  • I've seen through episode 1020 now. Barnabas is acting out, going after Maggie and nearly biting her before Hoffman showed up in her room. Most recently, he's bitten Buffy, the waitress at the Eagle, and Cyrus has just burst into her apartment, with Barnabas standing over her body! Cyrus, by the way, is very tempted to become John Yaeger again.

Will, on the other hand, would really like to get out from under Barnabas's thumb, but has no real way of making that happen.

Plus, Angelique is trying to make Quentin drive Maggie out of the house, but all her plans for doing so haven't worked out.

    • The writers of Dark Shadows are not nearly as accomplished writing "science fiction" as they are "gothic." They do do "time travel," however, and consequently refer to this alternate dimension we've been in for the past several weeks as "parallel time." Lately, the voiceover actors have begin referring to it as "parallel concurrent time," which I prefer.

  • I've seen up through episode 1022 now, and we're in some very disturbing material. In these latest episodes, Cyrus has taken an interest in Maggie, and has turned into Yeager...who, at the end of 1022, is attempting to rape her in a Collinsport alley. Horrible stuff... but again, Yeager really cements himself as a despicable villain, in a disgustingly human way. I hope he gets what's coming to him soon.

And Katherine Lee Scott -- she's at top form in these episodes. When she has the dream about Quentin killing Angelique, and wakes up screaming, "She's your wife, Quentin! Your WIFE!" I was floored. Some of the most heartfelt dread I've ever seen on this show.

    • Now that the shooting of the movie is over and Dan Curtis is back, things are turning around: Barnabas Collins now lusts for Maggie, and Cyrus/Yeager tries to rape her. Over on the "Dark Shadows Every Day" blog, Danny Horn speculates that Curtis might be trying to spotlight the protagonist of his upcoming theatrical film.

  • I've just watched episode 1023. Buffie interrupts Yeager's attempted rape of Maggie. Afterward, Yeager runs back to Cyrus's lab, and becomes Cyrus again...only to see Maggie outside, confiding in him (in oblque terms) what just happened. Cyrus is wracked with guilt, and destroys his lab, vowing to never become John Yeager again. (We'll see if he ever has to explain this to Sabrina.)

When Maggie gets home to Collinwood, she gets a frosty reception from Roger, and a sweeter (but nastier) one from Angelique. All the while, Maggie's processing her trauma, which niether of the two of them know about. Roger taunts her that it's Quentin's anniversary to Angelique tonight, and he's unlikely to be coming home. Angelique directs her in dreams to a drawer in her bedroom, where she finds letters, presumably doctored ones from Angelique to Alexis, telling her how wonderful her marriage to Quentin is, to further drive her mad with uncertainty and jealousy.

Strangely enough, the end credits aren't the usual ones -- they're just "A Dan Curtis Production" over the sparkly dreamscape.

I'm hoping to get through the end of Parallel Time (ep 1060, from what I understand) by the end of the year. Then, if all goes well (and I push my pace a little) I'll wrap the series up by the end of 2025!

    • ...and at this point I'm just hoping to catch up to you by 1060!

  • I've also just watched episode 1024, in which Maggie wears the wrong dress to a costume ball, seemingly cementing the fact that her marriage to Quentin has fallen apart. (All part of Angelique's nefarious plotting!) There's some great, tense drama between Quentin and Maggie, as Barnabas becomes curious about Alexis/Angelique.

My favorite moment, hoever, comes from Liz. She's having some difficulty with some of the invitations for the ball. "Alexis, can you help me with these?" she asks, and suddenly I've forgotten what century they're in.

    • David Selby plays six different characters in Dark Shadows, all of them named "Quentin Collins," but none of them is as collossal a jerk as PT Quentin.

Also, I have no idea what board game Angelique and Barnabas are playing, but it is definitely not chess.

  • I've seen up through episode 1029 now. Barnabas and Angelique are directly confronting each other, albeit in secret. Barnabas has warned Maggie that "Alexis" means to do her harm, though she doesn't believe it. It hardly matters at the moment; she's been kidnapped by the clothing-sniffing John Yeager, who has her locked up in a basement he rented, and then killed his landlord. (He intends for Maggie to fall in love with him there; fat chance. Nonetheless, this falls into Angelique's plans, too -- she worked up an alliance with Yeager when she saw him skuling in the house.) Sabrina has seen Cyrus change into Yeager, and after reacting in horror, she still is willing to do his bidding. Meanwhile, Quentin knows Maggie has gone, but won't even search for her, figuring she's left in a fit of pique and needs to come back on her own.

Funniest scene (albeit horrible): Yeager is lurking in Maggie's bedroom, an active threat at the end of an episode. Then, a phone rings, Yeager scampers behind a curtain, and Maggie talks (with Quentin, I believe). Then she hangs up the phone, and Yeager's about to get back to lurking (or worse), when Daniel comes into the room. Eventually, he leaves, and Yeager settles for stealing a hairbrush and slipping away.
