From DC Entertainment

Feb. 21, 2013

This afternoon, DC Comics announced the launch of an all-new ongoing series that will be hitting stands this June: BATMAN/SUPERMAN. Written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Jae Lee, this exciting and bold new title will kick off this spring and tell the definitive story of how Batman and Superman met in the DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 universe.

“It is a real thrill, and it's particularly a thrill because we're being given some real leeway to do some really important storytelling with these characters. It really defines some great things and to depict some really key moments for them,” Pak said about BATMAN/SUPERMAN. The series will be “a really exciting place to discover who these guys are, and the things we're going to discover particularly in this first story arc will have ramifications later on down the line. We're going to start in the past but it'll reverberate through. It'll be big and crazy and tons of fun.”

  • Wow, Batman finally gets top billing!

See, this is why using World's Finest for Power Girl and the Huntress was a bad idea!

Not sure if Jae Lee is the right artist for this, though.

My main gripe is "Do we really need another Bat-title?"

  • I'm a big fan of both creators, so this is an easy addition to my pull list.

  • I'm with John I like both creators. I put it on the 85% chance I will get this.

Phillip, the last comic pairing these two up wasn't called World's Finest either, so it isn't that big a deal to me. Then again I probably only read an issue or two of the original series while it was being published, so I don't have any great affection towards the title.

  • Yes, you're right, Travis. It's just the traditionist in me. ;-)

I'm going to get it too. I just have reservations on the artwork. I guess it depends on the story. Speaking of which, it goes back to my feelings about reboots. Once you wipe the slate clean (or cleaner), you have to go back and fill in the blanks on the Five Years WE Know Nothing About. Now you have stories that have to be history lessons. Again.

  • Greg Pak?  Hmm...this might have a chance of being good.

I started collecting World's Finest with issue #139, continuing until it was canceled with issue #323, and I have no great affection for the name, either. The whole time I was reading it I wondered how and why a book was named that, because it gave you no clue to the contents. I eventually heard the World's Fair/World's Best/World's Finest story (remember, this was pre-Internet) which explained the origin of the name, but not why DC never changed it to something more commercial (and easier to explain to non-comics-readers). Also, rarely did the stories within live up to such a boastful name.

So I felt no sense of loss when World's Finest Comics was retired as a name and had no problem with Superman/Batman. Although I did wonder why the better-selling character got second billing -- which has been "fixed" for this iteration, I guess.

  • When I started buying it back in '66/'67 it had that glorious banner World's Finest starring Superman and Batman with Robin The Boy Wonder with the wonderful Go Go checks above it. To me it was obvious why it was so proudly called that.

  • This looks like something I'll be happy to read in trades: Lee's art is gorgeous, and Pak has a good reputation -- and I'm curious about the history of these two together, and the Nu DCU as a whole.
