TOP 5 PUBLISHERS

MARVEL COMICS

I didn't notice until this week's MARVEL MASTERWORKS: TOMB DRACULA VOL 3 that this series is including Dracula material from Giant-Size Chillers, Giant-Size Dracula and Dracula Lives magazine. What I figured to be a seven- or eight-book series — Tomb of Dracula ran 70 issues, plus annuals — is going to be considerably longer. I'm not complaining, as it puts all that Bronze Age goodness in one place. It's hard to believe now, but the Dracula origin story in Dracula Lives #2 (by Marv Wolfman and Neal Adams) was the first time I'd ever read a Dracula origin story. It had never occurred to me that he needed one.

Spider-Man guest stars in CAPTAIN AMERICA #2.

X-MEN #129 FACSIMILE EDITION reprints the first appearances of Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost.

“Dark Droids” continues in STAR WARS: DARK DROIDS — D-SQUAD #2 (OF 4) and STAR WARS: DOCTOR APHRA #37.

"Fall of X" continues in ALPHA FLIGHT #3 (OF 5), DARK X-MEN #3 (OF 5), JEAN GREY #3 (OF 4), MS. MARVEL: THE NEW MUTANT #3, REALM OF X #3 (OF 4) and UNCANNY AVENGERS #3 (OF 5).

Following Kelly Thompson’s historic run, writer Alyssa Wong and Marvel’s Stormbreaker artist Jan Bazaldua are taking the reins and catapulting Carol Danvers into her explosive next era! October’s CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 will be a parade of exciting debuts as Carol sports an all-new costume courtesy of artist Jen Bartel, gains an unlikely partner in a street thief named Yuna, and becomes the target of a dangerously fresh new archenemy known as the Omen! The pulse-pounding first issue kicks off a saga packed with cosmic repercussions as a reality-devouring entity known as the Undone realizes that Captain Marvel is the only hero powerful enough to stop it from annihilating Earth. In the opening arc, witness the Undone’s bold plan to take Carol off the board and how it unleashes chaos for Captain Marvel, Yuna, and the entire Marvel Universe!

Fans looking forward to CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 will have an array of dazzling covers to choose from. Check out all nine now, including newly revealed pieces from superstars like Jen Bartel, Joshua “Sway” Swaby, John Tyler Christopher, and more!

"I'm so excited to be writing Captain Marvel!” Wong said. “Carol is such an iconic character with a rich history, and I can't wait to add to her story. It's an honor to work with Jan and I hope everyone enjoys what we've got coming!"

"Captain Marvel is one of my favorite female characters, that's why I'm very excited to draw her,” Bazaldua added. “I have always seen her as a very self-confident woman with nothing she cannot face, and not just because she has super-powers, but because she has inner strength. That’s what I really enjoy about her and why I really appreciate this opportunity!"

The highly-anticipated series will introduce fans to an exciting new cast of characters, some of which readers have already met this summer in special bonus pages in select titles. From powerful mystics to daring scientists to chaos bringers, these characters exist outside the fight between good and evil and devote their time to upholding the very building blocks of creation. They may be new to readers but they’ve been scheming and clashing with each other for eons and are privy to startling truths your favorite heroes and villains wish they knew!  Over the next week, some of the major players of G.O.D.S. will be spotlighted in special teasers and concept art. First up is Wyn, Avatar of THE-POWERS-THAT-BE! See him in new concept art and teaser images and visit Marvel.com to learn more of his secrets!

  • No surprise we're getting a new Captain Marvel series, with The Marvels on the way.
  • Looking at cover #3 below, why would Captain Marvel ever need a sword?

HALLOWS’ EVE: THE BIG NIGHT #1

It’s Oct. 31 at E.S.U. so you know what that means: A Halloween party won’t go as planned and a bunch of powerless kids will be in a lot of trouble! Hallows’ Eve was once powerless and was once a victim. Now she’s anything but. Her magical masks give her the ability to help — but Eve isn’t a hero, is she?

  • Really not clear on who this character is, as I've never read a story with her in it. Apparently she can wear masks and ... ape super-powers? Turn physically into other people, like in Game of Thrones? She's from Spider-Man comics and dresses like a Goblin, but isn't one. Maybe Goblin adjacent?

AN ALL-NEW ERA OF MARVEL ZOMBIES!

Marvel’s hit BLACK, WHITE & BLOOD series delivers the most violent and savage adventures of pop culture’s deadliest icons including Wolverine, Carnage, Moon Knight and even the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader! The best-selling line continues this October with the installment fans have demanded. Prepare yourself for unimaginable horror as MARVEL ZOMBIES gets the BLACK, WHITE & BLOOD treatment in a new four-issue series!

Just in time for Halloween season, MARVEL ZOMBIES: BLACK, WHITE & BLOOD will satisfy fan’s cravings for terror with shocking tales from a host of all-star writers and artists! This action-packed, utterly original, gloriously gory anthology series is set in a universe where the Avengers, the X-Men, Spider-Man and many more Marvel heroes and villains are beset by ever-growing zombie hordes and transformed into flesh-eating monstrosities. In a brutal, bloodstained world, can hope survive? Or will creeping, gnawing, shambling horror win out at last …?

Here’s a taste of what’s in store in MARVEL ZOMBIES: BLACK, WHITE & BLOOD #1:

  • Legendary writer Garth Ennis returns to the Marvel Universe alongside artist Rachael Stott to reveal the tragic fate of Matt Murdock. As a zombie, Daredevil has committed unspeakable sins, and now it’s time for an old accomplice to finally put him out his misery.
  • Behold one of Spider-Man’s darkest days in a story by writer Alex Segura and artist Javi Fernández. He’s saved the world time and time again with a quip and a thwip, but when he’s forced to fight fiendish versions of his loved ones, will Peter Parker do the unthinkable and give up?!
  • Writer Ashley Allen makes her Marvel Comics debut and teams up with artist Justin Mason for a jaw-dropping Moon Knight tale. Discover how Khonshu, god of the moon and vengeance, intervenes during apocalyptic times to protect his loyal avatar, Marc Spector!

The undead plague starts here … and you know it won’t stop until everyone’s in its clutches!

  • The original Marvel Zombies was shocking to me and made me laugh uncomfortably. But shock value has a limited shelf life. I'm kinda done with the concept now.
  • Plus, I never accepted that the zombie virus would affect Wolverine (who is immune to vampire bites) and other healing-factor characters like Deadpool and Hulk. And how could zombies overwhelm cosmic characters like Silver Surfer and Galactus, except by writer's fiat? The longer the original series went, the more my suspension of disbelief — and interest — evaporated.
  • If you're not done with the concept, MARVEL ZOMNIBUS RETURNS HC is also available this week as well.

DC COMICS

"Gotham War" continues in BATMAN/CATWOMAN: GOTHAM WAR — RED HOOD #2 (OF 2) and DETECTIVE COMICS #1075.

ALL-AMERICAN COMICS #16 FACSIMILE reprints the first appearance of Alan Scott, the first Green Lantern.

IZOMBIE THE COMPLETE SERIES OMNIBUS HC is far different than what appeared on TV.

At last, it's collected all in one place: NICE HOUSE ON THE LAKE DELUXE EDITION HC.

ALAN SCOTT: THE GREEN LANTERN #1 (OF 6)

12258830864?profile=RESIZE_400xStory: Tim Sheridan | Art: Cian Tormey | Cover: David Talaski | Variants: John K. Snyder III, Nick Robles, David Talaski ($5.99) | $3.99/$4.99 (card stock)

Alan Scott’s early days as the Green Lantern are seen in a new light! The Green Lantern is the most powerful member of the JSA, beloved by all of America, but his personal life is a well-kept secret. This is a story about love, about fear, and most of all about courage to stand up to that fear. Alan Scott’s past is the key to his future when the Red Lantern appears, ready to strike down the mighty Green Lantern!

  • Alan Scott had one of the weirdest costumes in the Golden Age, and that's saying something. A poofy red pirate shirt, green leggings, red boots with superfluous yellow straps, a purple cape with a green lining, a yellow-and-green logo, a stand-up collar with neck clasp ... it looked like it was designed by someone who was both color-blind and fashion-challenged. (And where do you even find half that stuff in 1940?) But somehow it worked. Or maybe I've just gotten used to it.
  • The focus of this series, as seen in the preview below, seems to be about Scott living as a closeted gay man in the '40s and '50s. Specifically, J. Edgar Hoover (himself a closeted gay man) tries to blackmail Scott into something Hoover wants, which is for GL to have the Justice Society tag along with him on his adventures, at least in front of the cameras. The implication here is that, while Green Lantern was certainly a legit superhero, the JSA was more of a publicity stunt. (If anyone thinks this is a smear of Hoover, it isn't. Blackmail and public relations were practically his M.O. Even Nixon was afraid of Hoover.)
  • I do think the Emerald Gladiator's circumscribed personal life is ripe fodder for exploration, but I'm not crazy about the JSA-is-phony retcon. I'll reserve judgment until I actually read it, but you can't tell me that Green Lantern was the only legitimate superhero on a team that had powerhouses like Wonder Woman, Doctor Fate, Spectre, Flash and Starman. Even Black Canary, Hawkman, Hourman and Wildcat had adventures that are still canon, and/or spawned legacy characters. I'll grant that, arguably, Atom, Mr. Terrific, Sandman and Doctor Mid-Nite could have been more PR than useful on a JSA adventure, or (my preference) acted more behind the scenes in support. But still.

  • Is DC trying to rehabilitate the title of one of the worst Wonder Woman miniseries ever? Good luck!
  • There sure are a lot of Wonder Girls/Women these days.
  • Speaking of which, what's Mary Marvel doing here? They don't have enough Wonder Girls to flesh out the cast? They needed a spot of color? What?
  • And who's Faruka II? Also, who's Faruka I?

DETECTIVE CHIMP CASEBOOK HC

12258835057?profile=RESIZE_180x180Story: John Broome, Various | Art: Carmine Infantino | Cover: Brian Bolland | $29.99

Bruce isn’t the only sleuth who knows how to swing across Gotham! Detective Chimp collects Amazing World of DC Comics #1, DC Comics Presents #35, DC Special #1, Tarzan #231 and #234-235, The Adventures of Rex the Wonder Dog #4, #6-46, and Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe #6!

  • Why didn't anyone tell me this was coming? Sold!
  • For some reason, I just assumed Detective Chimp's '50s appearances would be in Detective Comics. Silly me. He was in Rex the Wonder Dog.
  • I bought all the DC Tarzans when they came out, so I must have read the three issues reprinted here. But darned if I remember Detective Chimp in them.
  • Yes, I know the '50s stories will most likely be predictable and repetitive. They were written for children. But I must have them! I must read them! I must know!

TALES OF THE TEEN TITANS #4 (OF 4)

12258837069?profile=RESIZE_180x18012258836898?profile=RESIZE_180x180Story: Andrew Constant | Art: Brandt & Stein | Cover: Nicola Scott | Variants: Ramon Perez, Jorge Corona, Bruka Jones | 40 pages | $4.99/$5.99 (card stock)

Beast Boy barely survived the events of Dark Crisis, suffering a brutal attack from Deathstroke and losing an eye in the process. With his confidence weakened, he’s been unable to hold the shape of the large and mighty animals that define him as a superhero. But when a scientist with nothing to lose needs Beast Boy’s powers for terrifying ends, Gar will have to face what truly makes him special …and save his own life in the process!

  • I may be an outlier on this, but Beast Boy is my second-least-favorite Titan. (Cyborg is at the bottom.) I usually find his "humor" irritating — he's only as funny as his writers, and not all writers are funny — and turning into a gorilla isn't much of a power in an era where even street criminals have lethal, long-range, automatic firearms. It's a cool visual, but it stopped being a plausibly useful super-power to me sometime in the '70s.
  • That being said, this issue leads into the first Beast Boy-centric crossover, "Beast World."

EDENWOOD #1 (OF 5)

11128042285?profile=RESIZE_710xStory/Art: Tony S. Daniel | Colors: Natália Marques | Covers:Tony S. Daniel, Mahmud A. Asrar, Jorge Molina, Ryan Stegman

Bestselling writer/artist Tony S. Daniel (Nocterra, Batman, Deathstroke) will launch an all-new fantasy series titled Edenwood. This ongoing war-ravaged epic will feature coloring by Natália Marques (Rogue Sun) and debut in September from Image Comics.

An eons-long series of multiverse wars between demons and witches has found earth as its latest battleground. The battle pits Necronema, the demonic land which supplanted the Midwest 20 years ago, against Edenwood, the witchcraft-controlled area of land that protects the rest of the U.S. In the first story arc of this ongoing series readers are introduced to Rion, a young man born during the apocalyptic events of southern Illinois, who is thrust into the role of hero and leader after killing a Gather, a transient demon with the powers to cross any barrier or dimension.

"Edenwood is a series three years in the making, one that I was beginning to craft right before Scott Snyder and I crossed paths in NYC and fate took me in another direction, co-creating Nocterra with one of comics' finest writers,” said Daniel. “This series represents what I love most about comics: excitement, drama, big action, heroes we can relate to and fall in love with, and villains we’ll love to despise. This series is very high concept — yet its characters remain relatable and grounded in reality — all while we have an epic, large-scale battleground of demonic tanks, floating battleships and demon soldiers pitted against witchcraft-infused weaponry and armored soldiers. And away from all of the violent magic and mayhem between Edenwood and Necronema, we have the 'Open Lands' (the rest of the United States) where just as much evil is happening but in a quiet, deliberate way, to further the demon expansion. All of this is the backdrop for our hero, Rion, and his cast of fun and exciting demon hunters. So to say that I’m excited to be working on this new series would be one of the biggest understatements of my career!”

Summoned by the Witch War Council, Rion must assemble an elite team of demon hunters tasked with infiltrating Necronema with a list of targets to annihilate. The men and women he selects happen to all be the most famous and revered demon hunters of all time, dating back to the 1700s. But Rion has his sights set on a young and powerful  witch being held prisoner deep within Necronema. The mission is one of search and destroy … however Rion feels he’s been chosen for more than that.

RADIANT BLACK, RADIANT BLACK #26.5

12259630063?profile=RESIZE_180x18012259629889?profile=RESIZE_180x180Known for pushing the envelope with unique twists, easter eggs, and multimedia tie-ins, the Massive-Verse’s Radiant Black, by Kyle Higgins, Marcelo Costa, Eduardo Ferigato, and Joe Clark, will have fans doing a double-take next month yet again—literally—with the release of two issues: Radiant Black #26 and the Radiant Black #26.5.

One storyline follows Marshall, one storyline puts the spotlight on Nathan, but both issues are a must-buy for readers to get the full experience. There are, after all, two sides to every story.

"The Catalyst War is the most ambitious story that I have ever been a part of,” said Higgins. “This is a story that we’ve been building up to for over two years, an event told across timelines featuring two different art teams telling two different stories each month. Both timelines are integral to the event—the different choices that Marshall and Nathan make and how they impact their respective worlds is at the center of what The Catalyst War is about. And by the end of issue 30.5, you will learn who won the vote and who will be Radiant Black going forward. That is, if either of them survives…”

The “.5” storyline will run through Radiant Black #30 and Radiant Black #30.5 before hitting fans with another jaw-dropping plot twist.

Available at comic book shops on Wednesday, November 22: Radiant Black #27 and Radiant Black #27.5

Available at comic book shops on Wednesday, December 20: Radiant Black #28 and Radiant Black #28.5.

  • Marvel started this half-issue-numbering nonsense a few years ago, and I thought it was dumb then. Just do consecutive numbering, so we know if we're missing an issue or not. Is that so hard?

UNIVERSAL MONSTERS: DRACULA #1 (OF 4)

12150391270?profile=RESIZE_400x12150391073?profile=RESIZE_180x180

Story: James Tynion IV | Art/Cover: Martin Simmonds | Variant: Joshua Middleton | $4.99

THE BIGGEST NAMES IN COMICS RESURRECT THE MOST ICONIC MONSTERS!

James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds re-team to tell a new tale of the monster who started it all and inspired by Universal Pictures’ 1931 film – Dracula! When Dr. John Seward admits a strange new patient into his asylum, the madman tells stories of a demon who has taken residence next door. But as Dr. Seward attempts to apply logic to the impossible ... his surrogate daughter Lucy begins to fall under the spell of the twisted Count Dracula!

Skybound Entertainment, the creator-led, fan-focused multiplatform entertainment company, in partnership with Universal Products & Experiences, has announced Universal Monsters: Dracula, a new four-issue comic book limited series from the best-selling, Eisner Award nominated team of James Tynion IV (W0rldtr33, Something is Killing the Children) and Martin Simmonds (Swan Songs).

This collaboration between Skybound and Universal is the latest milestone in a near-decadelong relationship that encompasses film and video games, and now comic book publishing.

“It’s been an absolute thrill to watch the powerhouse duo behind The Department of Truth breathe new life into this legendary story,” said Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound Entertainment. “Perfect for both new fans and horror afficionados alike — the Universal Monsters are as timeless as ever!”

The comic book miniseries will unfold over four suspenseful issues, with the first installment plunging readers into the eerie world of Dr. John Seward after he admits a seemingly delusional new patient to his asylum. Recounting chilling tales of a demonic entity residing next door, the skeptical doctor attempts to rationalize the unexplainable, but his adopted daughter Lucy mysteriously succumbs to the malevolent influence of the enigmatic Count Dracula.

“A few times in my life I've had the pleasure of writing about one of the great pop culture icons, but there is something singular about Dracula that made this opportunity too good to pass up,” said James Tynion IV. “The challenge in front of Martin and I is to take the bloody heart of the Universal Pictures classic and find a bold new way to bring the character to life. It's been one of the most exciting creative challenges of my life, and I am phenomenally excited for you to see the horrors we have in store for you."

“Dracula has always been a horror favorite of mine, so to get the chance to work on an exciting new interpretation of this character alongside my Department of Truth Co-creator, James Tynion IV, was one I couldn’t pass up,” said Martin Simmonds. “I’m so excited for readers to experience our version of Universal’s classic monster--and I hope you enjoy the direction we take the story.”

In addition to Dracula himself, this series also features some popular characters from the original film, including R.M. Renfield, Mina Seward, Doctor John Seward, Van Helsing and more. Expect fresh twists, chilling encounters and a dive into the dark corners of these timeless villains' narratives.

Universal Monsters: Dracula will be followed by more new limited series spotlighting the iconic monsters from some of the top creators in comics.

Each series will feature variant covers from some of the best artists working in comics today — Joshua Middleton, Francis Manapul, Julian Totino-Tedesco, and Jenny Frison.

  • The Universal monsters were my jam growing up, so I've got fingers crossed that they won't screw 'em up.
  • Here's a PREVIEW.

DARK HORSE COMICS

GIANT ROBOT HELLBOY #1 (OF 3)

12159229886?profile=RESIZE_400x12159230089?profile=RESIZE_180x180Variants: Mike Mignola, Geof Darrow, Arthur Adams | Dark Horse

Legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and superstar artist Duncan Fegredo have collaborated on some of the most iconic Hellboy Universe stories of all time, including Hellboy: Darkness Calls, Hellboy: The Wild Hunt and Hellboy: The Storm and The Fury. Now the acclaimed duo, along with Eisner Award-winning colorist Dave Stewart and longtime Hellboy Universe letterer Clem Robins, are reuniting for a thrilling, three-part miniseries: Giant Robot Hellboy. Inspired by Mignola’s viral-hit pencil drawings from Mike Mignola: The Quarantine Sketchbook, Giant Robot Hellboy features a Mecha-Hellboy and Mega-Monsters. The first issue drops from Dark Horse Comics in October, just in time for Halloween, featuring a variant cover by Mignola and Stewart. Issue 2 will feature a variant cover by award-winning Shaolin Cowboy cartoonist Geof Darrow and Dave Stewart and issue 3 will feature a variant cover by Art Adams.

In this all-new series, Hellboy is kidnapped and hooked up to a massive mecha-Hellboy for a mission on a mysterious, faraway island, but the island might just put up a fight of its own.

Mike Mignola commented, “Giant Robot Hellboy is my very obvious nod to all those Japanese giant monster movies — which I actually have no particular love for. What I DO love is listening to Geof Darrow and Art Adams TALK about those movies — so really, I guess this series was inspired by those guys. I had the idea for this one a long time ago but figured it was too silly to actually do — then the pandemic came along and I started to do all those sketches I would post online. I had never given a serious thought to what a giant robot Hellboy would look like but I knocked out a few sketches and I liked them — and so the thing started to seem like something that could actually be done. But I knew I wasn’t the artist for it and I knew both Arthur and Geof were busy with other things, so the only other artist I thought of was Duncan. I had no idea how Duncan would respond. Too silly? I didn’t know, but I figured I’d pitch it to him and if he said no that would be an end to it. The rest is history.”

“Hellboy awakes to an out-of-body experience and simultaneously has to deal with the usual fallout from mad scientists doing their thing whilst learning to walk again,” said Fegredo. “Come to think of it, that pretty much describes my return to collaborating with Mike Mignola … if you enjoyed my previous forays into grand scale storytelling, whoops, I did it again!”

“It was a thrill to be working with Duncan again,” said Mignola. “The man can draw anything which is very nice for a writer. What is special about Duncan is no matter what you ask him to draw, no matter how difficult or complicated — he will make it MORE complicated (and, of course, more difficult). Everything ends up being so much more than you asked for and Duncan will endlessly curse HIMSELF for overdoing things — and we will all sit back (eventually) and marvel at this amazing thing he has created.”

DRIVE LIKE HELL #1 (OF 4)

12159231280?profile=RESIZE_400x$3.99

The hit creative team of Rich Douek and Alex Cormack (Sea of Sorrows, Breath of Shadows, Road of Bones) along with letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou join up with Dark Horse Comics to present Drive Like Hell, a fast-paced action-adventure that goes full throttle into hellscape horror.

"When I started writing Drive Like Hell, I had one rule,” says author Rich Douek. “If I had an idea that seemed too crazy, too extreme, or too outrageous, I had to go ahead and do it. The result is a story that I hope is as fun to read as it was to write."

Bobby Ray and Dahlia planned the perfect heist, and even stole the perfect getaway car. The big problem?  That car happens to belong to the devil himself, and he wants it back. When the job goes wrong, and Dahlia ends up with a bullet in her head, Bobby Ray finds himself plunged into a supernatural road war with demonic cops, satanic biker gangs, and a whole host of madcap characters, all of whom are after the prize in the car's trunk. If he wants to stay one step ahead of the chaos, he’s gonna have to Drive Like Hell.

“Drawing a car chase, something that depends so much on movement, was something I always wanted to try out in comics.” says artist Alex Cormack. “Growing up watching the Blues Brothers and French Connection, hell I even made an animation in college that was a smash-em-up car chase called Burnout, I’ve always loved car chases. So when Rich mentioned the idea for DRIVE LIKE HELL I was immediately on board. I can’t wait for people to see this!”

Praise for Rich Douek and Alex Cormack’s Sea of Sorrows, Breath of Shadows and Road of Bones:

Sea of Sorrows works like a pot of water on a stove in terms of its scares. It starts off slow with a few bubbles here and there and then before you know it, it's boiling over.” — Horror DNA

“The comic [Breath of Shadows] has all of the setup to really create an intriguing story that might be nightmare inducing for some and have a bit of depth to it as well. An entertaining start that teases what's to come.” — Graphic Policy

“Survival horror, chilling thriller, superbly tense writing, artwork from one of the best comic book illustrators working at the moment hell, you can pick your own reason for buying this book so long as you make sure you get out there and buy it!” — Big Comic Page

DARK SPACES: DUNGEON #1

12150394253?profile=RESIZE_400x12150394266?profile=RESIZE_180x180Art/Cover: Hayden Sherman | Colors: Patricio Delpeche | Letters: Andworld Design | Variant: Dustin Nguyen

When a family moves from the busy city to the relaxing woods of New Hampshire, they're hoping to find a quiet rural life. Instead, the family discovers a terrifying secret: a twisted and terrifying dungeon on their property with a threatening message: "TELL NO ONE."

Now, the father will do anything to protect his family. Upon realizing anyone could be behind the depraved dungeon, fear and paranoia begin to take hold as he tries to discover the truth. Who can he trust? And just how far will he go to protect his family from the horrors of the dungeon?

Scott Snyder and Hayden Sherman, the award-winning creators behind DARK SPACES: WILDFIRE, reunite to present DARK SPACES: DUNGEON, a gripping and emotionally-charged thriller that explores some of humanity's darkest and most captivating fears.

“Getting to explore the worlds of DARK SPACES has been a career highlight without question, and doing so alongside my dear friend and trusted editor Mark Doyle just makes it all the better,” stated Snyder. "The ability to forgo supernatural elements in favor of highlighting the true light and darkness of our reality has been able to take me back to basics in a truly exciting fashion. I'll say this - if DARK SPACES: WILDFIRE was modeled after noir, then DARK SPACES: DUNGEON is a stone-cold thriller. It might be the darkest story I've ever written, while at the same time some of the most fun it's ever been developing a new series."

Snyder added that collaborating with Sherman again has allowed the duo to reach a whole new level. "The work Hayden is doing here has taken our creative partnership to new depths, and I cannot wait for you all to explore those with us."

For Sherman, it's the themes that Snyder is exploring that really makes an impact. "The fears that Scott is examining in DUNGEON are guttural, stomach churning, and (I have to imagine) entirely universal. It's a whole different sort of story than WILDFIRE, while maintaining the grounded thriller core that defines much of DARK SPACES." Snyder's efforts allowed Sherman to experiment with art, striving to pull readers directly into the horrifying story. "This is the perfect opportunity for me to push in a much different visual direction, something that can do proper justice to this new terror! It's such a pure joy to be back creating this follow up alongside Scott and the whole IDW Originals team."

IDW co-publisher Mark Doyle is incredibly thrilled for fans to experience Snyder and Sherman's next DARK SPACES collaboration. "This series is a place where Scott and Hayden really try to push each other creatively in different ways and with DUNGEON they are pushing even further. This is going to be a really dark thriller and readers will be shocked by the turns this story takes!"

DARK SPACES: DUNGEON is the latest installment in the DARK SPACES line of anthology stories. Curated by Snyder himself, DARK SPACES emphasizes character-driven and grounded psychological thrillers that also shine a spotlight on rising stars in the comic book industry.

  • I didn't read the first two stories in the "Dark Spaces" anthology series, so I'm not likely to read this one. But maybe you will.

WRONG EARTH: WE COULD BE HEROES #1 (OF 2)

12159248880?profile=RESIZE_180x18012159249054?profile=RESIZE_180x180Story: Tom Peyer | Art: Jamal Igle, Juan Castro | Cover: Jamal Igle | Variant: Jon Proctor | Ahoy | $3.99

AHOY’s first hit series returns with a two-issue anniversary celebration from creators Tom Peyer and Jamal Igle (Dudley Datson)! With Dragonflyman, Dragonfly and the rest of the masked crime-fighters trapped elsewhere in the multiverse, Earth-Alpha’s police, government and banks are taken over by dastardly villains! New heroes emerge — but can they prevail? Also featuring a new chapter of the AHOY 5th anniversary prose serial by Mark Russell (SECOND COMING)!

We reached out to for a little more insight into what readers can expect in the new installment, as well as some behind-the-scenes commentary on the covers themselves.

"Jamal's A cover for the first issue is, of course, an homage to Gil Kane and Dave Cockrum's Giant-Size X-Men #1, one of the most frequently homaged covers ever," said editor-in-chief Tom Peyer, when cornered on a leafy Syracuse street by our team of intrepid reporters. "But we'll put ours up against anyone's, because the new heroes we're introducing — Koala Man, Hamster Man and Giraffe Man — have got to be the most ludicrous to ever homage Giant-Size X-Men #1! Jon Proctor's B cover is a color-blasted poster shot of Dragonfly & Dragonflyman, for no other reason than how stunning it is to look at. As for the story? Well, now we're back to ludicrous. And very entertaining, I hope."

  •  Ahoy Comics alert! BLACK’S MYTH: KEY TO HIS HEART #5 (OF 5) is also shipping this week.
  • I don't know if this is a good jumping-on point for what many Legionnaires recommend, but Ahoy sent me a review copy, so I'm going to give it a try.

THE JOHN SEVERIN WESTERNS FEATURING AMERICAN EAGLE HC

12259639661?profile=RESIZE_400xArt: John Severin | Fantagraphics | 488 pages | $65.00

John Severin's 1950s Western masterpiece, American Eagle, is collected for the first time in a gorgeous hardcover Fantagraphics edition.

In the 1950s, between his legendary EC work and his celebrated Marvel comics, John Severin joined with Mad artist Will Elder and Two-Fisted Tales writer Colin Dawkins to introduce a new level of historical accuracy to the comic book Western. While Native Americans had generally been vilified or left in the shadows of gun-slinging cowboy heroes, the American Eagle stories featured in Prize Comics’ Western were built around action-packed tribal intrigues and a heroic Crow warrior.

Collected here for the first time are all of the American Eagle stories drawn by Severin from Prize Comics’ Western #85-113. Plus Severin-drawn stories featuring The Fargo Kid, Black Bull and The Lazo Kid. More than 55 exciting, gorgeous, Western tales of bullets vs. arrows, stampedes, tribal warfare, prospectors, buffalo hunters, broken treaties, gun battles, cavalry charges, wagon trains and warriors on horseback. Thanks to Severin’s famously exacting art, you’ll be able to smell the leather and gunpowder.

With commentary by comics historian Howard Leroy Davis.

  • Oh yeahhhh, I'm getting this. Severin was always one of my faves. And I doubt it's really all that realistic (Southwestern tribes didn't wear feather headdresses), but at least Severin tried to step outside the savage-killer/noble-warrior dichotomy of the '50s.
  • Fantagraphics has five (!) more releases this week, including three Disney gift sets/box sets. Here are the other two:

AN ALCHEMICAL JOURNEY THROUGH THE MAJOR ARCANA OF THE TAROT: A SPIRITUALLY TRANSFORMATIVE DECK AND GUIDEBOOK TP is described as a "strikingly rendered and spiritually transformative tarot set, penned by a masterful contemporary illustrator." Here's a PREVIEW.

TIME UNDER TENSION GN is another coming-of-age cartoonist memoir in which I have no interest. Amusingly, the author says an art professor told her "Don't expect to get by on this f*cked-up broke girl sh*t." Apparently the advice didn't take. Here's a PREVIEW.

NOIR BURLESQUE HC

GREYLOCK #1

The Greylock is an outlaw mage navigating a world filled with orcs, elves and other fantastical creatures who all scramble for survival under the weight of the world’s most worshipped object — the almighty dollar.

A king’s ransom has been promised by many looking to capture the last remaining Mindwitch, a mage born with the abilities of precognition and telepathy. This hunt will put Greylock up against all manner of magical creatures as he is reminded that to those in power, the act of survival is often seen as an act of defiance.

"The Greylock does my favorite thing: it takes high concepts, like fantasy and magic, and brings them down to our dirty little level. It’s full of characters that you want to know more and more about and sets them in a world of mysticism that Harry Potter wouldn’t hang out in when the sun goes down. This book is extremely, and unapologetically, badass. Sign me up for thirty issues." — Jarred Lujan (ATDAH, Dry Foot, Crash & Troy)

?Equal parts enthralling and terrifying, The Greylock brings to life a modern-day high fantasy world that has all the bombast and spectacle of Bright paired with honesty and grit of the kind that only Shockey and Ilhan can provide." — David Hazan (Nottingham, Death Drop Drag Assassin)

"Greylock is like Blade Runner meets Dungeons & Dragons. Shockey and Ilhan drop fantastical elements into a semi-futuristic world that uses spellslinging and monsters to explore themes at the intersection of racism and classism. They are truly in their magical bag." — Morgan Hampton (Dawn of DC: Cyborg)

HOWIE THE HELLHOUND #1

12189768857?profile=RESIZE_400x12189768895?profile=RESIZE_180x180Written by Jared Prestwidge | Illustrated by Carlos Trigo | Colored by Simon Robins | Lettered by Lucas Gattoni | Edited by Nicole D’Andri | Logo by @flops | Scout Comics

HOWIE THE HELLHOUND is a supernatural dramedy about Satan's favorite pet escaping to New York and settling down with a human owner who has plenty of her own metaphorical demons to battle. The series is filled to the brim with heart, danger, and laughs, along with a sprinkling of fire and brimstone!

Satan’s favorite pet, a Hellhound named Howie, escapes the pits of Hell and settles down with a human owner, Louise, in New York City. But when Hell’s forces rise to take back what’s theirs, the pair must find a way to come out the other side and earn the fresh start at life that they both crave. HOWIE THE HELLHOUND is a supernatural dramedy filled to the brim with heart, danger, and laughs, along with a sprinkling of fire and brimstone!

“Howie the Hellhound is a story very close to my heart, and I couldn’t think of a more suitable home for it than Scout Comics. Scout and its wonderful team are constantly pushing themselves and changing what it means to be a comics fan for the better. It’s an exciting time indeed!” — Jared Prestwidge, writer of HOWIE THE HELLHOUND.

“Just like Howie himself, this series is energetic, hilarious, and endlessly charming. Get it while it’s hot!” — Mat Groom, writer of INFERNO GIRL RED, SELF/MADE (Image Comics), ULTRAMAN (Marvel Comics).

"I loved this engaging and delightful comic — delightful despite being largely about a murderous hell hound! Not everything has to be epically convoluted, and this book engages with believable dialogue and a no-messing pace. The characters are likable, and the art is charming, with very solid storytelling beats. Treat yourself!" — Liam Sharp, writer/artist of GREEN LANTERN, WONDER WOMAN, BATMAN: REPTILIAN (DC Comics), STARHENGE (Image Comics).

MARE HOLLOW: THE SHOEMAKER #1

12213104071?profile=RESIZE_180x18012213104089?profile=RESIZE_180x180Writer/Artist/Colorist:  Jake Tacito | Scout Comics

“Mare Hollow: The Shoemaker” is a horror-centric graphic novel, which combines traditional elements of gothic horror, with newer ideas of cosmic horror, and renders the story in an art style reminiscent of 1930’s Disney animation to play up the idea of a peaceful town, and cute characters, being perverted by terrifying, other-worldly creatures.

The Shoemaker leads a simple life, taking care of his cat, making shoes, and enjoying success with his business in his simple little home, in the town of “Mare Hollow.”  The only thing it seems he could possibly want for is love, but when a beautiful woman, Ida, visits his shop, he may have just found it. It would seem the bright and peaceful town could almost be a little slice of heaven, if only there wasn’t something about “Mare Hollow” that carried a forbidding darkness. After all, the terrors of ones own nightmares can only go ignored for so long.

"Working with Scout has been incredible. They’ve given me resources and suggestions to really help guide my book to be the best it can be, but they do this in a way that never takes any control away from me or my vision. I’m happy to see the company has been growing so quickly, and I’m excited to have my work be part of that growth." — Jake Tacito

  • And how could zombies overwhelm cosmic characters like Silver Surfer and Galactus, except by writer's fiat?

    Narrativium.

ALL-AMERICAN COMICS #16 FACSIMILE reprints the first appearance of Alan Scott, the first Green Lantern.

This one might be worth buying. Although I have the main story many times over, I doubt I have the rest of it.

The implication here is that... the JSA was more of a publicity stunt.

Reminds me of Dr. Manhattan and the Watchmen.

Marvel started this half-issue-numbering nonsense a few years ago, and I thought it was dumb then.

More "Marvel Math." If a series is numbered #1, #1.5, #2 and #2.5 how many issues do you have? 3? 5? No, four! And don't even get me started on "zero" issues!

I bet Archie Publications is kicking itself for not doing this first.

And I bet Archie Publications sues.

  • (And where do you even find half that stuff in 1940?)

He's got a magic ring. He can gimmick up whatever he needs. Actually, I liked the fact that so many Golden Age heroes had costumes that looked like they were designed by people with no "fashion sense". It seemed more realistic to me. I love the original Spider-Man costume, but how did a high school kid in the 60's come up with it?

  • [ALL-AMERICAN COMICS #16 FACSIMILE] might be worth buying. Although I have the main story many times over, I doubt I have the rest of it.

That very thought occurred to me. I wonder if I've read everything in the recent Flash Comics #1 facsimile, which I did not get.

And I bet Archie Publications sues.

Probably. Although they didn't sue Cherry Poptart. (Pop-Tarts did, and the name "Poptart" was dropped.) Interesting note: Cheryl Blossom was introduced later in the same year Cherry Poptart was, and tried to go topless on a beach. Her brother tried to drink beer on the beach, disguised as soda. In her subsequent appearances Cheryl was just as sanitized as the rest of the Archie gang, but one has to wonder if her first appearance was inspired by Cherry Poptart. It's not like Dan DeCarlo was a stranger to dirty cartoons.

He's got a magic ring. He can gimmick up whatever he needs.

That's a good point. Although the pedant in me has to note that originally Alan Scott's ring only affected metal. That expanded until it only wouldn't affect wood.

I liked the fact that so many Golden Age heroes had costumes that looked like they were designed by people with no "fashion sense".

I think we've had this discussion before. Anyway, not only do I agree, but I would have preferred Golden Age superheroes that affected the look of the military or athletes of the time: combat boots or cleats, football/combat helmets, leather, ropes and other combat gear. But thanks to Superman they all wore, implausibly, leotards and went unarmed. (Unless you count "Wirepoons.")

DC did an Elseworlds miniseries called The Liberty File, which featured The Bat (you know who), The Clock (Hourman) and The Owl (Doctor Mid-Nite) engaged in espionage in Europe and Egypt in World War II. They wore outfits that were all brown leather and straps and such that looked a lot like beefed-up WWI uniforms. It made sense, and it looked cool. The end included The Ubermensch (Martian Manhunter).

There were several sequels, which I don't think I read, which killed off The Owl, and introduced Mercury (Flash), Mister Terrific, Clark Kent (Zod), Superman (Superman), The Atom (killed), The Hawk (Hawkman, killed), The Tornado, The Huntress, The Lantern (Green Lantern, crippled) and The Star (Starman). If they ever reprint these stories in HC I'll get them, just to see what the uniforms looked like.

Speaking of which, have I ever asked about buccaneer boots? Captain America wore them, and may have been the first, and he was followed by many others (Hawkeye springs to mind). As noted, most superhero costumes were inspired by Superman, whose costume was based on a circus strongman. What were the buccaneer boots lifted from? Captain Blood? The Three Musketeers? What buccaneer-booted movie was popular when Captain America was conceived? They don't seem very practical for combat. I don't even know why buccaneers wore them. Did they fold up to be waders?

  • That very thought occurred to me. I wonder if I've read everything in the recent Flash Comics #1 facsimile, which I did not get.

Your mention of the recent Flash Comics #1 facsimile made me think of the mid-70s treasury edition, and that made me think of of the "Millennium" edition, and that made me remember that there wasn't an All-American Comics #16 Millennium edition.

It occurred to me a while back that they picked Alan Scott to be the gay character they needed because of his costume.

  • It occurred to me a while back that they picked Alan Scott to be the gay character they needed because of his costume.

He seemed an odd choice to me at first blush, given that he had two children. But then when I thought about it, he seemed the obvious choice.

One resaon is that there are approximately one million Green Lanterns, so making one gay doesn't change the status quo much. Alan Scott is a major character historically, sure, but his orientation isn't going to come up in most Green Lantern stories since he's not in 99.99% of them. If it didn't go over well, they could ignore it.

Also, while I didn't do any research, I knew that Alan Scott didn't really have an established, on-panel girlfriend -- he had a frenemy who flirted with him -- while most other JSA characters did. Off the top of my head, I remember that Flash, Sandman, Doctor Fate and Hawkman all had an on-panel girlfriends-slash-partners. Were there some JSA characters that didn't?  Maybe. As I said, I didn't do any research, and I don't remember the romance status of Atom or Doctor Mid-Nite or some others. But they're all pretty minor characters, so making them gay would get a big "so what" from the audience DC was trying to attract. At any rate, making Alan Scott gay didn't require retconning much Golden Age material, and he's a big Golden Age character.

And finally, the major JSA characters were largely established as married in the Silver Age -- with the notable exception of Alan Scott. Regardless of the many retcons, most people think of Flash, Hawkman, Sandman, Docto Fate Black Canary I, etc., as having long-term marriages, or at least heterosexual partnerships. Alan Scott, notably, was always a "confirmed bachelor."

All in all, he just seemed an easy choice. But now that you mention it, that flamboyant costume might be the only excuse they needed. I'm probably overthinking it!

    • And what damned difference does it make if he's gay? If necessary, mention it once and then never show it again. I mean, we didn't see Kent Nelson or Al Pratt out on dates; so we didn't need to see Alan Scott on a date. As in the real world, it makes no difference in his avocation whether Green Lantern is gay or not.

    • Mentioning it once wouldn't serve their purposes.

    • In the real world, there are a lot of kids whose father (or mother) later came out as gay. Denial of their feelings and desire to "fit in" fuels most of this.

  • For all the reasons expressed above, the pre-Crisis Golden Age Green Lantern many or may not have been gay (and for the record I say not), but the one that was explicitely gay was the post-Flashpoint New52 "Earth 2" version, not the same character.
