KALI HC

Story: Daniel Freedman | Art/Cover: Robert Sammelin | $29.99

From Dark Horse Books, Daniel Freedman (Raiders), and renowned illustrator Robert Sammelin comes Kali, an original graphic novel that’s a nonstop, high-octane existential action spectacle.

Stabbed in the back, poisoned and left for dead by her own biker gang, Kali sets off on a one-way road of vengeance across a war-torn desert battlefield. With impending death coursing through her veins and a fascist army hot on her tail, Kali will stop at nothing to get her revenge, even if it’s the last thing she ever does.

“Seven years in the making, Kali represents a major creative milestone for me in more ways than one. What began as an exploitation throwback evolved into the most emotionally powerful story I have written and I do not say that lightly.” — Daniel Freedman

Kali is the comic book I’ve always wanted to make; a cinematic story fusing Sergio Leone and Jack Hill, bikers and bombast, revenge and psychedelia — an effortless story, but one with a violently hot beating heart.” — Robert Sammelin

  • Because I have the maturity of a 12-year-old boy, my first thought looking at this cover was: How does she sit down with a gun on her butt?

SHOCK SHOP #1 (OF 4)

Story: Cullen Bunn | Art/Cover: Danny Luckert, Leila Leiz  | $3.99

Cullen Bunn (Harrow County), Danny Luckert (Regression), and Leila Leiz (The Last Book You’ll Ever Read) present Shock Shop! Shock Shop is a brand-new horror anthology flip comic that takes place in a haunted comic book shop, featuring a twisted retailer filled with tales of terror. Readers will encounter two scary stories told across four comic issues. Each issue will feature variant covers by a host of horrifyingly talented artists, including Francesco Francavilla, Fábio Moon, Caitlin Yarsky, James Stokoe, James Harren, and Tonci Zonjic.

In FAMILIARS: After a painful divorce and custody battle, Trevor rents a house and tries to rebuild his life. Soon, he discovers that his house appears to be "haunted" by more than one spirit: the minions of a long-dead coven of witches. When the creatures begin feeding on Trevor's feelings of anger and guilt, they lash out at those who draw his ire, whether he wants them to or not.

In SOMETHING IN THE WOODS, IN THE DARK: A husband and wife who are going through a tough time go on a camping trip with a few friends into the deep woods. As they trek further into the forest, they realize that they are being stalked. Something in the woods starts killing the campers — a hideous, inhuman thing that may have more ties to the campers than any of them realize.

Shock Shop #1 will be available at comic stores September 7, 2022 and is available for pre-order at your local comic shop, with a retail price of $3.99. Shock Shop is recommended for ages 14 and up.

  • The Francavilla cover below appears to be an homage to House of Mystery #174. It's not exact, but the "In loving memory of Neal Adams" attribution makes me think that's what Francavilla had in mind.
  • Everybody here probably already knows this, but House of Mystery #174 was the first issue after Joe Orlando took over as editor in 1968, returning the title to mystery/suspense. HoM #143-173 featured superhero strips, first Martian Manhunter and then Dial H for Hero.

He has the costume, and he has a mission ... he just has to make it through the night in one piece. The swimwear shoot is on a set where he has a chance encounter with Karma, one of the lead models. Karma is fiercely independent woman who is working on being more than a star, but a brand. In Alex she sees someone new to her world, unjaded by it. Someone with a fresh eye... and she thinks it could be fun opening his mind to new adventures.

DEAD LUCKY #2

EVERYDAY HERO MACHINE BOY GN

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's … Machine Boy! When Machine Boy falls from the sky into the domed city of Mega 416, he leaves a wake of destruction in his path … until Karate Grandpa is able to turn on his heart. Now, Machine Boy wants nothing more than to become a hero! Whether he is fighting giant bugs in the school's basement, rescuing cats from trees, or making the perfect spaghetti sauce, Machine Boy is always looking for the best way to help others. But when his heart begins to interact dangerously with other debris from space, Machine Boy wonders if he can be a power for good after all.

Tri Vuong and Irma Kniivila create a funny and engaging all-ages adventure that asks: Can you override your own programming?

"Machine Boy was initially inspired by '80s anime, 16-bit video games, and kung fu movies but as Irma and I delved deeper into his world, we found ourselves telling a story about the pain and joys of growing up,” said Vuong. “Hopefully it touches on those collective childhood memories and experiences that we all seem to share."

“The world of Everyday Hero Machine Boy kept getting more ludicrous as we worked on the story, but somehow more real. I wanted to live in Mega416 and could relate to the characters, even though that character might be a chicken jock,” said Kniivila. “We had a lot of big feelings while working on this story, and hope that it inspires big feelings too!”

Available everywhere books are sold September 2022, Everyday Hero Machine Boy marks the first Middle Grade release from Skybound Comet, a new original graphic novel imprint aimed at Young Adult (Ages 12+) and Middle Grade (Ages 8-12) audiences, but sure to captivate readers of all ages.

“Creators Kniivila (Year of the Dog) and Vuong (The Strange Tales of Oscar Zahn) present a funny, uncommonly charming mash-up of martial arts, superhero, and sci-fi comics. The rare all-ages title that will entertain, and perhaps even enthrall, adolescents and adults alike.” — Library Journal (Starred Review)

“Machine Boy’s eccentricity and charm is undeniable. Their minimalistic approach to storytelling elicits a vast array of emotions only accomplished by creators who are at the top of their game. Within the span of a single chapter, I laughed, choked back tears, and then cheered for this lovable android. This should be a perennial read for readers of all ages.”  — Francis Manapul (Detective Comics, Justice League)

The trailer grants an all-new sneak preview of the eponymous hero as he tries to save his city, survive high school, and eat copious amounts of spaghetti, all while attempting to override his programming. Set against an 8-bit paradise, Everyday Hero Machine Boy is the heartwarmingly cool story that will inspire you to activate your heart and be an everyday hero.

  • Once again, a book not aimed at me. But as has been pointed out, that doesn't mean I won't like it.
  • But here's the thing: I'll never know if I like it, because life is short, and I've got stacks of books to read that I know I'll like. So I'll never take the time to experiment with something so obviously aimed at a different demographic.
  • If someone else wants to give it a go, that's great — and let me know what you think. I'm not so old I can't be schooled!
  • Here's a preview.

ALIEN #1

Story: Phillip Kennedy Johnson  | Art: Julius Ohta | Cover: Björn Barends | Parental Advisory | $3.99

Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson will continue his bold contributions to the world of ALIEN in an all-new comic series! Featuring the incredible and terrifying artwork of rising star Julius Ohta, ALIEN #1 will kick off a new saga that will serve as a perfect entry point into the legendary horror/science-fiction franchise for newcomers and a must-read for longtime fans. Packed with thrilling revelations and fresh insights into the ALIEN mythos, this new chapter promises to further explore the hard-hitting themes Johnson presented in the title’s first era as a new cast of characters must go deep into Xenomorph territory for a chance to combat human extinction.

A small colony of synths have settled in secret on a backwater moon. When a company of United System soldiers come to them for help retrieving biotechnology on a hostile planet that could be the key to saving humanity, the synths must decide whether the prospect of peace between man and machine is worth the risk of betrayal.

“Writing season one of Marvel’s Alien was a horror fanboy’s dream come true,” Johnson said. “We got to tell exactly the story we wanted to tell, bringing horrific new species of Xenomorph to life while also exploring the themes of family and corporate distrust that are such a crucial part of the films. And as much as I loved our season one, we’re outdoing it in every way in the new series.

“Julius Ohta is exceeding all expectations as series artist. Every background, every facial expression and emotion, and of course, all the environmental creepiness and full-on body horror is lovingly rendered by Julius, who is at the absolute TOP of his game right now. I can’t say enough great things about him. Fans are going to be truly spoiled. Stay tuned for one of the best, most beautiful Alien comics ever made.”

“When I got invite to draw the new Alien series, I had a professional and standard reaction - I was glad to be invited and I was determined to make it the best work of my life. But then, a few minutes later, it came all at once — I understood that I was going to draw Alien … THE ALIEN. I freaked out (in a very good way) and then I knew the tremendous responsibility that is to be in this franchise,” Ohta added. “Even though there’s a huge responsibility to bring the series to life, I couldn’t expect a better welcome from the creative team. It’s been fantastic to work with Phillip, Sarah [Brunstad] and everyone involved. Phillip is a genius and also a gentleman and is always looking for something to make the story better. When I started reading the script, I couldn’t stop until I reached the last page. I could talk about it forever. … Sarah is such a kind editor and it’s been a dream to work with these guys!

“The Alien franchise influenced an entire generation and I’m among the people who were hugely influenced by the movies, designs, games and so much more. I hope readers enjoy the series we are bringing to them.”

MAN, MACHINE, AND THE MOST TERRIFYING CREATURE IN THE UNIVERSE … IT’S AN EXPRESS ELEVATOR TO HELL, AND YOU’RE GONNA WANT TO BE ON IT!

  • I've got the first two Dark Horse "Alien" omnibuses, which probably renders redundant most of the "Alien" comics in my longboxes. Which is OK, since that collection has lots of holes in it. I needed the omnibuses to finish reading some incomplete miniseries that I knew I'd never take the time to complete.
  • So I've learned my lesson. This time, with Marvel, I'll just forgo the floppies and wait for the omnibus. And if it doesn't come out until I'm moldering in the grave, then I'll have saved some money!

ALL-OUT AVENGERS #1

Story: Derek Landy | Art/Cover: Greg Land | Inks: Jay Leisten | Colors: Frank D’armata | $3.99

Announced by Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski at Fan Expo Philadelphia, there’s a brand-new Avengers ongoing series coming in September that’s going to launch readers directly into the thrilling missions of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! Strap in for ALL-OUT AVENGERS!

An alien attack. A missing piece of wormhole tech. A city warped, its citizens transformed into hideous creatures loyal to an Empress from the far side of the universe. And a certain Captain Marvel, looking to her fellow Avengers with murderous intent ...

ALL-OUT AVENGERS will be written by award winning novelist Derek Landy, known for his outstanding work in the recent CAPTAIN AMERICA & IRON MAN limited series. Landy will be joined by Greg Land, the superstar artist who over the years has brought some of Marvel’s most memorable battles to life. Together, Landy and Land will throw readers into the middle of some of the Avengers’ most pulse-pounding adventures to date! From page one, panel one, the Avengers will be knee deep in the action with no setup, no explanations, and no time for questions! Beware of whiplash as you discover more with the flip of each explosive page!

The opening issue will star all your favorite A-List Avengers — Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Blade and Spider-Woman — as they overcome the odds and struggle to defuse a chaotic situation caused by a deadly new Marvel villainess. … They’ll have to perform feats like never before as each breathtaking issue raises the stakes higher and higher for an overarching and truly unpredictable saga.

Here’s what Landy had to say about the upcoming series:

“When Tom Brevoort approached me with this concept, I thought it was an inspired idea, a slice of creative genius, and also totally unworkable ...! But the chance to launch a new Avengers title, and the chance to write any character who'd ever BEEN an Avenger, was impossible for this particular Marvel fanboy to resist. Add in the fact that Tom wanted to get Greg Land on art and my fate was pretty much sealed.

“The trick was to work within the confines inherent in the concept, but also to find a way to deliver what everyone would expect: a continuity of ideas and the development of an overarching storyline. I needed to find the hook that drags the reader from issue to issue, and I figured the best way to do that was to put the Avengers in the exact same situation as the reader: they are aware that this is happening, but they don't know why.

Greg Land, Jay Leisten, and Frank D’Armata — it's such a thrill to be working with a team like this, a team responsible for making ALL-OUT AVENGERS the best-looking book you've got coming your way.”

“Having just finished up a nice run on the awesome Symbiote Spider-Man series of books, I wasn't sure what would be next. Getting All-Out sounded like it would be good but I got really excited when I read the synopsis,” Land added. “After reading Derek's script for #1, I knew it was going to be a fun and challenging project. All of the scripts so far have been full of interesting and cool scenes for our changing roster of Avengers. Hitting each issue in the middle of the action is a terrific story vehicle and gets us off running from the start. I hope everyone can see the excitement in the artwork and all-out action( pun intended). Along with my very talented buddies Jay Leisten and Frank D'Armata, we hope to give readers something to enjoy!”

  • Read an interview with Derek Landy, and he says he got the idea for this from when he was a kid, buying comics at random at flea markets, which were often midway through a storyline or even at the end. So he's writing a comic book that basically starts in the middle or at the end, and you pick up how everybody got there along the way. But there is an overarching storyline that will some major Marvel baddie at the back of it.
  • Also, unlike a standard Avengers title, there  is no "main team" whose every member has to be serviced every issue. Landy will use whoever fits the story. If that appeals to you — and I admit, it kinda thrills my inner 12-year-old — then you'll like this.
  • Here's a trailer.

Story: Richard Dinnick | Art: Jose Holder | Cover: Andy Clarke | Aftershock | $4.99

Sally cannot let this go, and her investigation into the murder introduces her to an MI-6 agent named Edward Tarn, also curious about the so-called accident.

Together, Sally and Ed discover an off-world explanation for the assassination, plus an alien invasion and the craziest plot twist of all: an interplanetary travel system buried deep beneath the London Underground!

Written by Richard Dinnick (Doctor Who: The 12th Doctor, Thunderbirds are Go!, Lost in Space: Countdown to Danger) and drawn by Jose Holder (X-Men: Apocalypse, Assassin's Creed: Origins, Rainbow Six Siege).

Felicia does the best she can for her clients, but her job becomes much harder when swarms of unnervingly organized pests start running rampant across the city! Enjoy the first issue of this NON-STOP! title, followed by the entire story collected soon in one volume.

  • Good grief, there are a lot of first issues this week! I don't have much to say about most of 'em, though. Like this one. That cover does not excite me.

HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER TP

Story: Casanova Frankenstein | Art: Glenn Pearce | $29.99

How to Make a Monster is Frankenstein's unflinching memoir of growing up as a Black INTJ 13-year-old in 1980.

Conveyed as a bleak first-person narrative with darkly humorous overtones, Casanova Frankenstein reveals how real-life experience shaped his hard-bitten, survivalist view of life. His was a world of fear and isolation punctuated by bullying thugs, the stifling atmosphere of the Lutheran school on the South Side of Chicago, racial segregation, unapproachable girls, and a home life consisting of an emotionally distant and unsupportive mother and a violent, alcoholic cop father who was not above giving his son a good thrashing now and again while preaching Christian family values. It is a searing portrait of an unbearably painful upbringing.

How to Make a Monster is illustrated by Australian outsider artist Glenn Pearce in a rare creative symbiosis in which Pearce captures Frankenstein's inner turmoil using a variety of artistic approaches ranging from naturalistic portraiture to outrageously inventive phantasmagoric imagery. A seamlessly contrapuntal balancing act between Frankenstein's raw, unadorned writing and Pearce's stunningly detailed drawing.

  • I had to look up “INTJ,” and apparently it stands for an “Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Judging” personality. If that helps.
  • Isn’t Casanova Frankenstein the name of the villain in Mystery Men?

SURVIVOR: ARON'S STORY GN

Story: Alex Teplish | Art: Deveo Media Studio, Adrian Barbu, Oana Vaida, Marius Antim | Cover: Albert Urmanov | Graphic History Publishing | $25.00

Aron considered himself a typical Jewish-Soviet boy, getting along with his Russian and Ukrainian neighbors while growing up in multi-cultural Odessa of the 1930s. Life didn't come easy to his Yiddish and Russian-speaking family, but they got by, assimilated to their surroundings. As the '40s approached, Nazi Germany began its march across Europe, with the extermination of the Jewish people as one of its aims. Allied with Romania, the Nazis now set their sights on the Soviet Union, fighting the Red Army for territory while committing mass atrocities against the Jews and other people they deemed "unfit for life". Living through the Odessa Massacre, Aron, his two brothers, sister, and parents were expelled from their home city, struggling to survive the Holocaust perpetrated by the German and Romanian Army along with their local collaborators.

The first part of this book shares Aron's experience of living in Odessa, Ukraine (part of the former USSR) and his survival as a teenager under the Romanian/Nazi occupation during WWII. Aron's story, visually depicted here in the graphic novel form, allows us to experience the events first hand, through the eyes of young Aron himself, while learning about one of the least documented episodes of the Holocaust. The second part of the book delves deeper into the history of the Jewish Diaspora, connecting this historical background to the roots of Jewish persecution, World War II, and the Holocaust.

Many of the events from Aron's life presented in this book have been translated from his interview to the Shoah Foundation, founded by Steven Spielberg.

  • Always a sucker for true-life, historical stories.

TEXAS JACK VOL 1 GN

Story: Pierre Dubois | Art: Dimitri Armand | Cinebook | $15.95

Texas Jack is a legendary hero, a crack shot and a champion of the helpless who gunned down dozens of enemies ... in his traveling show and the novels that bear his name! Yet to preserve his reputation, he eventually takes the job, and leaves with his three co-stars in the show.

  • European Westerns can be really imaginative. I guess they're far enough away in time, space and culture that the Wild West must seem like a sort of Never-Never Land where anything's possible.

    • Wait! I already know how to read comics, don't I? Maybe I've been doing it wrong all these years.

Not much to do with what you're asking here, but it was a bit of an adjustment when I started reading manga that was printed "Japanese-style".  It's not just the "back-to-front, right-to-left" stuff, but many of the visual cues are different in manga.  (For example, knowing that a character getting a sudden explosive nosebleed is a comedic way of expressing lust.)

Many manga that I read have a section at the end explaining various obscure cultural references, or explaining difficulties in translating word-play or regional accents and such.  Some jokes just cannot be properly translated, and translators will end up  having to  crete a new joke that has an approximately similar effect.

It just now occurred to me to wonder if Japanese translations of American comics had similar sections. I imagine that references to Captain Kangaroo or Anthony from the Prince Spaghetti commercials or someone saying "It's the bees knees!" would be quite obscure to the average Japamese reader.

  • "Does 'Omega' mean it's over?"

Does "ultimate" mean the last? Was "Final Crisis" final? Do "anniversary" issues mark anniversaries?

"It's another big week for PS Artbooks!"

But still no "Dick Briefer Frankenstein" slipcase. :(

  • Baron, everything I learn from you blows my mind. Please continue at every opportunity.

Nosebleeds? Really? I can't wait to tell my wife. I thought the relentless ellipses was a mystery.
