The Sandman: Overture

The first issue of Neil Gaiman’s long-awaited Sandman prequel shipped yesterday, and so far it’s living up to my every expectation. One caveat, though: if you’ve never read Sandman before and are looking for a good jumping on point, this isn’t necessarily it. Yes, it’s a prequel, but so much of the underlying meaning is derived from a knowledge of the previous series that a new reader might not be able to keep up and may find himself lost.

Here’s a link to NPR’s coverage (takes about seven minutes to listen to):

  • I heard the tail end of an interview with him on NPR this morning. He's my favorite writer that I've never read anything by, plus if his commentary track for "The Doctor's Wife" is anything to go by, he's a huge Doctor Who fan.

  • I agree completely -- it's amazing, but as an introduction, it might be a little too much the deep end of the pool. But man, is it good to have this book back, and in such great artistic hands.

  • DC must thank whatever gods there be that it has an artist of that measure on their books.

    Oh, that's right...
