ABSOLUTE GREEN ARROW #3 (OF 6)

31191570493?profile=RESIZE_192X(W) Pornsak Pichetshote (A/CA) Rafael Albuquerque

DINAH ON THE TRAIL OF THE GREEN ARROW KILLER! After the horrifying events of last issue, Dinah must capture the Green Arrow Killer as she finally finds Oliver Queen's protege Roy Harper. But as the killer's attacks intensify and Dinah discovers the unsettling effect they're having on Star City, Harper's trail takes her on a journey darker and more twisted than she ever imagined.

My enthusiasm for the Absolute line has been cooling, but I took a chance on this title anyway. "It's only six issues," I thought. But now it occurs to me that that's how Absolute Martian Manhunter began, and then I got suckered into 12 issues, the last six of which I actively resented. That may be petty, but I felt bait-and-switched.

CATWOMAN #89

31191573083?profile=RESIZE_192X(W) Torunn Gronbekk (A) Davide Gianfelice (CA) Frank Cho

TICK TICK BOOM! Catwoman is caught in Alley Town as Black Mask's plan reaches its penultimate phase. With all the pieces finally in play, can Selina figure out Black Mask's ultimate goal, or is it curtains for the feline fatale?

I'm guessing that this is the ultimate phase of Black Mask's plan, not his second-to-last phase, and they just used the wrong word. At least they didn't spell it "faze." And I do like Cho's Steranko-esque cover. Pop art will never die, baby!

DARK KNIGHTS OF STEEL II #1 (OF 12)

31134500495?profile=RESIZE_192X31191579668?profile=RESIZE_192XDC today announced Dark Knights of Steel II, a 12-issue high-fantasy epic from writer Tom Taylor and artist Otto Schmidt that ushers in a new age of war, magic, and destiny. As the great houses of El and Wayne, the Kingdom of Storms, and the Amazons brace for the return of an escalating conflict, the peace forged at the end of the first series stands on the brink of collapse.

THE STORY SO FAR

The first Dark Knights of Steel saga reshaped a world built on prophecy, power, and fear. The House of El’s arrival from the stars ignited alliances and rivalries across three great kingdoms, pulling monarchs, warriors, and legends into a war none of them truly understood. Only when the dust settled did the truth emerge: Shape-shifting invaders had engineered the conflict from the shadows. United by hard-won trust, the Els, the Amazons, and the Kingdom of Storms formed a league—unaware that a deeper betrayal still waited within their ranks.

KEY FIGURES OF THE REALM

The world of Dark Knights of Steel is shaped by four great powers: the House of El, led by Queen Lara and her children, Prince Kal−El and Princess Zala; the House of Wayne, with Bruce Wayne serving as sworn protector to the Els; the Kingdom of Storms, now ruled by Queen Anissa with counsel from John Constantine; and the warriors of Amazonia, led by Queen Hippolyta and Princess Diana. Across the first series, Zala and Diana forged a powerful bond that now stands as one of the realm’s strongest alliances.

THE NEXT CHAPTER BEGINS

This July, the world of Dark Knights of Steel enters a new era as an ancient war stirs beneath the waves. And when the conflict threatens to rise from the deep, it carries with it a force capable of shattering the peace the League fought so hard to build. But the greatest danger may not come from the ocean at all—a traitor moves among them, hidden in plain sight, and their first strike will test the League’s unity like never before. The result is a 12-issue saga of war, magic, and destiny that pushes this universe into its most perilous age yet.

THE TEAM SHAPING THE NEXT ERA

Led by worldwide bestselling writer Tom Taylor and brought to life by artist Otto Schmidt, with colors by Arif Prianto and letters by Wes Abbott, Dark Knights of Steel II expands the scope and scale of the original saga. Together, this creative team pushes the world of swords, storms, and superpowers into a new era of high-fantasy conflict, with bold visuals and sweeping storytelling that build on the foundations laid in the first series.

“I was raised on comic books and fantasy novels,” shared Taylor. “From as early as I can remember, my mind has been filled with universes of great heroes standing against corrupting evil and injustice. From the Discworld to the DCU, I have been thrilled by the epics and heroism of J.R.R. Tolkien and Mark Waid, by the humor and heart of Gail Simone, Joe Kelly, and Terry Pratchett, by the jaw-dropping character arcs of Garth Ennis and Robin Hobb.

“So I am beyond excited to return to our fusion of fantasy and superheroes with Otto Schmidt, Arif Prianto, Wes Abbott, Matthew Levine, and Andrea Shea,” continued Taylor. “Dark Knights of Steel II is a twisted tale of power and betrayal, of war and love, of heroes fighting would-be tyrants, and of good people coming together to stand against evil, expansionist empires.

“Forging two of my favorite things together with heat vision and an anvil is my absolute happy place,” said Taylor. “I’m sorry in advance for all the terrible things that happen.”

Dark Knights of Steel II #1 features a main cover by Yasmine Putri, with variant covers by Travis Moore and Tamra Bonvillain, Davide Paratore, and Joshua Middleton, plus a foil variant cover by Middleton. The 40-page issue will retail for $4.99, with card-stock variants available for $5.99. Dark Knights of Steel II #1 arrives on July 15, 2026, and launches the first chapter of the 12-issue series.

With a new war rising, a new king emerging, and a traitor hidden in the League’s midst, Dark Knights of Steel II marks the next chapter in DC’s most ambitious fantasy epic. The battle for this world is far from over—and the truth waiting beneath the waves will change everything.

Doggone it, I haven't read the first one yet! Nobody's fault but my own, I suppose.

I have been saving the "Wonder War" issues to read in what Jeff calls "a satisfying chunk." This "interlude" issue suggests the first phase is over, so it might be time to dive in!

AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON #2

31191548089?profile=RESIZE_192XWriter: Chip Zdarsky

THE FINAL RECKONING THAT LEADS TO A MAJOR SHAKEUP FOR THE AVENGERS! YOU'RE GOING DOWN, THUNDERBOLT ROSS! Red Hulk's tirade across the globe must be stopped! Until a mysterious new hero as powerful as the Sentry appears to level Red Hulk and the Avengers.

You say "tirade," anonymous blurb writer who is probably an intern, but it doesn't mean what you think it does. The word you're looking for is probably "rampage."

As I've noted previously, I'm not buying this monthly. If the reviews are good, I might get it in collected form. But from the press releases, we know where this is going: Somehow, all Avengers (which appears to me to be the bulk of the Marvel Universe without "X" or "Fantastic" in the title) are going to be sidelined, and "Earth's Mightiest Survivors" will form a new Avengers. Those "survivors" (implying all the others are temporarily dead, but that would be awkward for all the solo titles, so we'll see) are  Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Daredevil and Luke Cage.

Currently Captain America is already dead, and is dealing with (the also dead) Doctor Doom. I don't know the circumstances. Since I am getting Captain America, I guess I'll find out. Speaking of which ...

CAPTAIN AMERICA: HELL'S ANGEL! VICTOR VON DOOM has captured the soul of Captain America, dragging him to an unfamiliar battlefield to use him as an unwilling weapon. As Steve Rogers struggles to survive in a world he doesn't understand, the world he left behind needs him more than ever. And ARMAGEDDON draws ever closer...

Told you! The solicitations suggest these two will form sort of grudging alliance to do ... something. Something Armageddon-related, I imagine, since Chip Zdarsky is writing both (and the upcoming Avengers series).

PUNISHER VS. SPIDER-MAN #1 (OF 5)

This summer Peter Parker and Frank Castle take a walk down memory pain in PUNISHER VS. SPIDER-MAN, an all-new five issue limited series detailing some of the duo’s earliest encounters in the Marvel Universe.

Taking place shortly after Punisher’s debut dust-up with Spider-Man in the pages of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #129, writer Dan Abnett (IMPERIAL GUARDIANS) and artist Matteo Della Fonte (NOVA: CENTURION) force Peter Parker and Frank Castle to set aside their differences for the greater good … until they inevitably turn on one another once again.

“I'm very happy to be writing these two characters in a head-to-head together, and to be revisiting the Punisher, a character I haven’t written since YEAR ONE in the nineties,” explains Abnett. “The series is a whole lot of fun and full of big action, and some genuine surprises as they learn stuff about each other for the first time. That’s the real joy of going back to this pivotal early point in continuity: there’s a freshness in their encounters and interactions that I think readers are really going to get a kick out of.”

THE PUNISHER AND SPIDER-MAN, two of the most notorious names in New York City with very different approaches to making the Big Apple safer (or not, depending on who you ask!). Brought together by happenstance and forced to stay that way by an ally from Frank Castle’s past in need, will the web-slinger and the gunslinger be able to begrudgingly set aside their differences before they find themselves at one another’s throats?!

This appears to be a re-write (and expansion) of Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1974), the first appearance of both Frank Castle and The Jackal. I never liked The Jackal, because he felt to me like a Green Goblin retread. But given that Miles Warren created Ben Reilly, he's imbedded in the mythos and can't be avoided. So there's that. And the world has changed a tad since 1974, so the story could probably use a bit of a refresh. I don't need to read this personally, but I can see the logic.

Say, it just occurred to me: Whatever happened to the Gwen Stacy clone? I seem to remember a story where she decided to leave New York (or maybe the country) because of all the baggage. They were clearly intending to write her out of the series entirely at the time, but I don't know if that was the last word.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG X GODZILLA #1

31101130456?profile=RESIZE_400xThe fan-favorite worlds of SONIC THE HEDGEHOG™ and GODZILLA are set to collide for the first time ever in comic books.

Speeding and stomping into comic shops this summer is SONIC X GODZILLA #1, a fun-filled celebration of both beloved franchises by writer Nick Marino (GODZILLA RIVALS) and artist Jack Lawrence (SONIC THE HEDGEHOG).

When the King of the Monsters and other iconic kaiju mysteriously arrive in the Blue Blur’s world, the brilliant and evil Dr. Eggman will try to harness the power of the kaiju for his own nefarious goals. Only Sonic and his amazing allies - including Amy, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow - will be able to stand in the villain’s way and try to send the giant monsters back to their own world.

"I'm doing my best to cook up fun scenarios for Jack to draw, and then I'm making sure my panel counts leave enough room for him to properly play around with the fantastic spectacle that this crossover deserves," commented Marino. "I'm fascinated by the scale of life, how we perceive lifeforms differently from bacteria to planet-wide ecosystems, from micro to macro. This particular character combination allows me to explore that in a fun way, and it's been really satisfying. I hope our readers agree that the result is a cohesive mix of these two visual focuses– small speedsters and massive monsters– that delivers the best of both worlds!"

“Sonic and Godzilla are such fun, action-packed franchises on their own, so it was a natural fit to pair them together, and it’s been a treat seeing the story and art come together,” added IDW’s Sonic Editorial. “We know how long fans have been asking for this crossover, and we wanted to make sure it’ll be worth the wait, so we’re going big: A mysterious portal, a massive kaiju attack on Sonic's World that inspires a new scheme by Dr. Eggman to take over the world, Knuckles and Shadow joining alongside Amy and Tails... and of course, plenty of Sonic and Godzilla!

An undertaking like this isn’t possible alone, though, so a huge thanks to our partners at SEGA® and Toho, who have been there every step of the way with guidance and support, and to our fantastic creative team of Nick Marino, Jack Lawrence, and colorist Reggie Graham, who have brought this story to life. It’s been a blast working on this series, and we’re so excited to finally be able to share it with fans!”

With both properties at IDW, it was bound to happen.

DARK HORSE

KINGDOM OF EARTH #1 (OF 4)

31127768074?profile=RESIZE_192XFrom the critically acclaimed writing duo of actor, writer, and producer David Dastmalchian (Count Crowley, Through), and actor, writer, and producer Leah Kilpatrick (Headless Horseman, DC Horror Presents) along with the Bram Stoker Award-winning artist Soo Lee (Carmilla, Minor Threats), Dark Horse Comics invites readers to journey into a world where humans are no longer the dominant species with Kingdom of Earth. The four-issue series features letterer Frank Cvetkovic (Cyberpunk 2077, Tramps of the Apocalypse) with cover art by Lee.

“It's tempting to abandon hope when the world is dominated by monsters ... right?! But thanks to the incredible passion of my creative partners on this book," said Dastmalchian, “we created a terrifying world where a small flicker of hope burns amidst an apocalyptic landscape. I love mash-ups and this series is the ultimate mash-up. Every monster you've ever seen, read or studied battles for supremacy while a small movement of humans plot survival and rebellion.

“I love being able to draw monsters and creatures that go bump in the night,” said Lee. “It's so much more different than what I've been working on lately and thanks to my collaborators, I'm able to test myself by making this dark and terrible world beautiful in my own way. I hope everyone is captivated by the world we have developed in Kingdom of Earth.“

In Kingdom of Earth:

2036. Two years ago, hordes of monsters rose from the earth and sea, devouring everything in sight. Much of mankind was massacred before the monsters realized they needed humans. In this new world, humans have two options: service or slaughter. When a young child named Frankie narrowly escapes their fate as livestock, they soon realize that their fight for survival has only just begun.

"I love monsters. Every culture has its own folklore, fables, and ghost stories that terrify people in their own unique way,” added Kilpatrick. “Kingdom of Earth gives us the chance to mine from all of it. I’ve never seen a story, aside from one of my favorites, Cabin in the Woods, where every monster imaginable collides in one world of horror, chaos, and ambition. In KOE, nothing is off-limits. The fun is getting to know these creatures and giving them personality, fears, and motives of their own."

I love, love, love David Dastmalchian the actor, who has been in a lot of genre material, like all three Ant-Man movies, Dune: Part One, The Suicide Squad and The Flash (TV show), always playing someone a bit off-kilter. He was even in Oppenheimer! But he's also a genre writer, and was involved in Count Crowley, which I quite enjoyed. I will definitely be checking this one out. Here's a PREVIEW.

GRENDEL: DEVIL’S CRUCIBLE — SEDITION

31127770480?profile=RESIZE_192X31127770279?profile=RESIZE_192XDark Horse comics and Matt Wagner continue to explore the new era of Grendel in the Grendel: Devil’s Crucible story arc with Grendel: Devil’s Crucible–Sedition. This four-issue mini-series continues immediately after Grendel: Devil’s Crucible–Defiance and sees Wagner return to a beloved protagonist alongside colorist Brennan Wagner and letterer Steve Dutro. The first issue offers a variant cover from Brennan Wagner, with further series variants from Steve Musgrave, Mark Laszlo, and John K. Snyder.

In Grendel: Devil’s Crucible – Sedition:

The Hounds of Orion have two new weapons in their arsenal: The Grendel Prime himself, back from a five-hundred-year absence, and a clone of the fierce, long-dead Grendel warrior Christine Spar! Now it’s time to take the fight to the Necro-Lords, and the hordes of Anti-Grendel squads between Grendel Prime and his goal of total control.

"For years, readers have begged me to return to the character of Christine Spar but, due to the tightly choreographed nature of DEVIL'S LEGACY, her initial storyline, there just wasn't any room to fit in any more adventures,” confirmed Wagner. “But I finally hit on the perfect way to cast Christine...now known as X-tine...back into the role of Grendel and I'm happy to say that she's just as fierce and fiery as she ever was.  Maybe even more so!  You won't believe what fate has in store for her this time around."

I have loved everything Matt Wagner has ever done —  except Grendel. For some reason, this concept just didn't grab me. But my opinions are hardly universal, so here's a press release and a PREVIEW.

Conan the Adventurer collected for the first time ever and given the now classic Omnibus collection treatment! Featuring unseen bonus material and an all-new introduction!

A year after the demise of the legendary Conan the Barbarian comic, which had run for 275 issues, Conan the Cimmerian returned in Conan the Adventurer, an all-new comic written by Conan stalwart Roy Thomas and illustrated by Rafael Kayanan and John Watkiss.

BEFORE HE WAS KING, HE WAS CONAN THE ADVENTURER!

You know, I'm not sure if I've read this before. It ran 14 issues in 1994-1995, but I think I quit Conan the Barbarian before that title ended, because it was so repetitive. And I might not have picked this up at all. But then again, I might have, and it just wasn't memorable enough for me to remember doing it!

I'm not reading it, either, but could it be that the Rulk is on a speaking tour?

What if I didn't get Marvel's FCBD issues? Do I need it then?

Whatever happened to the Gwen Stacy clone?

Seems to me I once knew the answer to that question, but I don't want to think about it.

He's never going away, is he?

    Badrock or Rob Liefeld?

Is this the first of Oni's EC titles to progress past issue #12?

Epitaphs from the Abyss lasted 12 issues, Cruel Universe v1 ran five issues and v2 twelve for a total of 17, but Catacomb of Torment is the first to be numbered 13.

  • I've already picked up My Hero Academia: Team-Up Missions, vol. 8. It's the final volume, which means that the last volume of the three MHA series that I've been following has ended. I've enjoyed the MHA universe, with its portrayal of a world where most of the population has super-powers.. Much gratitude to the late, great Randy Jackson for turning me on to MHA in the first place.

  • I am not.100% positive, but I think we met the Gwen clone in one of.the Evolutionary Wars annuals.

IIRC it was revealed that Jackal could.not create clones proper, but.instead rewrote over.the genotype and.phenotype of.existing adult people.

One of.the Young Gods decided to.reverse the proccess and she resume her original.identity and went.on with her.life

    • But then she was revealed to be a real clone in the early 2000s and there were other Gwen Stacy clones!

At least, I think so! I try not to recall things like that!

  • Whatever happened to the Gwen Stacy clone?

Seems to me I once knew the answer to that question, but I don't want to think about it.

I wasn't on hand for the entire Clone Saga, but this link will take you to her story.. The Jackal's "clones" were something other than clones. Maybe transporter duplicates? True clones are like identical twins. You would be able to tell them apart by their fingerprints. Fingerprints are formed later and are not part of DNA. Similarly, an actual clone of a cat with more than a single color fur had the colors but in a different pattern. And true clones do not melt in the end any more than we do.

    Pedantic Me

Gwen Stacy Clones (Earth-616) | Marvel Database | Fandom

    • I don't  mind a bit of pedantry here! Since the 1970s, pop culture has been sending in the clones without the slightest idea of what cloning means and how it works.*

Orphan Black did better than most. I recommend it for many other reasons.

*Prove me wrong. The entire Clone Wars saga is a by-product of a throwaway line in the original Star Wars that used "clone" because it was trendy science news at the time. Sort of how Lucas and co. dressed Obi-Wan in a manner that was practical for the desert and rather resembled what many other characters were wearing on Tatooine, and later decided that's just what Jedi Knights wore and [insert thirty-eight-page fan rant here].
