I read a bunch of stuff last night, but the three comics I enjoyed the most were Batgirl, New Avengers, and Archie.

Batgirl - I've been reading good things about this new series on the net for awhile, especially regarding Bryan Miller's use of Wendy after she and Marvin were pretty much destroyed in the Teen Titans series.  This is Oracle's other team.  She, Steph Brown, and Wendy (daughter of the Calculator) are taking care of the baddies that the Birds of Prey and the Batman family aren't.  Given all of these teams, plus Batwoman, Gotham should be pretty well protected.  Stephanie is a fun character with a lot of fun quips...kind of a female Peter Parker...and a running joke is how both she and Babs have a bad habit of speaking their thoughts out loud.  Check it out.

New Avengers - A demon is trying the steal the Eye of Agamotto and is possessing various magic users and Avengers to get it.  Bendis is having a great time with Luke Cage's group of heroes and the Spidey-Logan team is comedy gold.

Archie (part 2 of Man from R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E.) - Archie continues to help his cousin, a secret agent with P.O.P. with a Riverdale headquarters under the Binder's Used Books store, stop his old nemesis, Mad Doctor Doom, from his Little Archie days.  MDD has created a gas/liquid to turn people into living zombies.  One of the best bits is an evil spy girl who uses quck-change to look like anyone.  She takes the place of cafeteria worker Miss Beazley but her disguise is not quite perfect.  Archie recognizes the spy because her figure ain't Miss Beazley's.  All that girl watching comes in handy sometimes.

  • I'd been reading the new Batgirl series when it started, and I liked the characterizations okay, but there didn't seem to be a lot of there there, so I dropped it. (Also, the art didn't always communicate the story very clearly.) It sounds like it might be starting to step up a notch in at least the thereness....I may have to keep that book in mind for a reconsideration if/when finances allow again.
  • The issue I have with Batgirl is DC's commitment to the character. Stephanie Brown has had two other identities and there has been three previous Batgirls. Can she remain Batgirl long-term or will Cassandra Cain show up and she becomes Spoiler again?
  • I'm hoping it stays Steph and this recent four-parter "Batgirl Rising" seemed to solidify this new trio of hero women. Steph and Dr. Tompkins were ill used a few years ago...thank Rao for New Earth and a new start for these characters.
  • All I've read so far from this week has been Legion of Superheroes #3. It's thoroughly entertaining stuff -- Earth-Man goes on his first mission as a GL, while other Legionnaires confront Saturn Queen in the debris of the destroyed Titan, and the Ranzz family continues looking for their missing kids. What's becoming more and more apparent with each issue is that Levitz is pacing this comic differently than just about anything else out there.. except his old Legion back-issues. There's a lot going on in each issue, and Levitz looks to be setting plans in motion for a good long run.
  • I debated getting Archie over Jughead #200, and Jughead lost (but I'd still recommend it; I was just over budget for this week). I loved the shout-out to Otto Binder ("Binder's Used Books store," indeed) and I really loved how the spy girl couldn't let go of her vanity -- and the results therefrom. (Poor Reggie!)

Also, the thought never occurred to me before this story, but: Could Miss Beazley be related to Popeye? The resemblance is striking ...
  • I liked Jughead 200 -- that's from a few months ago, right? Where he sells his soul to forget his marriage, or something like that?
  • Prince of Power #3- More screwball goodness with Cho and Thor as they search the means to locate Hercules. I don't want to give too much away right now, but I will say this:

    LOL Cats and Roofies=Hilarity

Yeah, that one made me laugh out loud.
