I'm looking forward to this, mainly because of the presence of Alan Tudyk. But I assume that's not really the title; that's just what IMDb.com shows. We probably won't find out what the title is until the show airs — or maybe even later. For some reason, episode titles on a lot of shows have become state secrets.

CROSSOVERS/EVENTS
Future State (DC Comics)
Future State: Aquaman #1 (of 2)
Art and cover by Daniel Sampere
Card stock variant cover by Khary Randolph ($4.99)
Written by Brandon Thomas
$3.99 US | 32 Pages | 1 of 2 | FC
When Jackson Hyde accepted the mantle of Aquaman, he didn’t expect to also have to mentor Andy Curry, Arthur and Mera’s teen daughter. Nor did he expect that he and Andy would get sucked into the Confluence — an interdimensional nexus that connects distant planets and galaxies through the One Great Ocean. And he certainly didn’t expect to lose Andy in the process of trying to find their way back home. Now Jackson’s not sure how long he’s been stuck in a prison on Neptune (five years?) or how many times he’s tried to escape (200 at least!). But today Jackson saw something in the water that gave him hope for the first time in a long time — and his captors have no idea what he’s got in store for them.
One of the weird — and kinda cool — aspects of Future Tense NOT happening all in the same time frame is the possibility of seeing new characters at different ages. Such is the case with "Andy," the daughter of Aquaman and Mera, who is seen in Future State: Aquaman in her teen, in-training years, then as an adult in Future State: Justice League.

Back in the early days of the Magistrate’s occupation of Gotham City, Bruce Wayne found himself pushed to the edge like never before. So calling the Man of Steel in for backup makes sense, right? Wrong. Gotham’s sinister overlords have already sprung the ultimate trap on the Last Son of Krypton...and with Kryptonian power at your command, no one can stand in your way! Plus...where on Earth did Professor Pyg get a Kryptonite scalpel? Brace yourselves, because things are going to get gross in the caverns below Gotham ...
Looks like Batman should have called in Wonder Woman for backup instead!

Bruce Wayne is supposed to be dead ... but this Dark Detective is on the run and shining a light on the mystery of his own “murder”: How did the killers know Bruce Wayne was Batman? As the forces of the Magistrate zero in on Bruce’s location, it’s a race against time to unlock the secrets of their surveillance tech and take the fight to the very top! But is the knowledge that Bruce’s own legacy helped to enable the greatest authoritarian force the city of Gotham has ever seen too much to bear?
“Red Hood” written by Joshua Williamson, art by Giannis Milonogiannis
Also in this issue, Jason Todd is a haunted man. He’s working a job he hates on the violent streets of Gotham City as a mask hunter for the Magistrate! He takes contracts to catch villains—or heroes—and brings them in alive—mostly. But when the Red Hood gang reemerges, Jason must solve a mystery that could doom the city.

“Black Skies” Part 1!
Conan rings in the New Year on Ryker’s Island — which he promptly breaks out of with the help of ... Deadpool. The two warriors fight together against the symbiotes of Knull, and Conan makes a surprising discovery that may help him overcome Kulan Gath.
I've never read an issue of this title, but confess to being fascinated by its preposterous premise. Seriously, Conan and Deadpool teaming up? And it's not a Dave Sim book? I wouldn't have imagined that in a fever dream. If they ever do an omnibus, I'll be first in line. It would be fun to spend a few hours in the stabby-verse before retreating to the real world.

Before the New Teen Titans, there were the original Teen Titans. In the tumultuous 1970s, in an America that was very different than today but in many ways all too familiar, the trials and tribulations of these young heroes were witnessed by two of DC’s first Black superheroes: Karen Beecher-Duncan, better known as Bumblebee, and Mal Duncan — even if their versions of events are often at odds. And across that decade, they fought for their seats at the Titans’ table while joining the battle against injustice.
The long-awaited miniseries written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, Let It Fall) and beautifully illustrated by Giussepi Camuncoli and Andrea Cucchi continues to look at the mythology of the DC Universe as seen through the prism of DC Super Heroes who come from traditionally disenfranchised groups.
Trade-waiting this. Fingers crossed it's not just pandering, and is a thoughtful look from a different perspective.
FIRST ISSUES
Once again, there are a lot of first issues this week by small-press indies. I don't have anything to say, since I don't know any more than you do (and possibly less), so let's hope their PR speaks for them.

Riverdale Presents: South Side Serpents one-shot
Script: David Barnett
Art: Richard Ortiz, Matt Herms, Jack Morelli
Archie / 32-page / full color comic / $3.99
Jughead Jones and the South Side Serpents biker gang are roaring into their own solo comic book this January from Archie Comics. The special one-shot issue — inspired by the hit CW series Riverdale — comes from writer David Barnett with art by Richard Ortiz, Matt Herms, and Jack Morelli and follows Jughead on a dangerous solo mission to revive the Serpents for his father.
"Focusing on the South Side Serpents gave me a chance to bring in the darkness and edginess of Riverdale but blend that with a little fun, as well," David Barnett said. "I hope fans of the show and fans of the comics will both be able to get a lot out of the story, which features some familiar faces including Jughead, FP Jones, and Toni Topaz. . . . I got to throw all my Kerouackian road trip fantasies in with Hunter S. Thompson’s Hell’s Angels, and add a very healthy dollop of one of my favorite movies, The Warriors."
Richard Ortiz set the tone for what we can expect from the book, visually: "My personal Archie-style coordinates are Jaime Hernandez and Fiona Staples. I'm a big fan of Twin Peaks, which is in the DNA of the Riverdale series, and classic Archie with its suburban Americana aesthetic that is in the core of the David Lynch series. So I had this full circle of inspirations and links to work with, and have lots of fun."
"I've known David and Richard a long time and have wanted to work with both of them," said Archie Comics Co-President Alex Segura. "David's a pro -- a journalist who's written some great comics. Richard has a clean, memorable line and is an editor's dream. So, when we knew we wanted to spotlight the South Side Serpents corner of the Riverdale universe, it made sense to pair them together. The end result is a dark, compelling, and unique take on some of fans' favorite characters — plus plenty of surprises."
It still strikes me as funny that the angle this show took to make a real-life Jughead work was to make him a biker. That's pretty darn close to the MAD parody of the character from the 1940s!

"Trade-waiting this. Fingers crossed it's not just pandering, and is a thoughtful look from a different perspective."
Cap, I think you'll be happy with the Other History of the DC Universe when you get to it. I commented on the first issue in "What Comics Have You Read today?" and started a thread to discuss the remaining two issues.
" 'Cursed children' seems redundant to me."
Okay, this next anecdote has absolutely nothing to do with comic books, but I was reading the letters to the editor in today's paper. Each Sunday, the Dallas Morning News groups together letters on a chosen like topic. Today's themed topic was the vaccine roll-out. The DMN does a good job of putting together an equal number of pro and con letters most weeks (except for the storming of the Capital; no one was for that), and in one of today's "con" opinions, the letter-writer said that the term "sign-up system" is an oxymoron. Huh?
Is “sign-up” used as a noun or an adjective? “Sign-up” as a noun may describe a process or a system. For example, “when I was an undergraduate in the 1970s course sign-up was done manually in the gym, while today it is done on-line.”
However, that doesn’t make “sign-up system” an oxymoron. It becomes a redundancy, such as “ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) machine,” or “PIN (Personal Identification Number) number.” Wikipedia has a page on this (“RAS [Redundant Acronym Syndrome] syndrome”).
I don’t see the oxymoron (apparent contradiction), either.
They may be trying to say that the sign-up system isn't a very good system.
Exactly. He was trying to say that the sign-up system (in Richardson, TX) isn't very systematic.
(But that's still not an oxymoron.)
"I don’t see the oxymoron (apparent contradiction), either."
Oh! Did you think I thought "cursed children" was an oxymoron? No, it just reminded me of something i read earlier in the day. It also reminded me of this:
"I LOVE kids! The only think I love more than kids is doing anything I want at all times." - Sarah Silverman
I remembered that Jeff was a fan of The Other History of the DC Universe, I thought the first issue was really boring. Which is a huge disappointment because I really like Black Lightning. Sorry, when I get a superhero comic I want some action. I'm still on the hook for issue 2, because of pre-ordering it. Then again I thought the original series was really boring.
Cap, put me down as another person who really loved The Other History of the DC Universe. The original never really thrilled me -- despite the wonderful art -- because the history itself seemed like a pretty dry recitation of facts. "This happened, then this happened, etc." Other History takes a similar prose-and-pictures approach, but the difference is the prose is infused with personal perspective. I haven't read issue 2 yet, but I'm really looking forward to it.
