Crema OGN

Bestselling Writer Johnnie Christmas and Hugo-Award Finalist Dante Luiz Present Crema, A Charming Original Graphic Novel About Coffee, Ghosts, and Romance. Available via ComiXology Originals on July 21, 2020.

New York, NY— “Esme always feared sleep. As a child she feared monsters lurked there. Waiting to swallow her up in the dark where no one would find her. She’d be lost. Invisible. So she made a plan to drink sleep away. Night after night… with cup after cup… of coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.”

So begins Crema, a delectable original graphic novel by #1 New York Times bestselling writer Johnnie Christmas and Prism-Award nominee Dante Luiz, featuring lettering by Ryan Ferrier. Arriving July 21st from comiXology Originals, Crema is the story of a haunted romance that explores the world of coffee and is told in three potent chapters — The Last Roast, The Grind, and Brew — all of which simmer with magical realism and passion.

Esme loves coffee. She works as a barista at a Brooklyn coffee shop and knows everything there is to know about the stuff. But when she drinks too much, she can actually see . . . and talk to . . . ghosts. In fact, Gerry the ghost has been her friend since she was a young child.

Esme often feels invisible, until she meets Yara, heiress to the coffee shop and its coffee bean provider Cherry Mountain Farm. Their world is turned upside down when Esme discovers a mysterious letter written in old Portuguese and encounters the strange ghost of an Old-World nobleman, in the basement of the coffee shop. In the midst of a sexy whirlwind romance, the discovery leads Esme and Yara to the deteriorating (and said to be haunted) coffee plantation in Brazil bringing dark and sinister tidings of unrequited love. Will Yara sell her family’s coffee plantation? Will Esme find peace—and an escape from the ghosts that visit her?

“I wrote most of it in coffee shops around Vancouver, pounding copious amounts of caffeine and listening to hours of cafe talk,” says writer Johnnie Christmas, who is perhaps best known for illustrating Margaret Atwood’s graphic novel debut Angel Catbird. “Dante’s art is beautiful. We were going for magical realism and fabulism in the modern context, utilizing color shifts in places to further heighten romance and ghostly terror.”

Crema is sure to appeal to fans of Neil Gaiman, Laura Esquivel, and Anthony Bourdain. Like the sip of a world class cup of coffee and the first kiss of a new romance, this charming graphic novel will transport you.

Part of the comiXology Originals line of exclusive content, Crema will be available upon release on July 21, 2020 at no additional cost, for members of Amazon Prime, Kindle Unlimited, and comiXology Unlimited, and for purchase on Kindle and comiXology. Prime Reading offers all Amazon Prime members a rotating selection of over a thousand top Kindle books, magazines, short works, comic books, children’s books, and more – all at no additional cost. ComiXology Unlimited now offers over 25,000 comics, graphic novels and manga for just $5.99 a month with a 60-day free trial at comixology.com/unlimited.

be rushed back to print in order to keep up with customer demand for the swashbuckling new series. The A Man Among Ye #1, second printing cover will feature art by Francesca Fantini.

A Man Among Ye brings to life the tale of Anne Bonny and Mary Read as they hoist the skull and crossbones, draw cutlasses, and seek a treasure that will make them legends. In an era when sailing with women was thought to be bad luck—Anne and Mary might just be the only people capable of saving the pirate way of life.

A Man Among Ye is also available for purchase across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

Select praise for A Man Among Ye:

"This comic is so entertaining, I never realized that I was getting a history lesson, too! Win-win!"  —Mark Waid

"This is a must-read for anyone hungry for Anne Bonny and Mary Read's adventure on the high seas!"  —Marc Silvestri

“A Man Among Ye #1 has all the prerequisite charm I am looking from in both a first issue and a story about pirates. I'm intrigued by the tale that Phillips and Cermak have presented and will be keeping an eye out for number 2 when the tides come rolling back in.” —Black Nerd Problems

“Great art.” —Outright Geekery

“The allure of piracy is a potent one in this story that lays a foundation for more creative liberties to be taken, and assuming A Man Among Ye's first issue is any indication and the spotlight stays wholly focused on Anne as it should, those liberties will be taken in the right direction.” —ComicBook.com

“A fun debut.” —Graphic Policy

Adventureman #1 2nd Ptg

PORTLAND, Ore. — The highly anticipated new series launch from Matt Fraction (Sex Criminals, Hawkeye), Terry and Rachel Dodson (X-Men/Fantastic Four)—Adventureman—is being rushed back to print from Image Comics in order to keep up with growing reader and retailer demand. Select praise for Adventureman:

“A fully realized pulp story and family comic held together by metafictional strings. Yes, Grant Morrison fans, there's a sigil. Plus, there's a never-ending flurry of widescreen pages with detailed art. Middlewest #18

“This book has meant so much to me. I’m not crying, YOU’RE CRYING.”

In Middlewest #18, the missteps of the past meet an uncertain future as the roving monster that Dale has been confronts the ruinous behemoth that Abel has become.

Corona added: “A beautiful lesson of life and family that will stay with me for a long time. Truly humbled by the extraordinary talent of the team that pushed the comic to new heights every month. SfSx v1: Protection

“For SfSx, a jailbreak heist action-adventure, skills like bondage and pole dancing are about to become quite useful.” —Rolling Stone

PORTLAND, Ore. — From notorious kink writer Tina Horn (Why Are People Into That?! podcast) and featuring a

diverse group of artists, comes SfSx (Safe Sex), Vol. 1: Protection, a social thriller about sex, love, and torture. This first volume in the critically acclaimed, ongoing Image Comics series, will collect issues #1-7 into trade paperback this July.

Set in a draconian America where sexuality is strictly bureaucratized and policed, SfSx follows a group of queer sex workers trying to keep the magic alive in an underground club called the Dirty Mind. Using their unique talents for bondage and seduction, they resolve to infiltrate the mysterious government Pleasure Center, free their incarcerated friends, and fight the power!

Best described as Sex Criminals by way of Gilead, Publishers Weekly said of it: “readers with a yen for third-wave feminist fury will find plenty to enjoy in these porn-friendly adventures.”

Fans of Hustlers and Sunstone won’t want to miss out on this hot new series.

SfSx (Safe Sex), Vol. 1: Protection (ISBN: 978-1-5343-1585-3, Diamond Code MAR200113) will be available on Wednesday, July 22 and in bookstores on Tuesday, July 28. It can be pre-ordered at your local comic book shop or independent bookstore via Bookshop or IndieBound, or it can be pre-ordered on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, and Indigo.

SfSx (Safe Sex), Vol. 1: Protection will also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

Select praise for SfSx:

“In Tina Horn’s racy sci-fi thriller, sex workers are the heroes we always needed. It asks us: What does society look like when sexuality is policed and monitored with the full weight of a fascist dragnet?” —Playboy

“Part-thriller, part-political statement and unlike anything else in contemporary comics. Handmaid’s Tale, 1984, and Vonnegut, all filtered through the sensibilities of queer punk with an antagonist that feels at once entirely prescient and also utterly chilling.” —The Hollywood Reporter

“For SfSx, a jailbreak heist action-adventure, skills like bondage and pole dancing are about to become quite useful.” —Rolling Stone

“The action-filled story of an anti-sex dystopia, but with heart. NSFW as heck.” —Polygon

“A celebration of the way queer people, sex workers, and other sexual outsiders are always at the forefront of advancing our cultural ideas about sex and pleasure.” —Teen Vogue

“SfSx zeroes in on the dystopian, anti-sex nightmare we seem to be hurtling towards. Visceral, arousing, and terrifying. Tina Horn's writing gave me goosebumps, wishing I could visit The Dirty Mind, and fearing that we'll soon live in a future where such a place is no longer possible.” —Stoya

“SfSx shoves its sparkly stiletto heel right in the face of anyone who has ever tried to keep sex workers down. Tina Horn’s work reminds us how important sexual freedom is to the American spirit.” —Stormy Daniels

“Horn has shown herself to be a writer who has taken to comics incredibly well, adept at both writing visually but also has brilliant dense prose and dialogue which contribute to incredibly vivid worldbuilding.” —Comics Beat

Tartarus #4

That Texas Blood #1 2nd Ptg

PORTLAND, Ore. — Breakout hit That Texas Blood by critically acclaimed Criminal colorist and first time solo artist

Jacob Phillips and writer Chris Condon is being rushed back to print in order to keep up with overwhelming demand. The new neo-noir crime series is perhaps best described as Southern Bastards and True Grit meets Breaking Bad and puts a contemporary spin on the Western genre.

That Texas Blood kicks off when the search for a casserole dish leads to a dark and tense confrontation on Sheriff Joe Bob Coates’ 70th birthday.

Coates has always lived in Fort Lehane. He's always been in Ambrose County. It's always been in his blood. It's a Texas thing. But the crimes don't stop. And they don't get easier.

For some reason... they keep getting worse. And worse. And... Well. It's Texas. And Joe Bob is tough. Maybe he's tough enough to fight it. To last. It's in his blood, after all. That Texas Blood.

That Texas Blood #1, second printing (Diamond Code APR208642) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, July 22.

That Texas Blood is also available for purchase across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

Select praise for That Texas Blood:

“Chris and Jacob pull off something remarkable here. A vivid and bright story that nails a thorough sense of foreboding and darkness. A shocking amount of talent for a duo so fresh to comics!” —Chip Zdarsky, Sex Criminals, Daredevil

“A delightfully dark debut.” —Nerdist

“Blood and cruelty spill into the kindness and manners that provide Coates’ town a quaint, charming appeal... That Texas Blood is a ghost story and a Western, and it questions whether there is a difference between the two. As it builds upon the legacy of other modern Westerns, which raised similar questions, it’s not difficult to see how the series may stand comfortably upon the shoulders of giants.” —ComicBook.com

Giant HC

By Mikaël

"Mikaël conjures drama in each frame, with high-contrast and earth and sepia-toned washes that fit the period feel, which is underscored by historical references." – Booklist

From French Canadian cartoonist Mikaël, Giant tells the story of the immigrants who built Rockefeller Center during the Great Depression in 1932.  The lead character is an Irish immigrant nicknamed "Giant", working high above the New York skyline, who engages in a letter exchange with the wife of colleague who fell to his death, posing as him and sending money as he doesn’t have the courage to tell her the truth

9x12, 120pp., full color HC, $24.99, ISBN 9781681122533, e: 9781681122540, $16.99

Phoolan Devi, Rebel Queen

By Claire Fauvel

"This striking biography is as memorable as its vigilante heroine." – Publishers Weekly

She rebelled against the ancient tribal rules of India, her country, resulting in her becoming a Robin Hood type bandit. Essentially sold at the age of 11 to become a wife for a much older man, she ran away when he raped her. From that point on, there were few choices for her but to join a roaming gang of bandits, her ambition leading her to become their Robin-Hood-for-women rebel chief.

Ultimately, society caught up with her and she even became a strong voice for change, women, and social justice as a representative in the Indian parliament.

Canopus #4

If you've been following along so far with CANOPUS, the sci-fi mini-series by writer/artist/musician Dave Chisholm from Scout Comics, you know it's been quite the ride. While the first issue starts as the story of a marooned astronaut trying to get home, that admittedly driving plot almost immediately gave way to something . . . weirder. And the weird has continued notching up, straight through next week's CANOPUS #4, the final issue.

One of the first things that jumps out at you when reading this series is how the twists you thought you anticipated wind up not being quite what you had in mind, with each issue landing a shattering reveal that leads right into the next. The objects littering this strange planet from Helen's memories have both illuminated her life for us and given the story texture and depth beyond its "race to get home" structure, as well as subtle clues to what's ultimately happening and why she's here. If it wasn't clear before, #4 drives home the point that the importance of this mission (or at least the part Dave wants to show us) is personal, as Helen's saga reaches an emotional punch of a conclusion.

Here's a folder with review copies of all four issues so far (just in case you need to catch up) and here's some shareable art from the issue. Thanks so much for considering a review, and we hope you enjoy reaching the end of the voyage in these well-earned final pages!

Picked that up at the B & N 17 days ago.  Still reliably entertaining.

  • "Green Lantern/Green Arrow: Space Traveling Heroes TPB"

This was solicited as a hardcover.

I hope the listing is in error.

  • DC's website doesn't specify, but it's priced at $49.99. Sounds like a HC to me.

  • Amazon lists it as a hardcover, so whatever list I cut-and-pasted is probably wrong. Probably!

  • "DC's website doesn't specify, but it's priced at $49.99. Sounds like a HC to me."

That's odd, too, because it was solicited as a $34.99 HC. Guess I'll find out later today. Maybe not, though. There's a difference between shipping to the distributor and shipping to the shops. In many cases (as with DC Goes to War), the items on the list Cap posts (especially the HCs), arrive in my shop the following week. Plus, what with DC's new distribution channels and COVID, shipping manifests are all over the place. Basically, it'll be in your shop when you see it.

  • It turns out that "Space Travelin' Heroes" did ship to my LCS last week, it just didn't end up in my P&H for whatever reason (and I didn't ask about it because I assumed it was one of those distributor/retailer discrepancies I mentioned). My retailer got three in and he sold through. Restock, which under normal circumstances would have been today, will be next week.

  • My LCS guy says what's supposed to ship doesn't always, and that's been the case since the COVID shutdown. But there's also the problem of DC's new distribution system. I look at a variety of sources every week to see what DC is shipping -- DCComics.com, UCS, Diamond, Amazon, solicitations and whatever else Google suggests -- and no two agree. I used to Frankenstein lists, but that's a huge time-suck, and still not accurate. Now I just go with UCS and shrug.

  • A happy accident sent me back to my LCS today, and they had just received their restock order, which i normally wouldn't have seen until next Wednesday. Althought it was solicited as as $35 HC, it is in fact a $50 HC. (In case anyone was wondering.)
