Looking at Marvel Previews, here's my first thoughts and gut reactions about the Marvel NOW! debuts and a couple of earlier books, and what I'm planning on getting, trying or ignoring.

INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK: Waid's writing? I'm in. In fact I've enjoyed the last couple of Hulk series except for the Red Hulk. I even liked Savage She-Hulks.

UNCANNY AVENGERS: Strange title but if it stops the Scarlet Witch from being a nutjob, I'll give it a try but we already know that it's NOT the main Avengers book. Rogue and Havok as Avengers is both confusing and exciting.

ALL NEW X-MEN: Great creative team. Provocative storyline. But somehow I doubt that they are the "true" young X-Men from the past. That's way too Convoluting. But I want to see what happens.

IRON MAN: Did Marvel run out of "I" adjectives? Every recent IM series starts off great then gets bogged down in the latest crossover or else Tony (nearly) dies again or both. Not crazy about the color scheme but I'll try it for the first arc. Still I always prefered him as part of the Avengers than as a solo act.

THOR:GOD OF THUNDER: Few details are known but it seems to be more "Adventures in Asgard!" But it's Thor so I'm in.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: The biggest question mark here. Weird premise and Romita Jr's work has been uninspired and sketchy lately. We'll see.

X-MEN: LEGACY: Never liked Legion (the character, not the team!). Giving Professor X a looney son took away from his father-figure role of the X-Men. I'll pass.

FANTASTIC FOUR: Definitely in. Hope it can stand up with all those X-Men and Avengers titles!

FF: Probably not. Not enough to make it interesting.

DEADPOOL: I love the Dead Presidents idea but not with Deadpool. Out.

RED SHE-HULK: I like her better than her father!

What are your feelings and picks?

  • Uncanny Avengers:  I'll give this a try.

Captain America:  On the strength of recent efforts, I'll give it a try.

FF: Had to let it go along with the Fantastic Four.  Afraid I'm too far behind to join in now.

Thor: I tire of adventures in Asgard with endless gods that I've never heard of before, nor their relationship to Thor and each other.

That's about it.  Except, that DD cover with the dangling Electra looks interesting...

  • I'm really wary about getting sucked into another comics universe, so I'm keeping away from Marvel monthlies. But on the trade side, I'll certainly be looking at Waid's Hulk and the two FF books.

  • I hadn’t planned to try any of them, but I did give the “DCnU 52” a go, so over the weekend I decided to sample eight “Marvel NOW!” titles:

    INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK

    IRON MAN

    CAPTAIN AMERICA

    THOR: GOD OF THUNDER

    ALL-NEW X-MEN

    UNCANNY AVENGERS

    FANTASTIC FOUR

    FF

Having said that, I don’t anticipate buying more than one issue of each.

They’re really going to have to sell me and I’m giving them only one issue to do it.

  • INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK: Waid's writing? I'm in. In fact I've enjoyed the last couple of Hulk series except for the Red Hulk. I even liked Savage She-Hulks.

Did you read any of the Red Hulk as written by Parker and drawn by Hardman? I caught on after Loeb and McGinnis ended their run. It was really great.

  • I'll be reading Uncanny Avengers, All New X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Indestructible Hulk.

  • UNCANNY AVENGERS #1: For the first time in my life I find myself buying new comic books (those relatively few I still buy) more for the artwork than the story. It never sounded odd to me to refer to “the Roy Thomas Avengers” or “the Steve Englehart Avengers” or “the Roger Stern Avengers,” yet it seems a bit odd to think of this title as “the John Cassaday Avengers,” but that is what it is (for me). But is this even an “Avengers” title per se? It depends on how one views the team make-up, I suppose. On the surface, it appears at first blush to be 50/50, Avengers vs. X-Men, but it’s also 2/3 mutants. (If you number Wolverine as an Avenger, you may as well stop reading right here.) OTOH, I’ve long railed against Marvel’s “multiple titles” strategy to get more of my comic dollar, and this title may well become my one Avengers title as well as my one X-Men title. Yes, that does mean I plan to stick around for at least one more issue, but probably the conclusion of the first storyline if it keeps up the momentum of the first chapter.

This series springs from the Avengers vs. X-Men crossover. I bought and read the whole thing (all twelve issues, that is), and really regret that decision. It got off to a strong start (the first four issues), then degenerated into became nothing more than a framework on which to hang multiple crossovers. What did I spend, 48 bucks on this series? I have not been this disappointed in bang:buck ratio since DC’s 52. I don’t often get to make this complaint much anymore, that series having weaned me dropping large amounts of cash for series I don’t really like. But, because I for some reason made the decision to stick with Avengers vs. X-Men, I read the whole thing. Maybe I wasn’t reading closely enough (or maybe I glossed over it because I didn’t really believe it), but I hadn’t realized a major character (a major character) had died. Judging by this issue’s framing sequence, he’s not only merely dead, he’s really quite sincerely dead.

  • IRON MAN #1: I got this issue because I said I would. Call it a self-fulfilling prophecy if you like, but I didn’t expect to like this series and I didn’t. I haven’t bought the series regularly since John Jackson Miller’s run, and I haven’t been interested in the character since Marvel made him thoroughly unlikeable during the “Civil war” era. Regarding this issue in particular, you will get one fifth of a story for your four bucks. Am I going to spend another $16 to get the rest of the story? Not bloody likely. This is a new series by a new (to me) writer, and he failed to capture my attention. For the same $20 it would cost me to read the entire story, I get five stories in Hawkeye. In the first issue, Tony Stark shaves his moustache, the first time we’ve seen him without facial hair since the “teen Tony” saga.

  • In the first issue, Tony Stark shaves his moustache ...

Is that the whole plot, or just the highlights?

  • :P

  • The only one I am going to try is FF, because of the Mike Allred art.
