What I wrote on Facebook:
Superman and the Guardian escorting Don Rickles into Comedy Valhalla. Kirby says: "Don't Ask! Just Mourn!"
I'm going to miss him. Beyond his comedy, Rickles has exemplified friendship to me -- that unusual, ball-busting friendship particularly common among guys. He and Bob Newhart -- two comics with diametrically opposed styles -- had a friendship that lasted decades. That these two guys, who expressed themselves so differently, could be fast and loyal friends always meant a lot to me.
So rest in peace, Don. Thanks for all the laughs, and more.
From everything I've heard, despite his combative style, he was a very nice guy.
People use to vie for the opportunity to be insulted by him.
Great comedian. Terrific in Casino and the Toy Story series. Rest in peace.
I recently saw him in one of the Beach movies made in the early 60's with Frankie and Annette. He was hilarious.
