I know he'll be praised/slated for his Bond/Saint/Persueders stuff but I'd like to register an early shout-out for his performance(s) in "The Man Who Haunted Himself" . class.
My first Bond movie was Moonraker, so Moore was my first Bond, too. My friend's dad, an undertaker, drove us to the movie in his hearse, so I guess in my heart I knew this day would come.
Not my favorite Bond but he was always entertaining in the role. The writing of some of his Bond films was campy at times but he elevated the stories in my opinion.
Knowing that I had a Roger Moore adaption somewhere, I dug through my upstairs closet amid multiple issues of Starlog, Famous Monsters of Filmland, Comics Journal, Comics Scene, Comics Feature, many many Star Trek magazines among other treasures that I may write about later to find it as the last book on the last stack!
To my surprise, it wasn't For Your Eyes Only, it was Octopussy! Amazing that was the feature of Marvel Super Special #26 (1983). Since it was by Steve Moore and Paul Neary, I'm assuming that it was originally a British adaptation sent overseas!
I liked that he could laugh at himself and his image. He did it in Cannonball Run and in a movie where he did a very nice imitation of Peter Sellers Inspector Clusau. I think he had more of a gift for comedy than was ever really exploited.
Leslie Nielsen had a lot of straight dramatic roles but apparently showed his cut-up side to his co-workers. After he was finally cast in Airplane his funny side took off more than his serious side ever did.

I first saw him on TV as Simon Templar, The Saint.
