  • Yeah. This is my favorite thing to come out of DC in quite some time. Jeff Parker really gets it.

  • The Space Ghost part was the perfect mix of stentorian heroism, amusing bombast and Saturday morning energy.

  • I wasn't expecting to get some Steve Rude pages too -- this was a treat, top to bottom.

  • I thought the characters were handled well, with no undue liberties taken. The "origin" of Space Ghost was interesting, and the ending definitely left me wanting to know what happens next.
  • To be perfectly honest, the only one of the HB properties I am familiar with other than Jonny Quest is Space Ghost, and I never even saw Space Ghost for the first time until after I was exposed to Nexus in college. So I (like most of us I think…?) are approaching this series from the POV of Jonny Quest. My initial concern was that Future Quest would be “realistic” enough to interact with Jonny’s universe, but I needn’t have worried. The last new Jonny Quest I experienced was the cartoon crossover with Tom & Jerry (and even that was pretty good).

As Cap said in this week’s Comics Guide, “This IS your Jonny Quest.” Jeff Parker writes the other HB characters as if they are being introduced for the first time (which, to me, they are). If I was worried about the other characters not being “realistic” enough for Johnny Quest, I hadn’t considered the full-page panel of Birdman drawn by Steve Rude! Rude’s affinity for Space Ghost is well-known, but if he harbored any disappointment in not being able to draw Space Ghost this issue, he channeled it all into that shot of Birdman.

[Speaking of this week’s Comics Guide, if anyone reading this can identify the exact source of that “Actionverse: The End of All Things” #1 cover, I’d appreciate it. It’s been driving me nuts all week!]

Future Quest #1 is definitely my “Pick of the Week.”

Luke mentioned Secret Wars 12. Not an exact match but could be the source. 1936770169?profile=RESIZE_320x3201936772279?profile=RESIZE_320x320

  • I considered that one and rejected it. On second thought, could be it, though. Cap, do you think that's the one you had in mind?

IIRC, I started watching Saturday morning cartoons around 1976 (when I was 6 or 7) after these shows had run their course. But, I have memories of getting bits and pieces of them sporadically through reruns, maybe after school or when I went to a friends house that had cable. I saw just enough of Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, Herculoids, etc to be frustrated that I couldn't see them regularly. But I remember being aware that these shows seemed superior to things like the Superfriends that were being aired in my era.
  • I actually don't have many childhood memories of Jonny Quest; it had finished airing before I was watching cartoons. That said, I've enjoyed what I've read of his Comico comics run (and I love the Venture Brothers!). But Space Ghost, I remember from Saturday mornings, as well as Thundarr the Barbarian and the Herculoids. But Quest is definitely the best choice for viewpoint character, regardless of how familiar people are with him.

  • The vague memory bouncing around in my head not only includes the main character's feet  but I could swear the defeated person hanging from his right hand is a stretchy guy, probably Mr. Fantastic. But I skimmed through FF covers and didn't see it.

Heck, I even want to say the Ur-cover was by JOHN BYRNE, my half-memory is so infuriatingly almost specific. Argh! In fact, at first blush I assumed the main character was Marvel's Spartan and the cover was from his two-parter in Fantastic Four. But again, skimming through Byrne FF/Uncanny X-Men didn't pan out.

    Maybe I dreamed it.
