*He was the town's wtater commissioner, you know.

  • I did not know that!

  • Oh, good! I'm looking forward to another seance. And, eventually, to meeting the illustrious Throckmorton, Baron!

  • Just saw the show's wildest escape yet, as I've made it to episode 837! Edward has trapped Barnabas in a cell, planning to let him get killed by the dawn. All the secret passages out of the cell are sealed. But Barnabas hides a letter to the future in a writing desk that he knows will survive into the late 60s, and Julia gets the letter and comes back in time to save him! (After talking with the ghost of Beth, and finding out exactly how the deaths of Quentin and Beth went down: Beth shot Quentin, then killed herself the next day.) Unfortunately, Julia has amnesia when she arrives in the past. Quentin finds the letter and frees Barnabas, knowing he's fated to die that day: September 10, 1897.

Oh, and David is dead, but I don't think that will last.

  • And now episode 838, in which we see how Quentin escapes death... not through the help of Barnabas and Julia, but by Count Petofi! Nefarious!

Giving Julia amnesia from her time-trip was a great move, as it allowed Quentin to fret all day, not knowing from which direction death was coming. And this was a very interested episode, seeing how so much of it was a reshoot from the flashbacks from a few days before.

  • Julia time-traveling into the past was the "significant plot development" I alluded to back on September 16. Julia is one of the show's "Big Guns" (Barnabas, Quentin, Angelique, Julia) and now Grayson Hall is playing two roles in 1897. It's a mug's game trying to figure out the mechanicas and ramifications of time-travel on Dark Shadows, but it's fun to take a crack at it anyway. The show has long since stopped being a gothic horror and has since become supernatural/time travel. The current method of choice is the I-Ching wands, but how does that work, exactly? It made sense (Dark Shadows "sense") that Barnabas could be able to travel to 1897 because he had a body there (his own, in a coffin), but Julia? In the days to come, you will learn that Julia exists as her "astral self" and is impervious to harm. But she changes clothes in the past, and when she returns to the present she leaves her modern clothes behind. Is she naked? (That's scary!) How did she create an astral set of clothes and then leave them behind? They're starting to wind up the 1897 arc, but there's still about 10 weeks to go from where you are. Soon you'll meet an important new character (in 844) and there are some truly wild surprises yet to come after that.

    • Nice! I'm looking forward to it.

I've reached episode 839, in which Quentin, Barnabas, and Julia catch up, Julia looks into the future and sees David come to life again, and Quentin acts shady when Barbabas asks whether Petofi wanted anything in return for saving his life.

Plus, Julia establishes some contacts with the local coven (offscreen) to get chemicals to cure Barnabas, and then is abducted at the end of the show! Almost certainly by Petofi, but we'll see.

  • Extremely sad news today. She will be missed. 💔
