It's an old question, but a good summer one.  You're trapped on an island...you have food, water, and shelter.  A seagull flies over once a month and drops five comics...which five comic series do you hope fall from the sky?

For me:

Amazing Spider-Man

Usagi Yojimbo

Daredevil

Jughead

Whatever Naoki Urasawa is working on

First four were easy, it took me a while to pare down to the fifth one.

  • New comics or backissues? So much of what I read today is limited rather than ongoing, so I'm afraid that whatever I would choose to follow would run its course and I'd be left with nothing to read in a few short months.
  • How about a reprint series that will have or has a lot of volumes?
  • Are there any comics about how to kill, dress and cook a seagull?

    Tales of the Black Freighter.
  • Awesome.

If we’re going to suppose that the hypothetical seagull can carry one hardcover reprint (some of them are pretty heavy!) instead of five comic books, I’ll take whatever comic strip collection comes out that month. Individual series aren’t published that often, but there’s usually at least one each month. Just yesterday, as a matter of fact, I bought volume one of Roy Rogers comic strips (dailies and Sundays) as well as Miss Fury (Sundays). Each month would see the release of at least one of, say… Li’l Abner, Little Orphan Annie, The Phantom, Archie, Buck Rogers, Secret Agent Corrigan, Rip Kirby, Dick Tracy, etc.

    That’s what I’d choose.

I still think I’d come out ahead on the deal, though. ;)

Are you suggesting that comic books migrate?

  • Not at all. They could be carried. A seagull could grip it by the cover.
  • Monty Python fail...
