A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

  • My bridge cover to next month: one of about ten variant covers for Superman Unchained #4, this one shows Superman versus a tornado, art (both pencils and inks) by José Luis García-López.

  • Here's a natural threat, a #4, AND a Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez cover as my bridge cover!

  • Unfortunately I don't have a transistion cover that hasn't already been posted, BUT—considering this Saturday is May the Fourth, which is also Star Wars Day... (image courtesy of the Grand Comics Database.)

  • Aquaman #4 is my bridge cover between April and May. It's a #4 cover, but it has 5 figures on the cover. That's my plan for May.

    • He could have used that shark repellent that he had in the 1966 movie. The "Venom" story introduced the strength-enhancing drug that later was used by Bane.

    • Denny O'Neil admitted that he had previously used the "Venom" story idea twice before, in Richard Dragon, Kung Fu Fighter and in (if I remember correctly, which I am not sure I do) Detective Comics.

  • Inked by Dick Giordano. The giveaway is the Daily Star instead of the Daily Planet.

  • Here's one of the earliest covers by José Luis García-López, cover-dated March 1968.  Even though the couple are, presumably, Just Married, I'm still surprised that the Comics Code Authority approved a story with this title!

    • I don't think even the CCA had a problem with married people kissing or hearing each other's snores.
