The coming 3.0 apocalypse

OK, Legionnaires, it looks like it's really happening: Most of this site's data has been copied to a new Ning 3.0 site: captaincomicsnew.ning.com. Theoretically, that means that when I give the OK, Ning will do some magic to make the new site take over the old site's (this site's) URL.

There a couple of holdups before then, however.

  • The Baron's Timelines didn't move over, but that got fixed this morning.
  • The Reviews didn't move over, but that got fixed this morning.
  • Mr. Silver Age didn't move over, but Ning told me they're working on it.
  • My "My Page" didn't move over, and I assume that's true of everyone until I'm told different. I don't know if that will be fixed. (Hint: Save things on your "My Page" that you really like to some other program.)
  • Most of my saved material for "Comics Guide" didn't copy over. I'm told that's because the data is still transferring. If it doesn't work, I've got a lot of copying to do. That affects no one but me, so forget I mentioned it.

How do this affect you?

Well, first and most importantly, the data transfer took place yesterday, July 10. I don't know this for a fact, but I'm guessing that when we switch over, nothing posted after July 10 will be on the "new" site. We may have to manually cut-and-paste some stuff over -- and by "we" I mean each individual copying over what's important to him or her.

Yes, we will have access to the "old" site (the current one), until I pull the plug. I don't know yet what the mechanism for accessing it will be, but I suspect it will be just a matter of Ning assigning it a new URL. I'm paid through the end of August, so hopefully everyone will have copied over what they want by then, and I can kill it (and not pay for another year). If not, then I will pay for another year.

Should I start working on the new site instead of this one?

I don't know if the new site actually works yet, or if Ning's continued tinkering and data transfer will interfere with new information being added. It seems like a treacherous move. So for now, I suggest working on this site as usual, but bear in mind that some copying may happen in the future.

I might hold off on "permanent" posts for a day or two, like Jeff and Bob's Silver Age Super-people thread, just so there's less copying for you to do in the future.

For my part, I'm continuing to save PR for future Comics Guides, but I'm saving them to a single post that I can cut and paste in one fast move.

Why does the new site look so lame?

You've got me. It's like the ledding has been exaggerated, and/or certain buttons are just labels now.  I thought this was supposed to be an improvement!

I'm hoping some of that will fix itself when we go "live." If not, maybe we can change some of the defaults -- I hope Ning can do it, but if not, I hope I can enlist some computer-savvy Legionnaires to do it.

Questions?

I might not have any answers, but feel free to ask.

  • Just as a test, I copied my post on "The Secret of the Super-Orphan!" over to the new site. Sorry of that was out of line, Skipper! (Not other people's comments, though, sorry!)  I'll keep  an eye on it for a day or so.   I won't post anything new in the Supergirl thread until Thursday, though.

  • Also, this may be an  "in progress" kind of thing, but the "pinned"  threads don't seem to be "pinned" onthe new site.

  • I think so. That’s just a setting on 2.0. I’ll poke around and see if I can find it.

I just took a look on the new site at a thread, selected at random ("How Wrong Is This James Bond Article?") and see that the posts are in reverse chronological order, with the most recent at the top. Can that be fixed?

  • I think I speak for everyone in saying we should all do what we need in the next couple of weeks to make sure you don't have to pay for an extra year.

  • No, feel free to experiment, Bob!

I just got word from Ning that posts since Monday will be updated when we go "live," and I hope that's true. If you end up with a duplicate post then we can just delete it.

  • Eh, I have no answer there. But pinning stuff is pretty easy (or is on 2.0) so if they stay that way we can just re-pin them.

  • Thanks, Skipper!

  • See, for what it's worth, I prefer to see the board that way - latest posts first.

  • If I am reading this correctly, currently the 2.0 site is captaincomics.ning.com and 3.0 is captaincomicsnew.ning.com, and that after the cutover, 3.0 with be captaincomics.ning.com and 2.0 will be something else. Is that right?

I clicked the link to captaincomicsnew.ning.com (3.0) and got a "blank" site with no topics whatsoever. I didn't try creating an account. A couple of years ago, Ning arbitrarily made me change my password from the one I'd had for 20 years. It didn't like my first choice, not my second, nor my third. Finally I changed it to something Ning liked, but I have no idea what. Consequently, I just keep myself logged in 24/7. (If I ever get logged out for whatever reason, I'm screwed because I have no idea what my "secure" password is.)

I intend to follow Bob's lead and not post anything new (nothing "important" anyway) for a couple of days until you give the all clear. I don't know what I'll do if I have to log in again using my current name and password, though.

  • I logged into the new sitew just  fine without having to change anything.
