DC announced that Birds of Prey is coming back, with Gail Simone as the writer and Ed Benes as the penciler. The team will include Oracle, Black Canary, Huntress and Lady Blackhawk. There will also be two new members who are blacked out in the released image, though one of them is obviously Dove (from Ed Benes' recent stint on Blackest Night: Titans).

Over at an interview with Comics Alliance, Gail said: "Yes, he draws phenomenally hot women (and I think his guys are even hotter -- no one ever quite got Savant and Creote the way Ed did), but he also does lovely, subtle acting, and tremendous facial expressions and body language." [emphasis mine]
I dunno -- I just don't see that. I think it was Benes's art that took the air out of Brad Meltzer's balloon for me. In Identity Crisis, Rags Morales's characters could act. They had personality. But Benes's JLA just stood around (well, sometimes sat around) woodenly. I remember a scene between Red Arrow and Hawkgirl where I honestly didn't know what sort of emotions they were feeling. It was simply dead on the page.
I saw the headline, and pumped my fist in the air. It would have been a must-buy for me. But with Benes?
I've always felt that Benes has the ability to be one of the great artists, but that he indulges himself too much in terms of cheesecake. Here's hoping he can restrain himeself.
Yeah...pairing Simone again with Benes is a downer for me...I was about to be happy about it, till Chris got to that part...and then I was all "really? again?" sigh.

They just don't get it, do they?

Check out the Secret Headquarters (my store) website! It's a pretty lame website, but I did it myself, so tough noogies
Listen to WOXY.com, it's the future of rock-n-roll!
Ed Benes on art...meh (putting it mildly).
There, Doc, does that help? :D
I love Gail's writing -- but Benes... oh, hell.
