Some of you have seen the post on facebook, but I want to share this with the whole darn tootin' Cave.

A little background: my girlfriend Tracy and I have known each other for seven years, and living together for six years (My mother would have said "living in sin" but does anyone even say that anymore? :) ).  I decided many months ago that this would be the year to give her an engagement ring.  But I wanted it to be a surprise.  Her daughter Mysti helped me pick out the ring and she was sworn to secrecy.  Beyond that, I told a few family members and a handful of close friends.

You see, when I met Tracy, she had come out of a bad marriage the year before.  When we started to get serious, she made it clear she didn't want to get married again.  Living together as common law, not a problem, but she didn't want to go through *that* again.  Understandable, and I was cool with it.  We've been living together since late 2006, and it's worked out pretty great.

Fast forward to a year ago, a good friend of ours and his girlfriend got engaged.  Since then, the marriage hints from Tracy came every so often, and usually in a humourous fashion .... but I figured if she had put up with me for this long, we were ready to take the next step.  I got the okay from Mysti (she was over the moon for her Mom, which was nice; she's a teenager and you just never know), and the ring was chosen.

Tracy thought she was getting a new puppy for Christmas, which will turn out to be a Valentines present.  She had no idea she was getting a ring.  Ah, but what to hide it in?  I thought about the box within a box within a box thing, but I thought it's a little corny, and I knew Tracy would feel that way too.  Plus, once you open it, she would know that's what it was, but still have to open up six boxes.

Then it hit me one day: the ring, inside its own little box, inside my Spider-Man collectible lunchbox - it has Ditko art all over it.  Open the lunchbox, and voila!

So this morning, when Tracy was handed the present, said "It's a lunchbox" and gave me a funny look.  She told me later she thought it was a Betty Boop lunchbox (her favorite character) to match the Spidey lunchbox.  She opened it up and her face said "Oh, its a matching Spidey lunchbox for me - WTH?"

I said, "Now hold on, there's something special about this lunchbox, let me show you", and I started to open it, but then I got down on one knee ..... a proposal was made, and accepted!

Like they say in the storybooks: Once upon a time, and they lived happily ever after.
