His short stories have appeared in such venues as Nightmare, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Escape Pod and the #1 Amazon bestseller Machine of Death. In addition, he's written video games, a wealth of tabletop gaming material, and essays for publications like Clarkesworld and Lightspeed: Queers Destroy Science Fiction.

BLACK TIDE RISING VOL 1

Story: John Ringo, Chuck Dixon | Art: Derlis Santacruz | Baen Books | $18.99

The media calls it the Pacific Flu. The CDC calls it H7D3, and it spreads like wildfire. The virus combines the worst symptoms of rabies and the common flu, and is suspected to be man-made. The first reports of feral, cannibalistic "zombie-like" symptoms were met with disbelief and skeptical amusement, but nobody's laughing now. Scientists, backed by the world's governments and its wealthiest institutions, race against the clock to develop a cure as infections rise and cities fall. A glimmer of hope appears as a vaccine is discovered, but its production requires harvesting the spinal tissue of the infected, a grim task that tests the limits of human morality. In the first days of the outbreak, a college history professor receives a cryptic warning from a trusted source. Its baffling, yet unmistakable message translates as: "PACK UP, GET OUT, AND GO NOW!" Steve Smith and his family don't waste any time; they leave their normal, comfortable lives behind to get ahead of the inevitable panic and survive the end of the world!

  • So that's where Chuck Dixon is now. Could be good.

CORMAN POE INTERVIEW ESSAYS CORMAN POE FILMS

Story: Chris Alexander | Headpress | $27.95

Produced on modest budgets for American International Pictures, Roger Corman's adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe stories were popular in their time as escapist horror cinema. Most starred horror icon Vincent Price and were written (and "freely adapted") by the likes of Richard Matheson, Charles Beaumont and Robert Towne. Today the series is recognized as unique and sophisticated, one that delivers decadent Gothic chills while exploring ideas of faith, sexuality, psychology and the supernatural. CORMAN/POE: Interviews and Essays Exploring the Making of Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe Films, 1960-1964 is the only book to fully examine this chapter in horror film history. In-depth conversations with the maverick Roger Corman are book-ended by engaging critical analyses of each of the eight films, which together stand as a fully realized and consistent creative vision.

  • I don't know why Diamond has this listed under comics instead of books, but here it is.

CREED: NEXT ROUND #1 (OF 4)

She'll also need the perfect trainer, but perfection comes with tangled strings attached.

Superstar writers LaToya Morgan (Dark Blood, AMC's The Walking Dead) and Jai Jamison (Superman & Lois), artist Wilton Santos (Break Out), alongside Creed III director and star Michael B. Jordan bring Creed to comics in a story no fan of the franchise can afford to miss!

DARK SPACES: GOOD DEEDS #2

DARKLY SHE GOES HC

Story: Hubert | Art: Vincent Mallie | NBM | $29.99

Once upon a time there was a fallen knight, who believed that saving a princess would allow him to atone for his crimes. Once upon a time there was a dark princess, who believed that it was up to her to atone for the crimes of her parents. ... Banished for a fault that forever taints his reputation, Arzhur wanders from tavern to field of battle in search of the next contract which will fill his purse. One night, three mysterious old women offer him to regain honor and fortune if he frees the daughter of a neighboring king, held captive in the ruins of an abandoned castle. But Islen is not the damsel in distress that he expected to save. Magnified by the virtuoso art of Vincent Mallié, Hubert questions the weight of family heritage and delivers, under the finery of a tale, an intimate reflection on our inner monsters.

DUST #1

Story: Brett Register | Art/Cover: Gaston Gomez | Scout | $4.99

Jupiter has ignited, the Earth has turned to Dust. The rich and powerful have built a utopia underground. The rest of humanity are left to die on the surface. Those below forge a life of luxury, while those above lead a life of poverty where only the strong survive. One of these few is a girl named, Keeli. Abandoned by her family and deported to the surface, Keeli grew up tough, taking to a life of thievery to survive. At first glance, she might look like just another dust pirate ... but, what Keeli doesn't know is that she's the hero of our story. And the secret she's about to uncover will change the world forever.

  • If Jupiter became a second sun, nobody would survive, underground or otherwise. Earth would be cooked, or torn apart by gravitational forces, or its orbit changed so radically as to be uninhabitable, or all of the above. It would be beyond catastrophic, and at the very least, an extinction event for all of Earth.
  • IOW, I'm having a little trouble with suspension of disbelief here. Doesn't anyone know any science?

MINAMI'S LOVER HC

Story/Art: Shungiku Uchida | Fantagraphics | 200 pages | $29.99

In this raunchy, moving, funny manga for adults, high school student Minami’s girlfriend, Chiyomi, shrinks down to six inches tall — and moves in with him!

Originally appearing in the underground/alternative manga magazine Garo in the 1980s and adapted for television several times, the Japanese pop culture sensation Minami’s Lover is the story of two high schoolers’ romantic relationship when one of them shrinks down to six inches tall. Everyone thinks Chiyomi has disappeared, and suspicion naturally falls on Minami, identified as her boyfriend in her diary. But after inexplicably finding herself in such a state, Chiyomi moves in with him. As depicted in Uchida’s clean, loose line and Zip-a-Tone textures, the two soon adapt to the unusual circumstances, devising ways for Chiyomi to use the toilet, brush her teeth and hair, attend classes, and more. After some silly sequences of trial and error, they even figure out a sex life. But in addition to learning how to navigate logistics, jealousy and the cat, they’re also growing up (if not taller). Uchida uses the conceit of a teen couple literally learning how to take care of one another to examine gender dynamics and intimacy.

Please note: This book is a traditional work of manga and reads back to front and right to left.

NUDISM COMES TO CONNECTICUT

Story: Jon Buller, Laura Buller | Art: Laura Buller | Art/Cover: Jon Buller | Fantagraphics | 180 pages | $30.00

Nudism Comes to Connecticut is a fascinating graphic memoir of optimism, debt, nakedness and real estate scheming in the early 1930s.

Frank Mallett, inspired by cooperative colonies he had visited in Europe, returned home envisioning utopian communities of bohemian emigrés and artistic intellectuals proliferating in sylvan harmony. With the crash of 1929 his already floundering enterprises seemed doomed — until he discovered a growing interest in healthy, wholesome nudism.

Closely based on actual people and events, Nudism Comes to Connecticut exposes the conflict between the ecstasy of the “exquisite naked plunge” and voyeurism, competitiveness, and greed by way of many period writings and letters. Although Frank’s love of nature never falters, he learns that there is more to nudism than meets the eye.

Nudism is veteran children’s book authors Jon Buller and Susan Schade’s first published graphic novel, lovingly rendered in delicate, indeed, enticing, pen lines.

THE ODDLY PEDESTRIAN LIFE OF CHRISTOPHER CHAOS #1 (OF 5)

Story: Tate Brombal, Nick Robles, James Tynion IV | Art: Isaac Goodhart | Colors: Kurt Michael Russell | Letters: Aditya Bidikar | Cover: Nick Robles | Variants: Nick Robles, David Talaski, Isaac Goodhart | Dark Horse | $4.99

From the New York Times bestselling and multi-Eisner award-winning writers of Something is Killing the Children, The Department of Truth and House of Slaughter; and the artist on Victor and Nora: A Gotham Love Story comes this LGBTQ+ horror-hero coming-of-age series that’s Invincible meets Doom Patrol.

Meet teenage mad scientist Christopher Chaos. For all his life he knew he was different. His brilliant mind works in ways that defy logic and enable him to do things that push him beyond his peers. Unfortunately, these abilities have also caused great pain in his personal life — leading others to fear him and leaving Christopher with profound loneliness and guilt.

Then one day something cracked. When the cute boy at high school turns out to be a deadly creature, Christopher finds himself pitted in a world of monsters, heroes, and a cult of hunters out to kill them all.

"The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos is a twisted love letter to Horror, high school genre stories, and to anyone who's ever felt like an outsider,” said Brombal. “We are crafting a monstrous universe of epic proportions, and I cannot wait for the world to witness the mad science that James, Isaac, Miquel, Aditya, Nick, and I have been cooking up for you. This is the comic I've always dreamed of writing.

"James and I developed an entire world and history for Christopher Chaos that is filled with monsters and mad science going back centuries. ... Now, due to such an overwhelming response from readers, we have the expanded scope necessary to explore it in its entirety! Thank you so much to everyone that's supported this odd book, and get ready to spend the next few years alongside Christopher and the monsters he picks up along the way."

“Yes! YES!! It’s alive! It’s ALIIIIVEEEE (for many more issues)!” said Isaac Goodhart.

Praise for James Tynion IV:

“It’s this tension between love and cruelty, friendship and betrayal that drives so much of the drama, mystery and appeal of The Nice House on the Lake and secures it as one of the most remarkable comic series of 2022.” — Polygon

“It’s [The Department of Truth] raw and achingly exposed, a vulnerable soft spot that makes every page feel like a fresh punch on top of an old bruise.” — The A.V. Club

Something is Killing the Children is a great story being told with incredible writing and beautiful, haunting artwork. It is everything I want from a horror comic book.” — Comicbook.com

Blue Book #1 is a loving retelling of a UFO classic, channeling all the high strangeness of the Hills' story into a tightly plotted and highly effective piece of work. Ending with a dramatic cliffhanger, this is a terrific first issue that will whet the appetite of hardcore Hynek fans and UFO newcomers alike.” — CBR

“This, and the previous story, are a sight to behold, and I think it goes without saying that we’re in for a treat with this whole series.” — Comics Beat

Blue Book #1 is a brilliantly creepy and unique comic in a genre seldom utilized in the comics medium.” — Monkeys Fighting Robots

Praise for The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos:

Christopher Chaos, much like Brombal’s prior Barbalien (also lettered by the ever-excellent Aditya Bidikar), is a book steeped in the experience of being queer. It is about being the absolutely neurotic, anxious mess of a queer teenager. An experience we can all understand and relate to. Only it, y’know, has more werewolves, Frankensteins and crazy Cult Cops Of Complicity that want to help enforce the normalcy of the world.” — Comic Book Herald

"THE ODDLY PEDESTRIAN LIFE OF CHRISTOPHER CHAOS is fun, funny, heartfelt, and horrific. It's everything you could possibly want in a comic about a mad teen scientist. "— Chris Condon (That Texas Blood)

"An artful blend of everything that makes comics great! Monsters, super-science, and a weird coming-of-age superhero story that's unlike anything else on shelves." — Zac Thompson (Undone By Blood, The Brother of All Men, The Dregs)

THE PLANETOID AND OTHER STORIES HC

Joe Orlando | Fantagraphics | 208 pages | $35.00

Joe Orlando partnered early with Wallace Wood on a variety of science fiction comics, including several for EC Comics. But he quickly made a name for himself and struck out on his own, carving out a long and distinguished career in American comics.

Orlando became a mainstay at EC, especially on science fiction, and The Planetoid And Other Stories collects his first two dozen. All of them, scripted by editor/writer Al Feldstein, serve up classic O. Henry–style shock endings, including a mind-bending time-travel twister in which a man visits the past and (unknowingly) romances his own mother (think about it), a gender-switching look at a future where women are the breadwinners and men are the homemakers, another future where marriages are limited by law to three-year contracts, a good old-fashioned “planets collide” shocker, an animal rights parable, plus lots of rollicking space opera, aliens, and, of course, interplanetary monsters (some of them human).

This volume also includes a complete reproduction of EC’s special issue devoted to its own 32-page “illustrated, factual flying saucer report,” with art by Orlando, Wallace Wood, George Evans, and Reed Crandall. Plus, a heartfelt foreword by former DC publisher Paul Levitz, who began his career in comics when Orlando hired him as an assistant, an introduction by Thommy Burns, and featured essays and commentary by EC experts.

What happens when the group’s main quest leads to a more sinister mission, complete with a dastardly Big Bad who is the monster of children’s stories? D’arik must find a way to help his friends, save the day, and still keep his home life intact … no matter what happens.

“This is one of the most gratifying things that’s ever happened to me," writer/creator Grant Stoye said. "Scout took a chance on me when I hadn’t established much of a resume and stuck with me during the gestation process of this series. Their belief in this story and support means the world to me.”

"SIDEQUEST is an incredibly fun story full of loveable characters that immediately sink their hooks into you...but, more than that, SIDEQUEST is a beautifully emotional story brimming with heart from page to page." – Jarred Lujan, Dry Foot, All the Devils are Here, Crash & Troy

"Full of charm, wit, and the most lovable adventurers this side of Tol Kestra, SIDEQUEST is a MUST READ for fans of DnD. A truly captivating story about what it means to escape into wonder." — Fellhound, Commander Rao, And We Love You

“If you have slept on SIDEQUEST, now is your time to correct this. One of the best comics I’ve ever backed on Kickstarter.” — Frankee White, 23 Fists, Eat My Flesh Drink My Blood

  • I'm pretty sure that the "Jupiter as second sun" bit was already done in the novel and film 2010.

  • "[Three Jokers] was a great idea, but I was disappointed in the execution."

I have to agree with you there. And I read it twice.

"I have to give a shout-out to this homage to the famous Batman & Robin rooftop pose from Detective Comics #352!"

Also, I see a lot of Mike Zeck's Punisher #1 in that Starfinder alternate cover just above it.

"Sadly, at the time we thought it meant something."

It did mean something... at the time.

"If Jupiter became a second sun, nobody would survive... Doesn't anyone know any science?"

I don't know, Cap. Arthur C. Clarke posited it, and he certainly knew something about science.

"Didn't Geoff Johns get in a lot of trouble for something similar involving Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne?"

I don't know whether or not he got in any trouble for it, be we certainly eviscerated him here on this board at the time.

    (Apparently I'm feeling "talky" today.)

    • This was a great idea, but I was disappointed in the execution.

I was iffy about this, but I got the first issue from the dollar bin, and an art mistake yanked me out of the story, so I didn't read the rest of the series.

The mistake? There's a scene in which Batman kicks in the doors in an ambulance, which is impossible. Ambulance doors open outward.

  • As I recall,  in Clarke's book, Jupiter ignited, but did not gain any mass, so there were no gravitic effects, and it put out only a tiny fragment of the Sun's heat and light, so while it did strongly effect the Earth by mostly eliminating night, it didn't fry the planet. This was the work of the Beings behind the Monoliths, so  I'm imagining "Time Lord" levels of stellar engineering.  I'm sure that there's still many reasons why it's scientifc nonsense, of course.

  • Before I read The Baron’s post I had already prepared the following. I think the bit about Europa is interesting:

I don’t know the science involved but remember that in 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984), the sequel to      2001: A Space Odessey (1968), Jupiter ignited as a star and its moon, Europa, now a planet was declared off        limits by the Power(s)-That-Be.

  • I can buy Jupiter become a pseudo-sun, like The Baron's description (of Clarke's description). Anything like a real solar mass (big enough to begin and maintain internal nuclear fusion) would be curtains for Earth.

  • "Affect", not "effect".
