VERA LYNN
We both knew her WWII songs but didn't know her name until now.
For those of you who don't know the name, Vera Lynn was Britain's answer to Kate Smith, and of all the morale-boosting songs she performed during World War II, her "Land of Hope and Glory" is to her countrymen what Kate Smith's "God Bless America" was to us Americans.
If, over the next few days, you wonder why she's referred to as Britain's national treasure, then go to YouTube and look up any video of her singing "Land of Hope and Glory". It doesn't matter what decade---the "40's, '50's, '60's, up through the twenty-first century---her voice is clear and strong. Watch the audiences sing with her in pride.
I'm not even British and it always brings a lump to my throat.
She had quite a revival recently, as "We'll Meet Again," one of the definitive WW II anthems, was revived as a pandemic anthem. As a result, she became the oldest living artist to have a song chart. Her recent interviews revealed someone who didn't look a day over 80.
