Don Markstein, the creator of the Toonopedia website, died earlier this year. There are a number of obituaries online, including this one from the Comics Reporter, this one from Cartoon Brew, and this one at an SF fandom blog. His website covered newspaper strips, cartoon characters and comics heroes, and the obscure as well as the well-known. I learned a lot from it. May he rest in peace.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I liked his site; I liked Comics Revue when I read it, too. Rest in peace, Don.
Sad news, and he was only 64 years old. Rest in peace.

My condolences to Markstein's family and friends, but is there any word on who will be maintaining, let alone possibly carrying the site forward?
Toonopedia is too good a resource to lose!
The site has a new front page promising a new version of the site. The articles are not currently accessible from there, although some of them can still be found through Google. The new front page is copyrighted and trademarked to Don Markstein so it may be a family member intends to keep the site going.
...What Lee said . Thank you , Luke .
I hadn't gone there that much recently , and I think it had been - Presumably reflecting his ailment ? - rather little- - um , less- , anyway - updated recently .
One mild fault about the site's fact-keeping-up ( An awkward phrase but I'm in a hurry now and...) was that he sometimes did not note more recent years' appearances of characters he listed , for instance , this might have involved me sending in a friendly correction that may or may not have been reflected in the site's entry , that one point the Felix the Cat entry did not note that Felix comic books were being published , as occasional B&W one-shots with new material , well into this century .
