For those of you (which is probably most of you) who aren't particularly aware of Illinois politics, our state is in a fair bit of a mess right now — basically, we have one of the worst budget deficits in the country, with no real promise of it getting resolved any time soon. As a result of this, state-funded agencies have seen their budgets slashed, and the state is putting off paying its debts for as long as possible. One such state agency that has had its budget slashed, and which the state is putting off paying, is my workplace and the eight other library systems in Illinois. Our director recently sent out a special message spelling out how bad things are, and that all hit home yesterday when I saw four friends and long-time coworkers laid off because we're, quite simply, running out of money. What I'm getting at is, we need your help! The few of you who are in Illinois, please head over to the website SaveIllinoisLibraries.com and use the form there to ask the governor and comptroller to get us our money. If you're not in Illinois, but know someone who is, or might know someone who knows someone who is, I'm asking you to take a minute to pass this message along. Sorry for the outright advocacy, folks, but...well, I like having a job! :) Thanks!

  • Tracy's from Illinois.

I'll forward this to her to spread the word to her peeps.
  • Wow, that's awful. My sister lives in Illinois; I'll pass this along.
  • Thanks, guys! Our goal, as you may have seen, was 3,000 letters each to the comptroller's and governor's office; we were giving ourselves a week to meet that goal.

We met it by 10:30 a.m. (Though we're not overly publicizing that, to keep the messages coming...)

The response to this has been outstanding...now we just have to hope we see results!
  • Holy Carp!

What a shame, Alan. I'm guessing (remembering?) that you work within the North Suburban Library System? NSLS is, hands-down, one of the finest library systems I've ever had the pleasure of using.
