  • ...I bought it after it went annual but missed the last few - then picked up the last .

IIRC , Buddy received an eye injury but did not lose an eye - Or , maybe I'm full of it and it's an elaborate homage to that Charles Schulz " Sally gets ampypobia x amplypobia " (Sp??) sequence in PEANUTS !!!!!!!!! Yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk .

  • ...I just went Wikipedia-ward , expecting that it would say why - But the cyber-age has let me down !!!!!!!!! No specific info on annual-era plot developments there .

      Gawrsh .

  • Oh, Brad! this is off-topic, but weren't you the one who was looking for "pre-code horror with no redeeming social value" a while ago? I can't find the original thread, but if it was you, you may be interested in the recently-released Crime Does Not Pay! collection. It's crime, not horror, and the social value is questionable (it was certainbly questioned at the time), but if you're still (or again) in the mood for pre-code violence, you should take a look. I'll post a proper review later, time permitting. $20 color tpb from Dark Horse.
  • Apparently, Buddy is wearing the eye patch as a fashion statement (I believe the statement is, "I'm an idiot"). Here's Bagge talking about it: http://ask.metafilter.com/158534/Life-happens-To-Buddy-BradleyWTF

It's an odd creative choice--for Bagge, that is. He's got one chance PER YEAR to interest us in his character, and rather than having him run a comics shop, he moves him into a junkyard, gives him an eye-patch, a shaved head and turns him into a Popeye lookalike. Interest. Dwindling.

  • ...Are you suggesting , MSA , that a " Buddy runs a Direct Market comics shop " would be a good " format " , as they say , or so I am told , in the sitcom " biz " , for HATE! ?

      BTW , I found the I-missed-again! ( That Phil Collins...) H8 - Okay , okay , HATE ANNUAL #8 , from 2010 , on my recent maiden LCS voyage , bought it , so...

  • I think it would be of more interest to the audience than running (if that's even what he does) a junkyard. It was interesting to me to hear Buddy and his partner argue about stuff to buy for their store. The last few years, the scenarios have been so bizarre it's hard to care about what happens.

Your shop had a one-year-old comic on the shelf? That's a pretty good back-issue stock.

  • .

In earlier HAs , Buddy was running a knick-knack/collectibles shop of some type , it has become a " real " junk/car parts shop , IIRC , the last ish had a scene clearly setting up a scenario for a split-up with his partner in the store and..Well , would any kind of Fantagraphics title , to do the comics fan thing of " identifying-publishers-by-perceived-characteristics " , be the place to go , at least 25 years or so after the era when they DID publish THE X-MEN COMPANION and ads in THE HULK! for THE COMICS JOURNAL in comic-strip format , headlined " I Found Out About All The Latest Marvels By Subscribing " , yes , 6+ presidential terms later , a FANTAGRAPHICS title to provide - presumably - a reasonably knowledgeable but affectionate portrayal in parody of a DM comics shop ???!!???!!? That would seem to conflict some with the present-day Fantagraphics " brand " .

Bradley , in earlier HAs , was , indeed , running an " old pop-culture shop/collectibles " shop , not a DM new comic books one , it evolved into a " real " junk/auto parts one I suppose Bagge's consious " ' real '-ization " of Buddy , in a sense , IIRC #9 had a scene with his partner clearly setting up a future situation where they split up and argue fiercely about who gets what

  • ...Ehhhhhh...So's , I go and tell myself " I'll practice thread conservation , and , NOT start a new thread for Peter Bagge's RESET , from Dark Horse , which I bought Ish #1 of the 4-ish mini of last LCS time , if I cannot find the old thread about HATE " by which I mean " If it''s not on the first papge of results " - and it was !!!!!!!!!

The thread wuzn't even started by lil' ol' moi !!!!!!!!!

  • ...RESET is a science-fictional concept , I guess...What has been the SF world for sort of " mundane " , set in the r" real "-type world and taking scientific concepts a little bit further , SF ????????? " Science fiction lite " , I have heard .

Though very much drawn in Bagge's later-years style and featuring joky Bagge-style characters , it is  very much quite an SF thing !!!!!!!

  • I read Reset last night, and rather enjoyed it. It felt pretty thin, but it was jam packed full of story and I thought it moved at a decent clip. Too often four issue mins seemed kind of rushed at the end, but I don't think that will happen here. SF lite is a good description for it.
