I was thinking about doing one of my "toy shelf battle royals", and I got to wondering - "What kind of limits does Death from the Endless have?  Can she claim the life of anything that lives whenever she wants, or can it only be when it's "their time"?  How about androids, or machines? Take into account the list below, could she do for Galactus?  Or Daimajin, that is supposed to a be a "go"? Could she harm Mechagodzilla or Tom Servo or Bender? Robots don't die, but I suppose they eventually break down beyond repair - is Death an avatar of that, as well?  How about something like Christine, which is essentially a "possessed" car? Can Death terminate a spirit being?  How about things like Jason, whose power supposedly is that he can't be killed? Or Uncle Sam - can he be killed as long as there continues to be such a thing as an "American spirit"?

I would think she can claim the life of anything anytime she wants, in the same way that Dream can make people dream whenever he wants, Desire can make anyone desire anytime s/he wants, and so on.

I also think Death wouldn't directly interfere in that way -- were she put in a confrontation with any of the below, she'd probably charm her way out. :)
  • She represented the end of one's lifespan which she knew for each of us. She is not the cause of death but the one who makes sure all go where they're supposed to after they die. She is neither super-hero nor super-villain. She just is. She was born when the first living thing was born and she will die when the last living thing dies.

BTW, I remember her making a cameo in , of all books, "Captain Atom" which incensed Neil Gaiman that he asked that no one ever do that again in a regular DC title!
  • Philip said it well. I'd just add that since she even comes for the Endless (she came for Morpheus), I think we can safely assume she would come for gods, superheroes, whatever. But only when their natural lifetime is finished, whatever that is.

Interesting, she was in a Legion of Super-Heroes, too, as I recall, and, for that matter, an Incredible Hulk, as well.
  • Would have had to be some kind of Marvel look-alike to show up in a Hulk comic.

It was more one of those sly "cameos" - the way Clark Kent showed up at a Daily Bugle office party once or that X-Men where Popeye was in the background of a shot, or like Peter Parker's brief appearance in Crisis on Infinite Earths.

As I recall, it was at Rick Jones' wedding reception - she gave Marlo a gift then took off "before that creep Thanos shows up." When Marlo opens the gift, it's a brush. A brush with Death - get it! Yuk-yuk-yuk...
  • Ha, that's a good one. Even Neil Gaiman might be amused.
