The newspaper I work at was just informed that "Ollie & Quentin," a comic strip about a bird, is being cancelled as of the end of the year, so I've been tasked with finding a new one.
I'd appreciate your help by pointing me to a few that you like.
Here are the comics my in-town competitor runs, so we can't use them:
- Dilbert
- Luann
- Pearls Before Swine
- Marvin
- Mother Goose & Grimm
- Between Friends
- Baby Blues
- Hagar
- Lio
- Zits
- Frazz
- Doonesbury
- Get Fuzzy
- Marmaduke
- Pluggers
- Dennis the Menace
- Close to Home
---
And here's what we run, so obviously we can't get them again:
- Ollie & Quentin
- Pajama Diaries
- Fred Basset
- Beetle Bailey
- Sally Forth
- Born Loser
- Mutts
- Blondie
- Baldo
- Sherman's Lagoon
- F Minus
- Jump Start
- For Better or For Worse
- Mark Trail
- Family Circus
- Non Sequitor
- Born Loser
Absolutely no adventure strips. We want a funny one. Also, it needs to be in strip proportions, not panel-sized.
What do you like? Know of any hot up & comers?

...BROOM-HILDA , by (IIRC) Russel Myers ?
Seriously .
It's still funny !!! And well-drawn .
...It's in true B&W , too !!!!!!!!!
I like Candorville. Also Curtis, and Herb and Jamaal.
Since you already have Mutts, if you don't like Stone Soup, what about those stalwarts Crankshaft or Funky Winkerbean?
I would have suggested Frazz, but I'm guessing that's what the "Frzz" in the list of your rival is.
's on my shortlist. Curtis was recently voted off our page, so that's out.
I will definitely check the rest out.
Is Broom Hilda different from Mother Goose & Grimm? Same artist maybe?
...No .
MGGrimmy is set in the " real world " (granted , w/a sh*t-e*t*g-grinning talkin' dawg) , w/ a human mistress , B-H lives in an enchanted forest - though with run-ins with human life !!!!!!!!! - And , her friends are , um , anthomorphic beings also .
Broomy is the central character , too , which IIRC can't be said about Ma Goose . Different artist .
...Does your paper run the dailies in B&W ??? What is it , too , and who's your competitor ???
I'll second "Cul de Sac." I read it online for a while. Not exactly my cup of tea, but it has a stamp of approval from Bill Watterson, so that says a lot.
With my head tucked, I will mention "Frank and Ernest," which I like for the punny word play. Some people might find that hokey, but I think it's an underrated gem.
