That Canceled Comics Thread

I don't think we have one of these on the current board yet. Anyway, two Marvel books are getting the ax after only five issues: Doctor Voodoo and SWORD. I'm disappointed (though not surprised) by the cancellation of SWORD. It's a good series but the first issue sales were so low that I was speculating about its impending cancellation from the beginning. As for Doctor Voodoo, I thought that had been a five-issue mini-series in the first place. I guess I was wrong.

  • It's not unheard of to cancel a miniseries before it ends, y'know ... (see Sonic Disruptors, DC Comics)
  • I've stopped reading Marvel comics, but wasn't SWORD the Dark Reign version of SHIELD (now I get it!)

In which case it would have a limited shelf life anyways...

Nope... The Dark Reign version of SHIELD is HAMMER...

SWORD was established in Astonishing X-Men well before Dark Reign... Basically, it's the galactic counterpoint to SHIELD; what SHIELD does on Earth (as vague a concept as there can be these days, I think), SWORD does in the galaxy.
  • Thanks Alan.

Well, I did say I haven't been reading Marvel lately...
  • In looking over my past comic orders I've come across some interesting cancellations:

Phoenix and Wulf #5 & 6 from Atlas have been canceled, so I'm guessing Atlas Unified is the end of Atlas' comeback? Grim Ghost #6 has also been canceled and that was supposed to be the big conclusion to the first arc!

DC's Suicide Squad Tpb Vol. 2 has been canceled. Due to low orders?

  • Is that for the DCnU Suicide Squad?  Or what?

  • Not sure, but it has me curious too. They had the first book come out of the classic Ostrander series from the 80's. My guess is that it would be that one? Did the first one not sell enough?

I mean, they surely don't have the solicitations out for the second volumes of the DCnU, do they?

  • I'd imagine the first trade sold pretty well.  It's a highly regarded series that went unpublished a disgracefully long time.

Surely it would have sold was well as all those Spider-clone garbage trades that Marvel have been putting out?

  • Yes, this was the Ostrander Suicide Squad series from the '80's. I bought the first trade.

As far as Trades go it sold decently. I do remember the solicits for Vol. 2 being wrong. Maybe DC goofed and they have to re-solicit.

    Here's hoping.

  • I just noticed that Namor the First Mutant and Heroes For Hire are gone, soon to be followed by Herc and Black Panther. And I read those! :-(

Hopefully they won't restart Black Panther as another Daredevil title! Too much of a good thing!
