  • So, a two-hour mid-season premiere. Did anyone else think it sucked?

I confess my enthusiasm for this show has been dimming. It became somewhat apparent to me that I was watching the show out of habit when they killed off Travis and I just didn't care. In fact, I can't think of anybody on the show I would mourn. They could all die, and make room for more interesting characters, as far as I'm concerned.

So maybe I saw what I expected to see.

But, man, this is some bad writing. Every dramatic moment is implausible and clearly staged. People act irrationally just to set up a dramatic payoff. Most actions don't makes sense. Everyone's an idiot. The Colman Domingo character continues to live, despite my having sacrificed a virgin to The Old Ones to get rid of the guy.

Oh, and in two bloody hours, we got maybe five zombies in a throwaway scene. Lordie, showrunners, if you've got the world's boringest characters, throw some damn zombies in!

I don't have the heart to regurgitate all I found lacking in this episode. So somebody rescue me already and give me a reason to keep watching.

  • Um...you should watch so I don't have to?

You didn't say a good reason to keep watching.

  • I watch it because it makes the main show look even better in comparison.

  • I've got such low expectations that I barely noticed how bad it was. One reason I keep watching is the promise of more Ruben Blades screen time.

  • Ooh, I forgot about Ruben Blades. Yeah, he's watchable.

You know why I forgot about Ruben Blades? Because wasn't IN the TWO-HOUR mid-season premiere. No Ruben, no zombies. What were they thinking?

Credit where it's due dept.: On the main show, Andrea was supposed to be a major, long-running character, as she is in the comics. But fans didn't like her. So they killed her off, and had her niche filled with other characters (notably Michonne).

On Fear, they keep pushing characters we don't like at us. The characters aren't popular, and the show runners don't adjust. Sad.

  • I'm not sure why I'm still watching but it paid off to some degree last night. This episode had a lot of the intensity and feeling of desperation that I enjoy in the main series. And we are finally srarting to see some of the characters transform into their post acopalypse badass identities. I really can't stand Troy but I think this new core cast has some potential. They are least more interesting than the original cast.

  • Same here, 'Tec. I turned to my wife after the Pantry scene -- where the suffocated were coming back to life -- and said, "Now, that was good." She agreed. Very tense scene, creepy bordering on terrifying.

But immediately afterward, what I consider the main flaw of FtWD reappeared. And this is, people doing stupid, indefensible things for no reason other than to get the characters from Point A to Point B, or false drama.

In this case it was the daughter going off on her own at the end. That is freaking insane. Anybody on their own in this world would be dead in a week. In the case of an attractive teenage girl on her own, maybe worse than dead before dead. (And then maybe undead.) It's stupid, stupid, stupid -- as my wife said, "you can only survive int that world as part of a pack." You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that, but what's-her-name does it anyway, just to split the core group into two locations, which seems to be a favored plot device.

Another stupidity: Troy brought the horde by leading them with the rocket launcher. Why not lead them away with the same method? Maybe it wouldn't work, but NOT trying that is pretty stupid. It was the first thing I thought of at the end of last week's episode. So: once again, people act stupid to gin up drama.

I'm on the fence about two other acts of stupidity.

One is Troy driving the truck so badly that the rescue goes wrong. Well, he is crazy, so maybe it's more crazy than stupid and explainable that way. Of course, Nick is pretty stupid for letting him drive.

Two is Alicia (remembered her name) coming out of her cage and attacking the zombies. That's pretty stupid, since she was safe where she was and could just pick them off one by one. But she charged out, which is pretty stupid. OTOH, given her state of mind (see above), maybe she had just given up, or had tired tired of waiting for death again and again. Still, given the show's track record, it looks like more stupid acts by smart people just to gin up drama.

I also find it implausible that at least two cast members had zombies at their throat and didn't get bit. (Ofelia and Alicia). Plot armor. But that's common to all shows, so I won't criticize that.

Yeah. They really need to improve on the plotting/logistics. And it really doesn't seem like it would be that difficult. I would think that they could easily put those characters into those same situations in a way that makes more sense. The parent show does it a majority of the time.

But I think they're doing a lot better with character development. Really liked the scene where Nick basically tells Troy to shut up and get it together. I think that's the most I've liked Nick since this show started. Alicia going off on her own mirrors Carol a little bit but I think it's a little too soon. I would have believed it more if she had been put through the wringer a couple more times first.
  • Yeah, Nick gives Troy what-for a lot, so I don't understand why they hang out together. But I did like that exchange.

"He's dead because he was too good for this world."

"No, he's dead because you brought a horde of infected to the ranch. And if those people in the pantry die, it's not because they're too good, it's because we failed."

And then they went and failed. But it was a good exchange.

    Haha. Good point.
