Okay , I'm going to do something I've thought about doing a long time , a thread for " soda/soda pop/fizz " , whatever , concentrating , anyway , on such beverages ( & related ??????? to be worked out in use , I guess . ) .
I've hesitated a little on this , party because I've wanted to start out wit something more " cool "/obscure than simply products of the Big Four?? ( Coke , Pepsi , Seven-Up-Dr. Pepper-Canada Dry-Hires , um...Dr. Brown's :-) ?? ) US soda pop companies , but.........Well , I might have found a more obscure subject , but I need to double-check the names first !!!!!!!!! Oh mother .

Up until about last summer I was a HUGE soda drinker. I just made the conscious decision to really cut back on them. Now I have a soda once a week? 2 weeks? I still got the memories in my noggin though.
I think it's kind of interesting that most of the US seems to call it soda but Canada and Pittsburgh call it pop.
I love Coke but I've decided to start eating better because I need to lose some weight. I typically drink maybe 1 soda a day sometimes 2. I've started drinking coke zero which isn't too bad. I plan to eventually cut it down further maybe to the level Travis is at with 1 a week. While delicious, soda is just not good for you. It keeps you awake if you're drinking one with caffine but other than that there's no nutrional benefit to them. I still love them and always will, though. Some of my favorites are:
Coke
Root Beer (IBC is my favorite)
Sprite
Segram's ginger ale
Dr. Pepper
Diet Dr. Pepper Cherry (the only cherry soda I'll drink)
Lime Coke (but it's hard to find now. However firehouse subs has a soda fountain now where it's possible to have lime coke)
I used to drink Mountain Dew as a kid but got burned out on it. I haven't had one in a long time.
I do like some orange sodas but don't drink them much.
Oh, Dr. Pepper 10 is pretty good too.
Diet Coke Lime...ambrosia, I tells ya.

Pop is more widespread than that. I've lived all my life in Ohio and Illinois and I never hear anyone call it soda. Here's the breakdown: http://popvssoda.com/ We also sit on davenports.
I am shocked that, especially this soon after St. Patrick's Day, nobody has mentioned Green River (and Diet Green River, which is almost as good).
There's also Jones Soda, which gets a lot of attention at Thanksgiving when it does its Thanksgiving-flavored six pack.
There used to be a lot of local companies, but I think most of them slowly disappeared as the big guys took up more shelf space with more flavors and something had to give.

That's a great map, we should have a permalink to it for when this discussion pops back up (pun intended). It certainly matches my experience: Pop for me (Michigan), Soda for my wife (Connecticut). I can't say I've heard any Southerners call everything Coke. But I haven't been around all that many native Southerners, either.
...Like my East Texas grandmother !!!!!!!!!!! ( Upshur County . Gilmer, county seat . ) Maybe it was just for Coke proper.........
