I saw Night of Dark Shadows this weekend, which (aside from audio versions) I guess is my last visit witht he original cast. It's not a great movie, but it has a couple really nice scenes in it. And it's a genuine pleasure to see the cast in a modern context again, and photographed competently and in sharper images that what we have of the original TV show.
I really like the scene where Quentin was up in the turret, and the camera panned around and you could see the past in the mirror. That was really well done.
And the scene where he tried to drown Tracy was great. Him lurching toward her, seeing Laura instead of her, and then throwing her in the pool and holding her under the water. Really well handled, I thought.
There's one shot that gave me an unintentional laugh, though.
When we flash back to Angelique being hanged from a high branch on a tree, there are two men on the platform with her that push her off. She drops, and we cut to a reaction shot. And then we cut to a long shot, once the deed is done. We see the scene in silhouette, from the ground: the two men on the platform high above the ground, and the dark shape of Angelique...somehow hanging above them rather than below.
It was probably shot that way because it made for a clearer silhouette, unobstructed by the scoffolding or the branches. But still... you don't drop UP. Was she bungee hanged?
I've got a preview of this movie in an issue of Famous Monsters of Filmland that I bought a couple years ago. I'll have to find that issue and reread the article.

Thanks! I remembered that, but had skipped them, and I hadn't yet dug around for those entries yet.

Those interior shots are much more impressive than the former ABC studios in midtown Manhattan.
Oh, man... imagine if the show had been able to shoot there! That place has got such PRESENCE!
As Dan Curtis himself once admitted, "Our 'grand staircase' was hardly grand."
The entire studio would probably fit inside the actual great hall of Seaview Terrace.
Yeah, Dan. Your grand staircase wobbled and the walls shook when the door was closed too hard.

Do you have any idea how disconcerting it is to have the character being terrorized share your name? *shiver*
Yikes! I imagine it's the inverse of what I feel whenever I watch The Dick Van Dyke Show.
