page long enough to read it. Now, there are exceptions, like Charles Addams, who were far better than the format normally allows. He's in this book, along with some others I admire, so I might actually enjoy the thing. But even if the whole book was filled with the moral equivalent of Family Circus and Ziggy I'd probably still get it, just for the historical insight.

Cover: NATHAN GOODEN

120 PGS / FC / TPB

This 120-page, full-color softcover is an action-filled crime thriller that follows three women into a world of corruption and intrigue veiled in kudzu and Chantilly lace.

Darcy, Kat and Alley room together in New York City, where they have just finished their undergraduate degrees. To celebrate graduation, and get in one last jaunt before life takes them separate directions, they go on a long road-trip Southbound through Darcy’s and Kat’s stomping grounds. When they survive a bad accident, they find themselves stuck in the middle of nowhere at witching hour. Searching for help, the girls stumble across a KKK rally. But their trouble doesn’t end there. Corruption runs a nearby town, making its way up to big corporations all through the South. Rather than hightail it home, these girls use everything in their repertoire to put out the fire smoldering in Dixie.

“This story is nothing like our first book The Gifted and that’s a good thing,” explained CME President, Damian Wassel Sr. “Our books take people somewhere else completely and this time it's to the American deep south. Anyone who has lived beneath the Mason-Dixon will tell you everything changes for better and worse, once you cross into Dixie. We invite you to explore that world with us!”

You can find CME products in traditional book stores as well as comic book shops. CME will be exhibiting at WonderCon, San Diego Comic Con and Baltimore Comic Con.

Writer: NICK ABADZIS

Art: ELEONORA CARLINI

Cover: ALEX RONALD

32 page / FC / $3.99

Coming September 2015, following this summer’s epic Doctor Who comic crossover event, the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor’s begin their second year.

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor: Year Two sees alternating art team Elena Casagrande (Angel, Suicide Risk) and Eleonora Carlini continue their stratospheric rise, while writer Nick Abadzis (LAIKA) plots an epic arc for the ages.

The Tenth Doctor: Year Two picks up from Year One and the 2015 Event with 'THE SINGER NOT THE SONG', Part 1!

Fresh from the Event, the Tenth Doctor and Gabriella Gonzalez are plunged into a harmonious alien world of musical life-forms. ... But the Doctor and Gabby are walking straight into a war!

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor: Year Two #1 comes with five covers to collect: an art cover by Alex Ronald; a photo cover; a Rachel Smith variant; a Jake variant; and a blank sketch variant.

I enjoyed the "Four Doctors" mini, but it didn't inspire me to jump whole-hog into reading all Doctor Who comics. Just a Philistine, I guess.

INVISIBLE INK: MY MOTHERS LOVE AFFAIR WITH CARTOONIST (HC)

Publisher: FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS

Writer/Art/Cover: BILL GRIFFITH

$29.99

Renowned underground cartoonist Bill Griffith has created his first long-form graphic story - a memoir that recounts his mother's secret life in the 1950s and '60s. Invisible Ink unfolds like a detective story, alternating between past and present, as Griffith recreates suburban Levittown and Manhattan in the 1950s and '60s. Griffith finally discovers his mother's amorous past in her diary and puts the pieces together to reveal a mother he never knew.

I didn't much care for Griffith's work when I was buying underground comics in the long-before time, but this seems like a really interesting story!

JIM BUTCHER'S THE DRESDEN FILES: DOWN TOWN (HC)

Publisher: DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

Cover: STJEPAN SEJIC

Writer: JIM BUTCHER, MARK POWERS

Art: CARLOS GOMEZ

$24.99 / Teen + / 144 pages / Signed $3.99

Dynamite Entertainment is pleased to announce the release of Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files: Down Town hardcover graphic novel, collecting the all-original Dresden Files storyline only ever previously released in a six-issue comic book format. Conceived of by Jim Butcher, co-written by Butcher and Mark Powers (G.I. Joe, Drafted), and illustrated by Carlos Gomez (Deadpool, Pathfinder), the new volume follows upon the success of New York Times bestselling graphic novels The Dresden Files: Ghoul Goblin and The Dresden Files: War Cry. The upcoming release in the official, in-continuity Dresden Files graphic novel series tells the story of titular wizard Harry Dresden's mystical confrontation with Chicago mobsters.

"This was a fun project, because we got to play with a Dresden that was much closer to the character as he exists in the most recent books," says Jim Butcher, acclaimed creator of the Dresden Files series and plotter for the Down Town storyline. "We got to see both Mouse and Molly in action, to show Marcone demonstrating why he's the Baron of Chicago, and to pit Dresden against an archetypical foe of the Wardens of the White Council, a power-maddened warlock. We get to go on an adventure in Undertown, the Stygian labyrinth beneath Chicago, and in general have all the monsters, adventure, and uneasy alliances that are what the readers of The Dresden Files have come to expect from the stories."

Mark Powers, who worked with Butcher's original script to tailor it for the comic book medium, says, "Working with Jim, Carlos, Nick and the entire Dynamite crew on Down Town was an absolute blast. When I found out Carlos would be back, after the stellar job he did illustrating War Cry, I could not have been more excited - and if anything, he upped his game for Down Town. It's an honor and privilege to be associated with Jim and the world he's created, which is so rich with interesting characters and locales that we could probably do a hundred series without exhausting all the possibilities."

In Down Town, Chicago wizard-for-hire Harry Dresden and his new apprentice, Molly Carpenter, intend to end the havoc caused by a mad sorcerer - one whose ambitions would have the Windy City streets carved out as his own private kingdom. But when the magical upstart enters into an alliance with the notorious mob boss "Gentleman Johnnie" Marcone, the fast-and-loose Dresden and his young charge must do everything in their power to survive unscathed. With bonus features including Jim Butcher's original story outline, sketchbook artwork from Carlos Gomez, and a cover gallery with roughs from Stjepan Sejic,  Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files: Down Town hardcover graphic novel will be available in a Regular Edition and a special Signed Limited Edition.

"I loved the way the story came out, and I look forward to creating more graphic novels with Dynamite!" says Butcher.

Jim Butcher is a New York Times bestselling author, whose Dresden Files novel series has sold millions of copies and produced related graphic novels, roleplaying games, and a 2007 Sci-Fi Channel television series. In addition to his Dresden Files series, Butcher has authored the traditional fantasy Codex Alera and steampunk Cinder Spires series.

"The perfect mix of mystery, thrills, humor, and magic. Highest possible recommendation." - SciFiPulse

"If you have been away from the Dresden Files for a while, or simply looking for your next magic mystery fix, The Dresden Files: Down Town has what you want." -- Major Spoilers

I haven't read any of this series, nor do I intend to. But Dynamite sent multiple press releases and a preview, so I feel honor-bound to let you sample it for yourself.

MUTAFUKAZ (HC)

Publisher: TITAN COMICS

 Writer/Art: RUN

120 pages / HC / FC / $19.99

The end of September brings you the quirky dystopian sci-fI- comedy, MUTAFUKAZ by RUN.

What would you do if you were the only person on Earth who could recognise creatures that were taking over the planet?

MUTAFUKAZ is one of the most famous comics in France. It is the story of Angelino, one of the thousand deadbeats living in Dark Meat City. However, after an unremarkable scooter accident, caused by a beautiful, mysterious stranger, Angelino’s life is about to be transformed … into a walking nightmare! He starts witnessing monstrous entities prowling all over the city ... Is Angelino losing his mind, or is this the work of an otherworldly invasion from … the stars?

“Titan are extremely excited and delighted to be releasing this unique piece of work into the English speaking market”, said Chris Teather, Publishing Director, Titan Comics.

The critically-acclaimed series has received several awards: “Postmodernist Virtuoso, Run is a bit like the Tarantino of comics, and MUTAFUKAZ is his Kill Bill” says Les Inrocks, “It’s a groundbreaking graphic quest” for L’optimum and “a graphic novel whose story and graphics are totally fresh! Run has got modern comics down to a fine art” from trendsetting magazine Technik’art.

MUTAFUKAZ came out of the mind of Run, a graphic artist and illustrator who first worked as creative director in several advertising agencies. For his own work and universe, he pulls inspiration from the golden age of Sci-Fi, pulp movies and the popular Latino culture.

After 4 volumes, the series has already sold over 100,000 copies in France. The final issue is scheduled to be released this Fall. A short movie inspired from the brand has been nominated at the Sundance festival in 2003 and a full length movie, produced by Ankama and Japanese legendary animation studio Studio 4C, is currently in production.

"You need to make sure that MUTAFUKAZ is on your “Must buy!” list today." -- Flickering Myth

"Feast your eyes on the glorious vision of one absolutely twisted creative genius." -- Big Comic Page

"An insane treat from beginning to end" -- Bleeding Cool

I don't know any more about this than the press release and short preview below tell us, but Titan seems pretty excited about it.

THE SECOND VOLUME IN THE NEW CULT SERIES FEATURING EVERYONE’S FAVOURITE 8-YEAR-OLD PSYCHOPATH!

If you go down to the woods today … you’ll see a field trip that’s gone very, very wrong. If you put a bunch of kids in the back of a van and drag them along on a weekend of drunken debauchery, that tends to happen. What doesn’t tend to happen is multiple murders and a disembowelment. Unless, of course, Norman is around.

This September sees the release of Norman Vol. 2, the second bloodstained volume of the hit horror comedy written and illustrated by  Stan Silas.

In this second hilarious volume, Norman swaps the playground for the campsite, as he journeys into the woods to toast marshmallows -- and his classmates!

Screaming in the woods! Multiple murders! Disembowelment! Norman is going on a field trip!

I read some of this last night, and didn't much enjoy it. Killing kids for black humor better be REALLY funny, and this wasn't. But I was tired and probably cranky, so your mileage may vary.

PUSSYCATS VOL 1(TPB)

Publisher: E-COMIX

Writer:  VINCE BRUSIO

Art/Cover: MATS ENGESTEN

Mature/$17.99

Up is down and black is white when six fearsome femme fatales shoot it up in this dark action thriller featuring adult film stars fighting for freedom. Pussycats mixes Sons of Anarchy with Charlie's Angels to produce ass-kickin' girls going against gangsters and world governments. When Cold War espionage going public in an election year threatens the careers of powerful people, underground operative Mother Superior sets in motion a disinformation campaign to protect her friends from political fallout and kill a bunch of people who want to exploit her past for profit! Collects issues #0-4.

I'm guessing the plot, characterization and pacing of this book are somewhat secondary considerations to another element that shall go unmentioned. Call it a hunch.

Weirdly, I seem to recognize the girl's face on that cover. I suppose the artist used photo reference of some actress or model I've seen somewhere.

RICK AND MORTY #6

Publisher: ONI PRESS INC.

Writer:  ZAC GORMAN

Art/Cover: CJ CANNON

Variant: ANDREW MACLEAN

$3.99

Oni Press, Portland’s premier independent comic book publisher, announced today the sixth issue of its Rick and Morty comic, which is based on the hit Adult Swim animated series from creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, will be a special issue featuring guest artists Andrew MacLean (Head Lopper) and Nick Filardi (Powers) and starring fan-favorite action team, The Ball Fondlers.

The Ball Fondlers are an unlikely team of action-star heroes appearing as an in-universe television show within the Rick and Morty television series from Harmon and Roiland. On this special comic adventure our heroes embark on an explosive, high stakes mission that takes them deep into the jungles of Central America. There they will attempt to save a United States Senator from a hostile rebel army, in the greatest sendup of 80s action films you’ve ever seen.

Andrew MacLean, of hot new comic series Head Lopper, joins as guest artist for this explosive issue, as well as contributing a Ball Fondlers alternate cover. Joining him will be guest colorist Nick Filardi (Brides of Helheim, Powers) with comic series writer Zac Gorman writing this special adventure.

Demand for Oni Press’ Rick and Morty comic series has been overwhelming, with the first two issues going back to press for multiple print runs. Meanwhile the show has become a cultural icon in the year since its debut on Adult Swim and its legion of fans, awaiting the release of the second season which will premiere Sunday, July 26 at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT on Adult Swim, are now heading to comic shops.

The Ball Fondlers issue (Diamond Code: JUL151483, MacLean cover: JUL151484) of the Rick and Morty comic series is available for preorder now and is scheduled to arrive in stores on 9/30.

This really isn't my cup of hemlock, but Oni was proud enough to send both a variant cover and a press release. So here you go, Rick and Morty fans!

SCHMUCK (GN)

Cover: JOSEPH REMNANT

Mature/$19.99

Adam Kessler is a pop-culture-obsessed New York photographer torn between pleasing his Mom by finding a "nice Jewish girl," and figuring out what he really wants. This awkward coming-of-age-story is illustrated by 22 artists, whose individual short stories together tell a complete narrative.

Sometimes I read some of the odder manga descriptions aloud to my wife, because we find it so amazing and amusing that such books not only exist, but sell well enough for a publisher to make money off them. Somewhere in Japan there is a guy reading the above description to his wife and joking about those craaaaaaazy Americans!

SHOWA 1953-1989: A HISTORY OF JAPAN (TPB)

Writer/Art/Cover: SHIGERU MIZUKI

Paperback • 560 pages • 6.45" x 8.75" • B+W • $24.95

The final volume of the Eisner-nominated history of Japan

Showa 1953-1989: A History of Japan concludes Shigeru Mizuki’s dazzling autobiographical and historical account of Showa period Japan, a portrait both intimate and ranging of a defining epoch. The final volume picks up in the wake of Japan’s utter defeat in World War Two, as a country reduced to rubble struggles to rise again. A former enemy becomes their greatest ally as the USA funnels money, jobs, and opportunity into Japan, hoping to establish the country as a bulwark against Soviet communist expansion.

Japan reinvents itself, emerging as an economic powerhouse. Events like the Tokyo Olympiad and the World’s Fair introduce a new, friendly Japan to the world, but this period of peace and plenty conceals a populace still struggling to come to terms with the devastation of WWII. The original Japanese edition won the prestigious Kodansha Manga Award; the English translation has been nominated for an Eisner Award.

Hot dog, the final volume at last! I've been holding off on buying these to see if there's any chance of a boxed set or hardback collection. I'll give it a couple of months, and if such doesn't appear, I'll buy all four of these and immerse myself in them. I can't wait!

SWORDS OF SORROW: RED SONJA / JUNGLE GIRL #3 (OF 3)

Publisher: DYNAMITE ENTERTAIMENT

Writer: MARGUERITE BENNETT

Art: MIRKA ANDOLFO

Cover: JAY ANACLETO

$3.99 / Teen+ / 32 pages

As the ice storm howls and unleashes a crescendo of destruction, Sonja and Jana howl right back. They have better lung stamina. Just you watch. Mistress Hel plays her final endgame, unleashing powers beyond all control for the fate of the island and all its people! Sonja and Jana aren't going to take that lying down, are they?

I understand what Bennett was doing with her characterization here, playing off Sonja's worldiness against Jana's innocence. But innocence doesn't equal stupid, and that was the vibe I kept getting. I like Jana, and didn't care to see her in that light, so I wasn't thrilled with this mini. Nice art, though.

UNIVERSAL WAR ONE!

But if they think military warfare it tough, wait until they battle with time and space!

2058. Humanity has colonized our entire solar system. The black wall absorbs all light and matter, and it's up to a band of disgraced soldiers to investigate the phenomenon.

“Bajram is a wonderful artist ... the book looks fabulous!" -- Comic Book Resources

Word of caution: I found this hard to read on an iPad. It works much better as a physical book.

As to content, I haven't finished it yet, but my wife wants to read it, too, and she doesn't often notice specific books.

VAMPIRELLA 2015 ANNUAL

Writer: NANCY A. COLLINS

Art: ANEKE

Cover: JAY ANACLETO

$5.99 / Teen + / 48 pages

ON SALE DATE: September 30

No longer the Queen of the Nosferatu, Vampirella is free to begin a new chapter in her life -- as a field agent for The Kabal, a covert supernatural organization comprised of monsters that polices their own kind in order to maintain balance between humanity and the world of the occult. Her first mission is to rescue a fellow Kabal agent kidnapped by a group of mad scientists calling themselves the Prometheus Society, who demand the release of their fellow member, Dr. Faustus. But first she must coerce a former field agent, Lazarus the Walking Dead Man, into returning to the Kabal before going toe-to-toe with the likes of Dr. Moreau, Dr. Caligari, Dr. John Dee, and a certain Dr. Frankenstein. Let the Monster Rally begin!

I've been enjoying today's Vampi much more than the stories I'm reading in Dynamite's reprints of Vampirella magazine (which is up to the early 1980s now). At least in these stories, things happen. In the old Warren stories, the status quo was never violated, so they tended to be repetitious.

    1. I think I'm about done with the new Archie.  It was interesting to see what the new approach was going to be like, but I don't feel a need to go on reading it.
    2. I'm enjoying the Twelfth Doctor book, but I feel no need to read the books featuring previous Doctors.
    3. Cartoons for Victory  looks interesting, but maybe not 35 bucks worth of interesting.
    4. I've really been enjoying Showa. Can't wait for the conclusion.
    5. Manga about Vikings shouldn't be too astounding. The Japanese do comics on just about every conceivable subject.
  • I've been reading the Waid Agents of SHIELD series, and even though the likenesses are hit-or-miss, the stories (done-in-ones with a thin connecting thread, similar to how he treated Brave & Bold) are a lot of fun. Particularly good are issue 2, which guest-starred Ms. Marvel, and issue 4, with the Invisible Woman. It's a stealth teamup book, and I'll be sorry to see it go.

As for Archie, I'm still on board, and probably will be for as long as Waid is.

  • According to my records, that Pogo book was solicited for May 20 release. For a Hermes press book, September 30 is actually early!
