OK, I'll be handling this one a little differently than some of the other TV series I've re-watched. I don't own every episode of this, and what I do own isn't in broadcast order, so I'll be watching them as I find them, and updating this initial post as to where they sit in the show's history.

Show 617: "The Sword and the Dragon", first broadcast 12/3/1994

The Film: This is a Roger Corman Americanization of the 1956 Sovfilm "Ilya Muromets", and tells the adventures of said folk-hero.  There's a three-headed dragon in this that sort of looks like King Ghidorah's idiot brother, who isn't allowed out much. It's actually gorgeously shot, and not that bad of a picture.

The Host Segments:  DM Servo convinces Mike and Crow to play D&D. They are unenthusiastic. The Mads are visited by their new neighbors from Deep 12, Bridget and Mary Jo. They are freaked out by the presence of actual women. They ask Mike and the Bots to provide some entertainment.  Our heroes put on a really lame satirical political revue, and by "really lame", I mean "still somewhat funnier than Mark Russell".  The women flee at their earliest opportunity. Mike and the Bots do a "Sven and Ole" joke in the style of Ingmar Bergman. It kills a lot of time. Gypsy sings in style of Ilya's wife.  Mike and the Bots are playful woodland creatures.  Ilya Muromets visits the SOL. He is now working at the IHOP, and goes in quest of a side order of ham. Servo reads Gypsy's review of their earlier revue.. She lauds Mike but pans Servo.  In Deep 13, the Mads hide form the ringing phone.

Favorite Lines: "Finland's annual emotional outburst!"

Rating:  A fun episode, one the holds up to re-watching.  Amusing stuff.

I remember talking about this on the online Compuserve Forums and wondering if the neighbors from Deep 12 were also mad scientist and maybe they had a captive in space who was forced to watch TV game shows.

Show 624: "Samson vs. The Vampire Women", first broadcast 3/25/1995

The Film: This film is from 1961.  "Samson" (a.k.a. "The Silver Maskman") is, infact, the legendary Mexican masked  luchador El Santo who, in Mexico, at least, was a star on a level that even Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan never approached.  The story involves a scholar whose daughter is menaced by a cabal of female vampire. He calls in a wrestler for help, the way you would in a situation like that. Samson ends up beating the vampires and rescuing the girl more by dumb luck than anything else. The film is amusing in a off-beat way, and good fodder for the MSTies.

The Host Segments:  Mike calls for a moment of silence. Tom jabbers all through it.  A mysterious figure in white delivers Chinese food to the Mads. Frank's fortune cookie has a cryptic message.  Mike and the Bots do Three Stooges-themed food humor. Frank eats all of the Mad's food himself.  Mike teaches the Bots how to play Stratego. Crow again spots the mysterious figure in white.  Torgo the White (Mike Nelson) assumes Frank into Second Banana Heaven. Dr. F discovers Frank's absence and sings the deranged and yet somehow plaintive and touching "Who Will I Kill?".  Mike has the Bots read their letters to Frank. Frank manifests to say goodbye to Dr. F and to offer encourage to those working for abusive bosses.

Rating: A pretty good episode, overshadowed by Frank's departure.

Show 110: "Robot Holocaust", first broadcast 1/13/1990

The Short: "Commando, Cody, Radar Men From The Moon", Chapter Nine: "Battle in the Stratosphere".  Cody does some more stuff, but the film breaks and we never see the end of the episode.

The Film: From 1986, this was the first color film the show ever did, and, at the time, the most recent film. It's a confusing mess about a post-apocalyptic revolt against an evil computer.   The lead villainess has really poor diction.

The Host Segments:  Joel and the Bots play a blues song. Joel invents the nitro-burning funny-pipe. The Mads invent a stocking mask with articulated eyebrows.  Tom and Crow pressure Joel to do tricks for them. Cambot gives Joel and the Bots a laugh track. Joel and the Bots pretend to be characters from the movie. It doesn't go well.  Joel wants viewers to name the Avocado Guy from the film.

Rating:  Another so-so first season episode. I'm starting to feel that the show really didn't start to get good until around the third season.

Show 508: "Operation Double 007" (a.k.a. "Operation Kid Brother"), first broadcast 9/11/1993

The Film: This picture is from 1967 and Italy.  It's titled "Operation Double 007", but on the packaging it says "Operation Kid Brother", I'm guessing for legal reasons. It features Neil Connery (brother of Sean) as a plastic surgeon who is the brother of a secret agent and who gets caught up in a secret intrigue of its own.  Several actors who were in actual Bond films appear here, including Adolfo Cieli, Lois Maxwell, Daniela Bianchi, Anthony Dawson and Bernard Lee. It's not that good. I gather Brother Sean was not too thrilled about the whole proceedings.

The Host Segments:  Joel shows the bots his old home movies (while eating popcorn out of Tom's head). Frank invents lederhosen-hosen. Crow invents Sarah the Bobbing Buzzard. Joel plays the heel from the movie. Joel and the Bots compare and contract the lives of Sean and Neil Connery.  In Deep 13, Torgo delivers the soda he forgot from the Mads' pizza order back in Show 424, then asks to use the Mads' bathroom, to their horror.  Dr. F magnetizes the SOL, and we end with Torgo flushing, and his theme playing over the closing credits.

Rating: An OK episode. I did like the callback to the "Manos" episode".

Show 615: "Kitten With A Whip", first broadcast 11/23/1994

The Film: From 1964, this film features Ann-Margret overacting her socks off as an escapee from a juvenile detention center who latches onto to a wannabe Senatorial candidate. Said candidate is played by John Forsythe, whose character seems bound and determined to do the stupidest possible thing in every situation. Fun side note: His campaign manager is played by Richard "Oscar Goldman" Anderson.  Very poorly-written and implausible.

The Host Segments:  Mike preps Crow for a commando raid on Deep 13. Dr. F catches him almost immediately.  Mike gives Crow and Servo "bionic man" noises. The Kitten With a Whip (Kevin Murphy) visits the SOL.  Mike hazes himself by dressing up as Marie Antoinette, much to the Bots' horrified consternation.  Mike and the Bots have a piñata shaped like Dr. F.  Dr. F uses Frank as a piñata.

Rating: So-so. Not a favorite.  In an introduction recorded for the DVD, Mike Nelson says that they had strong reservations that this film wasn't a good fit for them, and I think this shows up a bit in the finished product.

MST3K and PEANUTS:

Back in the ‘90s there was some talk of an MST3K comic book that would poke fun at old, public domain comic books. I never saw one, so I figured they couldn’t figure out the logistics of how that would work, exactly. But recently I was reading through on of the Peanuts collections (the one collecting strips from 1995-1996, I think), and saw that Laff Trax or The Film Crew had done that very thing with five or six sample dailies in the introduction.

Perhaps the daily strip format lends itself more to this kind of spoof than traditional comic books, but basically the strips were presented as normal, but with an additional caption under each panel which would be the heckler’s commentary. I wish they’d do a whole book like that.

Show 801: "Revenge of the Creature", first broadcast 2/1/1997

The Film: From 1955, this is the first sequel to "Creature form the Black Lagoon". It features John Agar and Lori Nelson, and first, brief film appearance of Clint Eastwood. It's actually not that bad of a film, worth a look on its own merits.

The Host Segments:  Mike, Tom and Gypsy are pulled back to the SOL. Crow is already there. He does not recognize Mike, and treats him like a stranger. This is Bill corbett's debut as Crow. I'd forgotten how harsh he was in these early stories. They soon find that they are orbiting the Earth in the year 2525, and apes rule the world. They contact Professor Bobo (Kevin Murphy) and  Doctor Peanut (Mike Nelson).  I'd forgotten how much more refined Bobo was in his early appearances.  They are shown a movie by order of the mysterious Law-Giver.  Mike meets the Nanites, specifically Ned (Paul Chaplin) and Wade (Kevin Murphy). An  alien calls, looking for Tom. Crow makes Mike an espresso.  The Bots discover that almost all of Mike's descendants married apes.  The Law-Giver arrives - it's Mrs. Forrester!  She explains that she eventually killed the reborn Clayton, and has sworn revenge on Mike for his death.

Favorite Lines:

  • "Egrets, I've had a few..."
  • "Yeah, Fa loves Pa, give me a damn fish."

Rating: Pretty good, especially considering this was their first show for the Sci-Fi Channel, and they were still finding their feet a bit.  The film and host segments were good, and the riffing was good, too, I'm especially fond of the "tributary to the Upper Amazon" bit.

(from "Manhunter and Thor", Police Comics #17, via Comic Book Plus)

This is the film where the vampire is seen in the mirror looking her true centuries old age. I always thought that made more sense than it picking up nothing because vampires have no souls. According to that logic, shoes, watches, and peanut butter all have souls. Santo was in a lot of movies but the only other one I ever saw dubbed was Samson in the Wax Museum. As I remember it the commissioner, or whoever it was he met at the police station, had a much more impressive voice than the star.

Show 411: "The Magic Sword", first broadcast 8/29/1992

The Film: A Bert I. Gordon film from 1962, this features Basil Rathbone, Estelle Winwood and Gary Lockwood in the story of young George, who slays a dragon, defeats an evil wizard and wins the heart of a princess.  Not that bad of a picture, actually.  I could imagine watching a non-MSTed version.

The Host Segments:  Joel pretends to be a caricature artist.  Joel and the Bots invent Big Gulp Berets. The Mads invent Designer Biohazard Throw Pillows.  Joel and the Bots do an ad for Basil Rathbones dog biscuits. Later, they do a pageant about life in the Middle Ages. Servo takes it too seriously.  Crow sings of his love for Estelle Winwood. The Bots come up with words you shouldn't say on TV. Frank is unwell.

Rating: Another pretty good episode. Fun film and reasonably good host segments.

"I could imagine watching a non-MSTed version."

I have a non-MST version on VHS. I have quite a few (15 or so) such tapes I picked up on the cheap (some used on MST3K, others not), some still in their shrink wrap.

The best of the MST3Ks (I think) are of the movies which have some merit (such as this one, Teenagers from Outer Space or Revenge of the Creature, for example).
