RIP Bob Barker

Story Another one of the great voices of my younger days silenced.  Younger people may remember him as the host of The Price is Right, but I first saw him as host of Truth or Consequences when I was little.  Never be another quite like him.

  • Since retiring from TV he had made protecting animals his career.

I also saw him on Truth or Consequences first. I don't think the consequences were ever dire.

Before it was on TV, the popular radio show of the same name apparently ran a contest in 1950 that resulted in the city of Hot Springs, New Mexico, changing its name to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. It has never changed. Here's their Wikipedia page and the city's official page.

  •  There's a Dan Bern song, "Turning Over," that starts out with a reference to that town. The opening line is, "Sitting in a town in New Mexico...named after a game show."

As for Barker himself, I enjoyed him on The Price is Right. He was always a comforting, familiar presence to me on the TV when I was home sick from school. (Less so to the models on the show, seveal of whom leveled sexual harassment suits during the later days of his tenure.)

(I didn't expect to embed the Dan Bern song here, just link to it, but apparently a mere link is not an option on 3.0! Enjoy!)

I misspoke. Inspired by his wife, who predeceased him by many years, he had been supporting animal rights long before he retired with millions of dollars in addition to his statements. I haven't watched it since COVID, but Drew Carrey, in his sign-off, always makes an animal rights statement and mentions Bob.

    • Yeah, that was great about him. I remember at some point he started saying reminding people to spay and neuter their pets, to avoid getting too many strays.

    • I think that's what Drew Carey continues to say.
