Saw a Takashi Miike picture called The Great Yokai War. "Yokai" is a Japanese term for monsters from folklore, as opposed to the more familiar kaiju. It's a kids' picture, about a young boy from Tokyo sent out to live in the countryside with his older sister and his intermittently senile grandfather. When a vengeful spirit appears, the boy gets caught up in a war between warring groups of yokai and must find his courage to become the "Kirin Rider", the hero who will set everything to rights. It's not a bad picture - nothing deep, but an amusing story. Some of the yokai are really trippy, Japanese folklore can get pretty "out there", apparently.

I also figured some would have a problem with that.

Current relevant news: The area where this was filmed (and expressly set-- the movie is casually Canadian) received the worst of the recent snowstorms in Ontario. Two towns in the region had to declare a state of emergency. They're digging their way out now.
Local to me, we just had way too much snow for a couple of days. Schoolbuses were cancelled, the rural schools were closed, and like that, but otherwise, it wasn't too bad. Lots o' shovelling and some of us had to help a kid down the street get his car un-stuck. In short, winter.

I first watched Aubrey Plaza on Parks and Recreation in 2009. Even though that was 15 years ago, I was surprised that she was playing her own age in My Old Ass. Time marches on (dammit).
Somehow, I don't think we ever acknowledged the recent death of Teri Garr. I’ve heard the phrase “thank you, doctor” twice recently and it always reminds me of her classic scene in Young Frankenstein:

More seriously, I liked it a lot. There was a lot in it that was reminiscent of the first two Showa Era Godzilla films, what with the heroic pilot, and the out-there method concocted of dealing with Big Goji. The human characters were interesting and engaging, too, which you don't always get in these pictures. And of course, the great Ifukube themes.

Finally saw Godzilla Minus One (2023).
