OK, I'll be handling this one a little differently than some of the other TV series I've re-watched. I don't own every episode of this, and what I do own isn't in broadcast order, so I'll be watching them as I find them, and updating this initial post as to where they sit in the show's history.

Show 111: "Moon Zero Two", first broadcast 1/20/1990

The Film:  This 1969 Hammer film is set in the year 2021 tells the story of intrigue in the Lunar mining community. (We'd better get on the stick if we;re going to have a Lunar mining community in the next five years. Apparently, Pan Am will be operating the Lunar Express.)  This is very much British 60's sci-fi, with its animated opening titles, "hip" soundtrack and women wearing oddly-colored wigs and costumes no actual woman would ever wear. The only actors I recognize are a young "Catherina von Schell" and Bernard Bresslaw.   The picture looks OK, but it's not very well written. Worlds apart from the coeval 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The Host Segments: Joel introduces the show, then invents the food teleporter.  The Mads invent celebrity toothpaste.  Joel and the Bots do their tribute to the space program.Later, they imagine the games of the future. Crow and Servo discuss the women in the movie. At the end, they discuss the film.

Odd Note: The Bots make a Donald Trump joke in this. Little did they know.

Rating:  Back when Comedy Central re-ran the show every weeknight, the first season episode were never in the rotation. I read later that the folks who ran the show wouldn't let them be re-run because they thought the first season episodes weren't very good.   Watching this, I can say that there is a qualitative difference in the production values of this episode and even the second season episodes. They must've done a complete refurbish between during the hiatus.  The opening titles and the sets are fairly amateurish-looking.  Also, I can't say as I've ever warmed to Josh Weinstein's work as Doctor Erhardt or the voice of Tom Servo.  Replacing him with Frank Conniff and Kevin Murphy made for a vast improvement, in  my opinion.  I also notice that Beaulieu does Crow's voice differently - somewhat higher-pitched. That said, the episode itself is OK, but not amazing.

Show 422: "The Day The Earth Froze", first broadcast 1/16/1993

The Short: Here Comes the Circus (1946) seems to be a sort of promotional piece for the fun to be had at the circus, but has kind of the opposite effect. The clowns are creepy, and watching the animal trainer makes me root for the lions and tigers to turn on their trainers. The Bots go dark on this, but it's hard to blame them.

The Film:  The Day The Earth Froze is a 1959 Soviet-Finnish co-production that features characters from the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala (worth a read if you get the chance).  In it, the heroic Lemminkäinen battles a witch for control of the Sampo, a sort of magical replicator.  I remember seeing this on TV when I was little, and being disappointed that it wasn't a counterpart to The Day The Earth Caught Fire.  It's OK for what it is, full of Finnocentric weirdness.

The Host Segments:  Joel tries to get the Bots to sit still for a good family photo.  Joel and the Bots invent Snaction - action  snack foods.  Dr. F has invented Unhappy Meals.  Tom and Crow plan their clown act.  Joel and the Bots debate what a sampo is.  Gypsy performs her one-woman show, "Gypsy Rose Me". Crow and Servo are bags of wind.

Favorite Line: "James at 92"

Rating:  The film is OK, good Northeastern European wackiness. The short is amusing, as the shorts usually are.  The host segments are amusing.

I half remember seeing that film when I was young, I think it's still an ok film but the guys ribbing it was still fun.  I'm not sure they are at their best with really good films or really bad films.

I think it can vary.

Show 802: "The Leech Woman", first broadcast 2/8/1997

The Film:  This picture is from 1960. In it, an older woman travels to Hollywood Africa where she learns that she can rejuventate herself by drinking the juice of men's pineal glands. It's a fairly unwatchable mess- I can't imagine watching a non-MSTed version of this.

The Host Segments:  The SOL is infested with prairie dogs.  Crow still doesn't remember Mike. (This was a running plotline through the earliest Sc-Fi Channel episodes.)  The apes begin reverting to type. The Nanites are on strike.  Pearl gives laws to the apes. Servo has some suggestions. Crow and Servo attempt to decapitate Mike in order to gain access to his pineal gland.  Servo wants to yell "Jeeeed!" The apes return to civilized behavior.  Servo yells "Jeeeeeeeeeeeeed!" over the entire closing credits.  (Murphy must have a cast-iron larynx.)

Rating: A so-so episode. I feel like they were still finding their feet again in these early Sci-Fi episodes.

Show 909: "Gorgo", first broadcast 7/18/1998

The Film: This is from 1960. It features Bill Travers and William Sylvester. It's a British attempt at a kaiju eiga.  It's actually not that bad. It's actually a fairly good film. Gorgo is fairly well-realized.

The Host Segments:  A bird has built a nest on top of Crow's head. Bobo bets Observer at arm-wrestling. Pearl is in LA with Leonard Maltin, who is pitching the latest edition of his film review book. Mike, Crow and Servo perform "Waiting for Gorgo". Mike has the William Sylvester version of Trivial Pursuit. Tom and Crow are unenthusiastic.   The Nanites have made a circus. Mike accidentally crushes it.  Mike helps Crow and Servo find women in the picture.   Pearl and Leonard decide to find the worst movie ever.

Rating:  A good episode.  I've always liked this movie, and the riffs and host segments are fun as well.

Show 512: "Mitchell", first broadcast 10/23/1993

The Film:  This is from 1975. It feels like a pilot for a TV cop show that never got picked up. It features Joe Don Baker, Martin Balsam, John Saxon, Linda Evans and Merlin Olsen.  Despite all this star power, it's not particularly enjoyable. Baker is especially unappealing in this, and the cast really dump on him.

The Host Segments:  Joel has built a replica of Monticello out of toothpicks for the Bots to destroy.  The Mads are being audited by the Fraternal Order of Mad Science, and don't have time to do an invention.  They've hired a temp named Mike to help them out. Joel invents the Daktari Stool.  Joel and the Bots engage in an Outward Bound experience.  Gypsy overhears the Mads plotting to kill Mike, and thinks they mean to kill Joel.  She thinks about how to get Joel back to Earth, and then enlists Mike's help. Gypsy launches Joel back to Earth, and he makes his farewells. Appalled, the Mads consider Mike as his replacement.

Rating: I hadn't been watching the show that when I first saw this, so Joel's departure didn't mean as much to me at the time.  The episode itself is so-so. the movie ins't that good, and the riffing is OK, but not great. The host segments are OK.

I just watched this! It was an interesting take on the Godzilla theme though with the little kid, Gamera almost sued!

There were some nice digs at the British Empire as well as a definite anti-capitalism vibe. And the lead wasn't a very nice guy!

Apparently this movie made Joe Don Baker an enemy for life against the MST3K gang! Yikes!

To anyone saying Bob Kane had no talent and Batman's success was solely because of Bill Finger, I'd just like to note Finger wrote Track of the Moon Beast.

I've heard that. but I've also heard from other sources that that feud was greatly exaggerated.

Because of the host switcheroo, I’ve watched Mitchell more often than the quality of the episode warrants.

I have Gorgo (non-MST3K) on DVD, and watch it in conjunction with the HC collection of the Charlton Ditko series published by Yoe books. Ditto with Konga. It’s funny, I didn’t even realize those were movies until someone on this board pointed it out. (There’s a discussion thread somewhere.)
