Andre Braugher Remembered By Friends & Castmates: Emmy-Winning Actor Dead At 61 – Deadline
As the showbiz community digests the terrible news of Andre Braugher death at 61, reactions from friends, former castmates and others are hitting soc…
  • I saw this on my phone before I saw your post, and I followed all your links.

He blew us away on Homicide, which we were watching before the crossover(s) with Law & Order also had us watching that. I had forgotten that he was in Glory because his performance was relatiely low key.

    He was absolutely terrific.

  • I remember watching the debut episode of Homicide when it first aired. I don't think I was blown away by him immediately; at first glance, he was one part of dizzying cast in a tour-de-force show.  But by the time "Three Men and Adena" rolled around later in the season, it was clear that even among a cast that included Melissa Leo, Ned Beatty, and Yaphet Kotto, he was a singular talent -- a man with devastating charisma and piercing intellect.

I didn't follow him into every show he was on, but when he had a chance to really create a character -- like he did in Thief, in Men of a Certain Age, and, in what looked to be the start of an amazing second act, in Brooklyn Nine Nine -- there was no one better.

  • I met Andre Braugher once many years ago; his wife was performing in a play in Baltimore, and he and his two sons (I gather he had a third one later; like I said, this was many years ago) were waiting for her in the theater lobby afterward.

He was genial, even after I mispronounced his last name. Yz4R2Nv.gif

  • Andre Braugher won his first Emmy award for Homicide: Life on the Street after he was considering leaving the show because it was getting too routine for him and wasn't a challenge any more. So the writers gave him one: Detective Pembleton was doing one of his trademark intense interrogations and had a stroke. The way that episode ended -- with an image of Pembleton in a coffin, symbolizing his mind was trapped in his body -- chills me to this day.

The rest of the season followed his recovery, although they wrapped that storyline kind of early, as the viewers got tired of how long it was taking for Pembleton to be his old self. I remember one bit when he was outside of his home talking to his doctor about the medicines he was taking and their side effects, one being impotence, and wanted to stop taking them. He told the doctor his anniversary was coming up and "I want to make love to my wife." The doctor sighed, and thought for a long time, and told him that it might be possible for him to forget to take his medicine for a day and he might be okay for those 24 hours ... but if he wanted to be around to celebrate his next anniversary, he better take it on that 25th hour.

Braugher won his second Emmy for a show called Thief, about a family man whose real job was being a high-end burglar. It was canceled after six episodes, but Fox retroactively called it a miniseries.

  • I've said many times including on this board that Detective Pembleton is one of my favorite characters in all media. There was a point I had a lot of my friends watching Homicide with me on Friday nights before we would go out to a bar.

I also really enjoyed him in Brooklyn Nine-Nne. I had actually forgotten he was in Glory, until I rewatched it 2-3 months ago. I just thought he was a really great actor.

No less than 3 of my friends texting me last night about his death. Just really sucks.
