A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

Discussion and voting on future monthly themes takes place on the "Nominations, Themes and Statistics for A Cover A Day" thread.  Click here to view the thread.

  • I'll groove more cookie spaghetti later! Here's another actual snowman, though of the menacing sort that has cropped up a few times this month:

  • I found a comic book with a snowman on the cover! My work here is done.

Every once in a while, JD, I feel the need to let you know that someone out here gets your more obscure references. What a shame!

I get the "helpless as a kitten in a tree" one, too, although that's less obscure.

    • It's appreciated! Given the average age and rarified interests of this board, I expect that any number of people would get these references (and certainly, as you note, "helpless as a kitten on a tree" is not obscure).

  • Have we had Olaf yet? If so, I'll let it go!

  • Missing yesterday couldn't be helped and despite the fact I was planning a double feature for today, Phillip already beat me to posting an Olaf. Therefore, here are two from elsewhere in the Disney Universe, courtesy of the Grand Comics Database.

  • Sorry to interrupt the wonderful flow of snowman covers, but today is the birthday of the amazing comic artist Matt Baker, who was born on 10 December 1921. He had a very interesting, if sadly short life (he died aged just 37) and was utterly brilliant at drawing the female form. He was the only black man working in an exclusive white male environment and was a workaholic.  Interesting article about him here https://greatblackheroes.com/entertainment/matt-baker/?utm_content=...

Normal service will be resumed from me tomorrow.

  • Bulletman #12 went on sale on Jan 13, 1943. The next issue was #14, which went on sale on Mar 29, 1946, two years later. There never was a #13!
