End of an Era?

So, I decided to drop All-Star Western, starting with today's issue. So what? So, for the first time since about 1975 there are no DC or Marvel on-going monthly books that I am following. Not following any "third-party" books at the moment, either.  There's a few manga series that I'm following, but that's about it.

Am I saying "I'll never buy another DC or Marvel book again?" No.

But it still feels like an ending.

"HOMER:  Marge, I'm confused. Is this a happy ending or a sad ending?

MARGE: It's an ending.That's enough."

  • Following ongoings has gotten hard and harder for a long time now. Retcons, revamps, series starts and stops, storylines interrupted for crossovers... At the moment I'm following World's Finest, Catwoman and a lot of the forever evil stuff, but I've found it's almost easier to keep track of Empowered paperpacks than it is ongoings.

  • You made it just about 40 years, so that is pretty significant to me. Definitely, the end of an era.

Now just go back and re-read all of your comics and review them. photo tongue.gif

Considering the number of comics that I just got rid of, the remaining number might just be manageable...

  • From DC and Vertigo I have the following remaining on my pull list (though most are in my to-be-read "pile").

    Astro City
    Fables
    Fairest
    Flash
    Sandman Overture
    Unwritten
    Wonder Woman

I dropped all of the Batman and Green Lantern titles.

From Marvel I was previously buying only the Spider-Man and Fantastic Four books, but dropped them.

I am following several trade collections, such as Saga, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Powers. Have caught up on Irredeemable, Incorruptible, and Planetary. Am getting around to finishing the original run of Authority. Just finished reading Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow and Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader. The latter blew me away!

  • I've always "trade-waited" Astro City.

  • Just realized I'm still following Tarot, Witch of the Black Rose, Dark Shadows and the latest Battlestar Galactica.

  • I think what did for me with DC at least was the whole Nu52 thing. I liked the pre-Flashpoint DC continuity, and was sorry to see it go. I did try to give the new continuity a chance, but it just never caught on with me. With Marvel, it just sort of drifted away from me. I think the last Marvel book I read regularly was whatever the last Hercules book was.

  • Marvel's over-arching meta story for the last few years have been about elitist thugs who hold themselves above the common ruck of humanity and our laws, whilst fighting over who gets to be Top Dog - Tony or Cap, Osborne or the "good guys", Avengers or X-Men, etc.

That's a horrible story to follow.

But there have been some gems amongst the dross.

There's a throughline from Avengers The Initiative, onto Slott's Mighty Avengers and into Avengers Academy that is occasionally excellent.  I'm really enjoying the latter right now.  Some affecting stuff about misfit teenagers that's beautifully paced and plotted.  I'll go on to read Avengers Arena once I've finished Avengers Academy, I think.  I heard it was good too, and features some of the same characters.  I'm going to give the new Ms Marvel ongoing a shot, about the Muslim teenager.  Sounds like something a bit different.

    As for the DCnU....

But right now, I'm not getting any ongoings from Marvel or DC.

So why have you decided to drop Jonah Hex?  I believe he's in the 21st Century now.  Subjecting him to the 'all-titles will have the same tone and content' policy as the rest of the DCU was maybe the last straw?

  • Mostly I just thought the "Hex in the 21st Century" storyline was going on too long, and this was as someone who'd enjoyed the old Hex book back in the day.  The "fish out of water" stuff is OK for a few issues, but ultimately I think "Old West" characters work best in the Old West.  Plus, it was beginning to feel like I was buying the book out of habit and not out of enthusiasm.

  • The only DCU title that I'm currently following is Batgirl.  However, I'm giving the new Harley Quinn a chance.  I haven't decided on whether to add it to the pull list yet.

I am getting a few Vertigo titles as well: American Vampire (second season is coming soon!), Astro City, Fables and The Wake.  I'm also giving Dead Boy Detectives a try-out.  Like Harley Quinn, it's too early to say if it's pull list material.
