DCnU OMAC

I admit it. I bought this one primarily for the art work. Not just the art, however, but the art coupled with this particular character. I didn’t buy The OMAC Project, for example, but I couldn’t pass up Giffen’s pseudo-Kirby artwork embellishing an actual Kirby Koncept. I’ve been in the mood to read some new, mid-seventies style Jack Kirby lately, but there ain’t gonna be none. Giffen’s artwork evokes Kirby, however, without being derivative. That’s the art. Now the story. Kirby’s OMAC was set in the then-near-future. Now we are living in that future, but it’s not exactly as he envisioned. That’s okay, though, Giffen and Didio have tied OMAC into other Kirby concepts such as the Cadmus Project and Dubbilex. Come for the art, stay for the story. That’s me. I’ll definitely be back next month.

  • I really dug this. I knew I'd enjoy the art, and hoped I'd enjoy the story. And man, did I -- just nonstop action and bizarre Kirby and Kirby-inspired creations. It made the cut!
  • I totally expected to HATE this issue. Giffen is hit-or-miss with me, and Didio has been ALL miss.

I liked it though, so I'll read #2.

I used to listen to WOXY.com; It was the future of rock-n-roll! RIP WOXY

  • I just really loved this comic. This was pure Kirby-inspired fun on every level. I loved seeing stuff like Build-a-Friend, the "Gobble" monsters, Dubbilex, that one yellow and black faced alien scientist (whose name Google is NOT helping me with right now)...

This comic just hit on ALL cylinders. Beautiful stuff, and I cannot wait for one month from now.

  • I liked the story OK but I'm one of those heretics that doesn't like Kirby's character work and likes other people doing his style even less.
  • I just hope if Keith Giffen needs a fill-in, that they can get Jon Bogdanove or Tom Scioli to do an issue of this book. But if not, I will be happy if Giffen pencils it every time. I loved a few of the new DC issues, but this one was my top book of the week.
  • Oh, the name you're looking for is Mokkari, Jeff.

  • OMAC was one of Kirby's odder and least praised 70s work. Joe Kubert drew the covers of the last two or three issues in an attempt to lure new readers! (It only lasted eight!) But still it was cancelled even quicker than The New Gods yet still grows with each decade! There may hope for the Dingbats of Danger Street!
  • Honestly, I respect what he did for the art form as a whole and there's no denying his energy and talent. That being said, I find his characters to be, on the whole, very ugly.
