What amazes me is that Jay is only 2 years younger than Johnny when he retired. I haven't watched an entire episode of any late night talk show in probably 15+ years.
Every so often I see a clip of Carson interviewing someone, strange how much time has passed.
Just the way you phrased that sentence shows how much time has passed.
To all of us who lived through any part of Johnny Carson's reign as host of The Tonight Show, all you have to say is "Carson"---"Did you see Carson's monologue last night?"---and we know immediately who and what you're talking about. But go up to anyone born in the two decades since and say "Carson", and all you'll likely get is a stare.

When I think about it I'm not sure if Johnny Carson created the talk show format, but I can't think of many who were as successful as he was with it. For a time if you were a young comic the Tonight Show was where you wanted to go. It was a different era for celebrities too, long before the web.

He popped up in a Spider-Man issue when he was still doing the show from New York.
JJJ should have been brought up on criminal charges for what he did in that story.
WHAT!?!?!
Great.
Scott.
That can't be right...

Not just that story, but many, many others ...
I bet Johnny never did pay him the money for the appearance.

Letterman has now been doing a late night talk show longer than Carson did.
Nowadays, if you say "Carson" in relation to TV, people might think you're talking about Downton Abbey.
