I don't know that being bald became more popular, but it definitely became more socially acceptable. I imagine the likes of Yul Brynner, Telly Savalas and Lou Gossett Jr. had a lot to do with that.
My guess is that the socially acceptable aspect stems from friends, family and/or other associates shaving their heads in a show of support for cancer victims, who had lost their hair as a result of radiation treatments. Either that, or Mr. Clean has made a great comeback.

I've heard comments in a few places that tattoos have become very common and acceptable to most people over the last several years. It used to be that the person with tattoos was immediately viewed with suspicion.
As for shaved heads, I think I pointed out that a WWII movie having shaven-headed actors portraying soldiers on both sides takes me out of the movie. That wasn't in fashion in Vietnam, let alone WWII.
