Does anybody have any favorite Scott Lang or Eric O'Grady Ant-Man stories?

I'd like to be able to recommend some to newspaper readers in my column. I've read them all, but darned if I any stuck with me.

Well, in a good way. I loathed the "Black Ant" story in Secret Avengers, where the Assemblers battled "Father" and his AI army. I sorta liked the cheeky irreverence of Irredeemable Ant-Man, but given how O'Grady turned out, is that really recommendable?

I also vaguely recall Scott Lang giving his life for Cassie, but I don't remember the circumstances, or where it happened. Nothing else about Lang bubbles up as memorable. But I have essentially erased the '90s from my mental hard drive, so maybe there was something there. Didn't he die in "Avengers Dis-Assembled" too, or was that Henry Pym?

I like Nadia Van Dyne, so I think Unstoppable Wasp is recommendable.

Are Ant-Man (2015) #1-5 and Astonishing Ant-Man (2015) any good? How about the three-issue Ant-Man and Wasp (2010)? I haven't read those, but I could get them in reprint form.

As to pre-Lang favorites, that's a tough one, too, given how tepid the Ant-Man/Giant-Man stories have always been. Off the top of my head, my favorites are probably:

* "On the Trail of Spider-Man!" from Tales to Astonish #57.

* Pym's "Fantastic Voyage" through Vision in Avengers #93.

* "The Birth of Giant-Man" from Tales to Astonish #49, just because it's historic.

* "The Man in the Ant Hill" in Tales to Astonish #27, again for historic reasons.

* "Enter: The Hulk" from Tales to Astonish #59.

You know the Geoff Johns story in Avengers where Pym shrinks down and goes into Jan's vagina and brings her to orgasm? Yeah, I'm not going to be recommending that one.

  • I wrote about Ant-Man #1 (2015) and while it wasn't bad, it continued Scott Lang's pattern of questionable choices!

There's Avengers #223 with Scott teaming with Hawkeye!

As for Hank Pym as Ant-Man, Avengers #161 had him almost defeat the entire team!

My favorite Pym-as-Yellowjacket stories are Avengers #139 (versus Whirlwind), Giant-Size Defenders #4 (versus Egghead and the Squadron Sinister) and Defenders #21-25 where he shined away from the Avengers!

  • I'm with Phillip.

Best Ant-Man ever was Avengers #161 and I also thought he worked better in Defenders than he was allowed to in the Avengers.

I read all the Scott Lang Ant-Man stuff around the Secret Wars stuff and found myself enjoying them - just the right amount of humour but they were kind of an ensemble  rather than a wholly solo series and ended too soon.

    I miss Pym as Goliath.

  • Who's Eric O'Grady?

  • The Irredeemable Ant-Man or Ant-Man III. Never read any of his solo stories. Not a nice guy.

  • The main problem with discussing Scott Lang is, for the majority of his existence, that he was never the star of his own series. Nor was he that important in others. I have the Ant-Man: Scott Lang trade from 2015 and after his two issue run in Marvel Premiere, the rest of the book is stories from Iron Man, The Avengers, Marvel Team-Up and Marvel Two-In-One.

Even when he joined the Fantastic Four, did anyone see him as a good choice to replace Reed Richards?

Despite his connection to the Avengers, he didn't join until the 00s and was deemed expendable.

Still a shock that the movie featured Scott as the hero and not Pym.

  • But I hear his sister Rosie was very sweet.

  • ...And the DAUGHTER of Rosie O'Grady! A regular, old-fashioned, goil. She isn't crazy for diamond rings...
  • Aunt-Man and the WASP?

  • Apparently, Christos Gage didn't get the memo that Hank Pym was supposed to be a wife-beater and a loser when he wrote him into Avengers Acadamy. For a story of more recent vintage, I recommend this one.

  • Another more "recent" choice, this story by Brian Bendis and Howard Chaykin at least remembers when Hank Pym was a hero. He doesn't come off all that well, but an on-the-run Captain America treats him with respect.
