  • I think that everyone:

    • should remain calm
    • remember Argo, Dogma, Good Will Hunting and his other great films
    • have faith that everyone involved WANTS Superman/Batman to be awesome
    • should realize that there's no actor that we'll all agree on 100%
    • should acknowledge that Daredevil wasn't that bad
    • should, most of all, understand that the decision has already been made!
  • I think he'll be pretty good, actually. I expect he'll do just fine as Bruce Wayne. And I'm really glad they went with a name instead of another relative unknown.

I haven't seen Daredevil, but it's silly to pretend the problems with that movie came down entirely on Affleck.

  • I'd disagree. Daredevil was that bad. ... But really I am not the least bit concerned.

Even if he does a horrible job, the franchise will endure. That much I am sure of.

  • If the franchise survived Batman & Robin, it'll survive anything!

  • Newsarama's posted a pertinent walk down memory lane:

  • Heath Ledger is a good reminder. As is Michael Keaton way back when, "Mr. Mom as Batman! Terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I thought X-Men 3 was terrible, and it wasn't because Frasier Crane was the Beast. Bad superheroes movies have never been ruined for me by the actors in it.

  • I guess I have to re-watch Daredevil. I don't remember thinking it was bad. In addition to the movies Philip cited, I would call your attention to Hollywoodland, in which Affleck completely disappeared into the role of George Reeves. He can do it!

As for Batman and Robin, they had actors that could have pulled off the hero and villain roles. It was the fault of the script and the director. I knew we were in trouble when the Duo "just happened" to have ice skates in their boots!

See, that's a detail that would ordinarily make me *love* the film. The fact that it doesn't please the "silly Batman" fan in me any more than the "gritty Batman" fan is all on the director, I think, for setting such a horribly garbled tone.

  • I didn't think Daredevil was poor because of his performance.  Insofar as using a name actor, I'm not thinking of anyone better.  Of course, I'd be more than happy to see an unknown as well.

I don't think Batman and Robin was a bad movie because of the actors either.  It was a bad movie because they couldn't decide whether it was a farce or a serious movie, and it suffered from teetering that line.

  • Oh, I think Batman and Robin director Joel Schumacher knew exactly what he was wanted to direct: La Cage aux Folles. So he turned B&R into a gay farce. But none of us know what Schumacher really was thinking, so it's up to individual reactions, and that's mine.

Anyway, Affleck has shown he can be serious, and I liked Daredevil fine (until the climactic fight with Bullseye). And I surely do remember the cries of outrage over Michael Keaton. I recommended everyone calm down then, and I recommend the same thing now.
