DEATHSTROKE INC. #11

DETECTIVE COMICS #1062

Story: Ram V & Simon Spurrier | Art: Rafael Albuquerque & Dani | Covers: Evan Cagle, Inhyuk Lee,  Lee Bermejo, J.H. Williams III | $4.99

A new ongoing creative team is taking over the storied Detective Comics, with writer Ram V (Catwoman, The Many Deaths of Laila Starr) and artist Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire, Superman/Batman).

Starting with Detective Comics #1062, Batman finds himself in a strange, dark Gotham City as he’s pulled into a high Gothic story like nothing he’s seen, or heard, before.

The story starts with “Gotham Nocturne” part 1 of 4: “Overture.” Something is terribly wrong with Batman. No matter the tests Bruce takes, nor the numbers he counts, the greatest detective in the world can’t pin down the source of this creeping dread — of his own inner demons and a looming mortality. He’s not alone in the grips of this terror, as it seems real demons are creeping through the shadows of Gotham City, answering the clarion call of a strange melody that’s haunting Gotham … and seems to be turning its denizens into something else.

The curtains are rising on a new, terrifying mystery as Batman tries to figure out what’s happening to both the city he protects and his own mind in this lush, operatic mystery.

Writer Ram V said of joining Detective Comics, “It's a thrill to be writing a title with the kind of history and pedigree that Detective Comics has. When the opportunity first came across my desk, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. For me, the draw of Batman as a character and that of the world around him had always been this blanket of tragedy that lay above it all. So, with that perspective, ‘Gotham Nocturne’ is a quintessentially Batman story, told with the aesthetics of a gothic opera.”

He added, “I'm lucky to be working with a fantastic group of creatives and editors on the project. It is hard to envision a more perfect set of collaborators than Rafael Albuquerque and Dave Stewart. Both of them are already titans in their own right but I think they are great fits particularly for the aesthetic lens of the story. I cannot wait for readers to experience what we're creating. It is an ambitious story. One that is hopefully worthy of the title that puts the DC in DC!"

Artist Rafael Albuquerque also shared his excitement about telling this story. “Batman is a legend we all grew up with and most of us spent a lot of time just imagining what we would do if we were in this position. That’s how serious Batman is to me and I have been lucky enough to do a little bit of it over my time as an artist. Ram V brings something special to the table. Unique. Ram’s story not only matches my vision of this beloved character but also twists it, elevating it to another level, making me want to be part of this special new take, that I think is going to be as special to the fans as it’s been for me.”

Each issue of Detective Comics will also feature a back-up story by writer Si Spurrier (John Constantine: Hellblazer, Suicide Squad: Blaze) exploring other stories of Gotham City — starting with Jim Gordon’s return as a private investigator. Artist Dani (Arkham City: Order of the World) joins Si to tell this noir-tinged story as Gordon’s investigation weaves into Batman’s. Artist Ivan Reis will also return to the book in Issue #1066, as the story continues to wind through the shadowed back-alleys of Gotham City.

  • Hey, backup stories! I always appreciate backup stories. It's like sprinkles on a donut.

SUPERMAN: SPACE AGE #1 (OF 3)

Story: Mark Russell | Art/Cover: Mike Allred | Variants: Steve Rude, Nick Derington | 80 pages | $9.99

A SUPERMAN CLASSIC IN THE MAKING!

Meet  Clark  Kent,  a  young  reporter  who  just  learned  that  the  world  will  soon  come  to  an  end  (Crisis  on  Infinite Earths) and there is nothing he can do to save it. Sounds like a job for his alter ego ... Superman! Superman: Space Age is from critically acclaimed writer Mark Russell (One-Star  Squadron, The Flintstones) and Eisner-winner artist Mike Allred (Silver Surfer, Bowie: Stardust, Rayguns & Moonage Daydreams).

"This is a dream project for me,” said Mark Russell. “Not only because I get to work with a genius like Mike Allred, but because I've always found Superman such a philosophically fascinating character, one which forces us to ask how different would the world be if we chose to be our best selves?"

After years of standing idle, the young man from Krypton defies the wishes of his fathers to come out to the world as the first superhero of the Space Age. As each decade passes and each new danger emerges, he wonders if this is the one that will kill him and everyone he loves. Superman realizes that even good intentions are not without their backlash as the world around him transforms into a place as determined to destroy itself as he is to save it.

"SUPER pumped to finally reveal what we've been working on in secret for so long,” said Mike Allred.  “Easily my biggest project for DC yet. Working with Mark Russel and his brilliant script has been a blast!  Packed with head-spinning iconography, top tier characters, twists, thrills and chills, resulting in a powerful instant classic epic! It's been simultaneously intimidating and inspiring to meet the challenge of illustrating this phenomenal project!

Uniting  the  critically acclaimed writer Mark Russell and Eisner-winner Mike Allred for the first time,  this  series promises fans an unforgettable journey through U.S. history and culture starring our beloved characters.

  • Assuming good reviews, I'll get this in HC and place it next to Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?, Superman for all Seasons and All-Star Superman.

YOUNG JUSTICE: TARGETS #1 (OF 6)

Story: Greg Weisman | Art/Cover: Christopher Jones | Variants: Meghan Hetrick, Travis Mercer | 32 pages | $3.99 | Card stock variant $4.99

Queen Perdita has been kidnapped! Mysterious armored assailants have snatched the Vlatavan royal out from beneath Bowhunter Security, leaving Green Arrow and Black Canary poisoned and comatose in the process! Now a rallying cry echoes around the globe, and across super-teams, to band together and rescue Perdita! Continuing the story of Young Justice: Phantoms, now streaming on HBO MAX, is the six-issue, digital-first Young Justice: Targets.

Young Justice: Targets is written by Young Justice: Phantoms showrunner Greg Weisman, with art by storyboard artist Christopher Jones.

"It's been terrific working with Christopher Jones again on another Young Justice comic, and I'm really excited for the fans to read Young Justice: Targets,” said Writer Greg Weisman. “It's a fully canon six-issue mini-series, picking up right where Young Justice: Phantoms left off, with plenty of action, nearly our entire cast, and multiple new revelations."

"It's been an amazing journey years after working with Greg Weisman on Young Justice comics, getting the opportunity to help create storyboards for the most recent season of the TV show, and now returning to produce more comics,” said Artist Christopher Jones. “Between my growth as an artist and the fabulous color by Jason Wright I think these are the best-looking comics I've ever had a hand in creating. I love getting to help tell the stories of these characters, and I can't wait for fans to see where things go after Young Justice: Phantoms."

  • I found the Young Justice cartoon to be kind of a downer, and stopped watching it during, I think, the second season.

ZATANNA: THE JEWEL OF GRAVESEND TPB

Story: Alys Arden | Art/Cover: Jacquelin De Leon | Letters: Ariana Maher | 208 pages | $16.99

There's more to the mobsters, mystics and mermaids at the last stop on the D/F/Q trains: Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue.

Zatanna is not your typical New Yorker. She walks her giant rabbit on a leather leash down the boardwalk, lives in a colossal architectural wonder known as the Golden Elephant, had her first kiss in the Haunted Hell Gate ride — and wouldn’t have it any other way.

But the time for having fun in Luna Park comes to an end when a mystic’s quest for a powerful jewel unravels everything Zatanna thought she knew about herself and her beloved neighborhood. Mysteries and magic surround her as she reveals the truth about her family’s legacy, and confronts the illusion that has been cast over her entire life.

From the bewitching mind behind The Casquette Girls, Alys Arden, and with enchanting artwork by Jacquelin de Leon, comes the story of a girl stuck in the middle of a magical rivalry and forced to choose between love, family, and magic without hurting anyone ... or worse.

  • There's a rumor Dua Lipa will play Zatanna in the DCEU. I suppose to bring in the youngs? So good, if true? I guess?

Critically acclaimed European artist Ergun Gunduz rejoins Christopher Priest for an expanded reimagining of Forrest J Ackerman's classic origin story, with framing sequences set in the present day illustrated by Giovanni Timpano, the story explores the exotic world of Drakulon, the pressures that cause Vampirella to leave, and her first days on Earth, arriving on the day of the Apollo moon landing in 1969. Lost, alone, unable to speak or read our language, Vampirella makes her first friends (Pantha, Pendragon) and runs afoul of new enemies in this multifaceted period piece that revisits the world of the original 1970s Warren stories!

Discovering to her horror that her journey to Earth was actually a one-way trip, Vampirella grapples with depression and intense loneliness as she starts to build a new life and new community at the turbulent close of an unforgettable decade! Grab your go-go boots and Afro Sheen and join us for this most unusual expansion of a classic era!

  • "Drakulon" always made me roll my eyes. That should have been retconned away long ago. Or the spelling changed to "D'rk-L'on" or something.

THE MAGIC ORDER 3 #1 (OF 6)

Story: Mark Millar | Art/Cover: Gigi Cavenago | $3.99

Superstar writer Mark Millar launches the third volume of his smash-hit horror series with artistic genius Gigi Cavenago (Batman), The Magic Order 3 #1.

"I originally created The Magic Order as a TV series at Netflix, but convinced the guys to let me do a comic too and it's the best move I've ever made," said Millar. "I've been doing this job since I was 19 and this is my own personal favorite work. I've also had a chance to work with the absolute best artists in the industry here, spoiled with Olivier Coipel and Stuart Immonen on the first two columes, now Italian stallion Gigi Cavenago on the third. I want to try and get volume four out before the live action show streams so there's four trades on the shelves when it launches. So far so good!"

So far readers have met the American and British members of the Magic Order. Now it’s time to meet the Asian chapter, including a brilliant new major player in the upcoming live-action Netflix show — Sammy Liu. This issue will be a huge collector’s item.

  • At what point do you reckon Netflix is gonna realize it got suckered giving Mark Millar all those millions for IP that has yet to produce a single successful TV show?

Ant-Man, one of Marvel’s most iconic heroes, will celebrate his big 60th anniversary with a new limited series! Al Ewing, the writer who redefined Hulk in IMMORTAL HULK, now sets his sights on Ant-Man, delving into the character’s unique history to examine every hero who’s ever taken on the mantle! Joining him on this epic journey will be artist Tom Reilly. Known for his acclaimed work on the current THE THING series, Reilly’s stylish art will take readers on a brilliant adventure that begins in Marvel’s silver age and concludes in a strange new future. Each thrilling issue will focus on a different Ant-Man from Hank Pym to Eric O’Grady to Scott Lang as a brand-new future Ant-Man seeks to connect them all so they can face off against a threat only they can hope to defeat!

But will anyone come to his rescue? And who is the mysterious stranger who stalks him?

"For Ant-Man's ant-iversary, we wanted to go BIG with the world's smallest hero — burrowing an ant tunnel right through his 60-year history and far beyond, from the wild and wooly 1960s all the way to a future you'll have to see to believe!” Ewing promises. “You'll find out how Henry Pym, Scott Lang and Eric O'Grady impacted each other's lives in ways they never knew themselves — but who's the mysterious final member of this Ant-tastic Four? Tremble with ant-icipation, true believer — the answers are coming soon to a hill near you!"

“I’m very excited to work with Al again, this time to celebrate, and add to, the legacy of Ant Man!” Reilly says. “Several different people have taken the name, and Al’s written a fun story that gives them all a chance to shine. I also look forward to working with Jordie Bellaire again, her colors elevate any book that she’s on. There’s lots of inspiration to be taken from Ant Man’s rich artistic history, and there’ll be plenty of room for both of us to experiment in this series. I can’t wait for everyone to check it out!”

  • Is Hank Pym still dead? (Well, not dead dead, but floating in space as part of Ultron.) Is Eric O'Grady still dead? (Well, not dead dead, but a sentient LMD.) I've kind of lost track.

GAMBIT #1 (OF 5)

Story: Chris Claremont | Art: Sid Kotian | Colors: Espen Grundetgern | Letters: VC’s Clayton Cowles | Covers: Whilce Portacio & Alex Sinclair, Salvador Larroca & Edgar Delgado, Inhyuk Lee, Peach Momoko, Scott Williams & Sebastian Cheng | Teen+ | $3.99

The legend returns! Chris Claremont, the writer who defined the X-Men and crafted the franchise’s most influential stories, is back with a brand-new X-Men saga starring one his most popular co-creations — GAMBIT! Featuring artwork by rising star Sid Kotian, GAMBIT will be a five-issue limited series that invites fans back to the exciting time when Gambit and a de-aged Storm forged an everlasting bond as they thieved their way along the Mississippi River!

The series will unearth a wide range of previously untold adventures, from a brush with the Shadow King to an array of earthbound and out of this world escapades, that gives Claremont a chance to further explore Gambit’s path to becoming a heroic X-Man as well as reveal new insights into another trademark character of his, Storm, at a pivotal moment in her history. Get your first look at this story of action, intrigue and revenge in new interior artwork and variant covers by all-star artists Salvador Larroca, Peach Momoko, Scott Williams and InHyuk Lee!

When asked why he chose to revisit this specific era, Claremont told AiPT Comics: “Because I considered it somewhere that provided the opportunity for a whole-lotta-fun to be had by all involved. Think about it: who notices kids? The way Remy dresses, not to mention his great body and gorgeous looks, most of the time all eyes turn towards him. [Kid] ‘Ro remains functionally invisible. Target looks to Remy, ‘Ro picks his pocket. But the true reason, frankly, is that the story turned out to be a whole lot more fun this way.”

  • I think Gambit is one of my least-favorite X-Men. Bottom three, anyway. He just can't work as written.
  • A guy with red corneas and black sclera is not going to be a successful ladies' man. His accent is a cliche. His costume looks like it's from outer space, which is impractical for a sneak thief. I understand his charging-things-up power, but how do you throw a cardboard playing card for any distance or accuracy?
  • And I still argue that wearing a duster in New Orleans is preposterous. Have any of his writers ever been to New Orleans? Maybe one of his mutant powers is resistance to heat stroke. Regardless, he'd really stand out in a crowd, since in most cases he'd be the only one wearing any kind of coat.

GENIS-VELL: CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 (OF )

Story: Peter David | Art: Juanan Ramírez | Covers: Mike Mckone, Dan Jurgens, Peach Momoko, Juni Ba | Teen+ | $3.99

He’s back! Recently resurrected in ‘The Last of the Marvels,’ the latest story arc in Kelly Thompson’s hit run on CAPTAIN MARVEL, Genis-Vell will go on to star in an all-new limited series this June written by the creator who helped define him, the legendary Peter David! Announced earlier today at ComicsPRO, GENIS-VELL: CAPTAIN MARVEL will be a five-issue epic featuring artwork by electrifying artist Juanan Ramírez (DARKHAWK). The series will see the fan favorite Captain Marvel reunite with his former partner, Rick Jones, for the first time in decades for an adventure that spans the Marvel cosmos and a mystery involving Death itself.

Both now back in the land of the living, Genis-Vell and Rick Jones are about to come crashing back into each other! Can Rick Jones save Genis — and himself — before they both fade out of existence? Is Rick’s ex-wife, Marlo, the key? Find out in this surprising saga that will chart a new course through the Marvel Universe for Genis, Rick, and more!

“I never thought I'd have the opportunity to return to Genis, what with him being dead and all. But apparently death never lasts...which is actually one of the themes of the limited series I came up with,” David said. “It's great to be back with Genis, Rick, Marlo and the whole Genis-Vell gang.”

  • Man, am I Debbie Downer today. But here, sadly, is my second-least favorite Captain Marvel, part of the slacker superhero trend of the '80s. I really like Peter David's work, but this character never did it for me.
  • (My least favorite is the robot who yelled "Split!" in the '50s.)

WILD CARDS: THE DRAWING OF CARDS #1 (OF 4)

Story: Paul Cornell | Art: Mike Hawthorne | Cover: Steve Morris | Teen+ | $4.99

Marvel fans will get a chance to enter George R.R. Martin’s beloved WILD CARDS universe this June!

For the first time in comic book form, witness the very beginning of the Wild Cards mythos with an adaptation of the very first stories in the original Wild Cards novel. Based on stories by Harold Waldrop, Roger Zelazny and series master-mind and editor, George R.R. Martin, Wild Cards is a fascinating saga set in a whole new world reshaped by the emergence of superpowers. The limited series, titled THE DRAWING OF CARDS, will be written by a team of comic superstars, writer Paul Cornell and artist Mike Hawthorne, and serve as a perfect entry point for Wild Cards newcomers and a must-have new reimagining for Wild Cards aficionados!

Spanning more than 25 novels, 20 short stories, and written by more than 40 authors over three decades, the Wild Cards series tells the story of an alternate history where Earth is home to super-powered individuals. When a human is infected with the alien “Wild Card” virus, the odds are that they will be killed… which is referred to as “drawing the black queen”. Of those that survive, the bulk of them become “jokers”, left with some strange mutated form. A lucky few are called “aces”, those gifted with super powers they can put to use towards heroic goals … or villainous ones.

“Wild Cards is still a unique take on super heroes, a creation story that’s influenced everything since, but still maintains its power,” Cornell said. “It’s an honor and a pleasure to bring all these wonderful stories to their natural home at Marvel, and I hope to give George, Melinda and the rest of the Wild Cards Collective the credit they deserve for making the super hero myth new again. Plus: just look at that art!”

"As my fans may already know, the Wild Cards World holds a special place in my heart, so to have the privilege of announcing that an industry titan like MARVEL is going to produce the narrative from the beginning as a comic book brings me no end of joy," Martin added.

PS Artbooks Magazine | 68 pages | $18.99

Writers and Artists include Brendan Lynch, Gray Morrow, Norman Nodel, Stephen Hickman, Raymond Everett Kinstler, Alan Weiss, Paul Reinman, Alvin Hollingsworth, Vince Alascia, Mario Acquaviva.

Skywald's SCREAM #1, according to Al Hewetson’s introduction, was in response to readers’ opinions as expressed in the Bunch of Questions survey and was first published as a black-and-white comic magazine in August 1973. If you're brave enough take a peek, we’ve got "The Strange Painting of Jay Crumb" a spoof on underground cartoonists Jay Lynch & Robert Crumb by Felipe de la Rosa; and "The Comics Macabre" by Al Hewetson and Maelo Cintron, featuring characters based on Seduction Of The Innocent author Fredric Wertham & Comics Code Authority president Len Darvin as well as Hewetson, Herschel Waldman & other Skywald staffers. In the story Darvin and Wertham visit the Skywald offices to complain about the horror comics, get into an argument and kill Hewetson, whereupon tiny versions of Skywald’s Heap, Frankenstein’s Monster and others come off comic pages and kill Wertham and Darvin. Hewetson sent a copy of the story to Wertham, with whom he corresponded for a number of years but, according to Hewetson, Wertham didn’t get the point. Don’t hang around — these horrors will be gone by sunrise!

PS ARTBOOKS SOFTEE: BLACKHAWK VOLUME 1

232 pages | $32.99

The first in an 18-volume series in PS ARTBOOKS popular SOFTEE format, featuring the origin of Blackhawk from Military Comics and the first appearance in his own magazine, illustrated by Will Eisner and Reed Crandall.

This volume features Military Comics #1 (1941) and Blackhawk #9-12 (Winter 1944-Autumn 1946)

  • Wondering why Blackhawk begins at issue #9? Because it picked up the numbering of Uncle Sam Quarterly, canceled with issue #8.
  • It looks like this series will reprint Blackhawk only, with just the first Military Comics adventure included. That's a shame. The series should reprint all Blackhawk adventures chronologically, a practice which has become the standard in Golden Age DC omnibuses. Maybe someday.
  • And evidently, there will be no HC or Slipcase editions, much to my chagrin.
  • I've checked out Gwandanaland's version on Amazon, and only Blackhawk Vols. 7-10 (reprinting Blackhawk #42-68) are currently available in HC. I found parts of the Military/Modern run in various formats, but I'm not sure all of it was available in a single format. I'll wait until I see what I want.

PS ARTBOOKS MAGAZINE: EERIE #1

PS Softee edition | 36 Pages | $16.99

It was January 1947 that the first real, indisputable horror comic came along — EERIE COMICS #1, published by Avon. It had a striking cover that was, well … eerie, depicting a strange-looking man with a knife on the steps of some sort of ruin, approaching a bound woman — a theme that was to be repeated countless times in the future.

Whet your appetite on these horrors inside, including "The Eyes of the Tiger" by Bob Fujitani, featuring a pet tiger who gets his first taste for blood — no surprises there then? "Dead Man’s Tale," by Jon Small, gives us the story of a bottle that gave Myron Morgan wealth and how he died when it was destroyed. "The Man-Eating Lizards," by Joe Kubert: When a plane goes down in the ocean, the surviving crew members find themselves on an island of giant, man-eating lizards. "The Strange Case of Henpecked Harry." by Fred Kida, tells how Harry Horton plots the death of his wife, only to be driven mad by the guilt.

It’s hard to point to a particular source or inspiration, such as radio or the pulps, for any of these stories as they were not adaptations and didn’t come from any existing series — yet here they are together, as probably the world’s first true horror comic!

This issue covers Eerie Comics #1 (January 1974) by Avon.

  • I always thought that was Nosferatu on the cover. Now, given the opportunity for closer examination, I see it's apparently just a swipe.

THE YEAR OF VALIANT CONTINUES WITH THREE NEW TITLES: X-O MANOWAR UNCONQUERED, BLOODSHOT UNLEASHED & BOOK OF SHADOWS

THE YEAR OF VALIANT, a year-long campaign focused on putting fans first with each and every comic, continues to explore deeper into the iconic Valiant shared universe with three brand-new titles: BOOK OF SHADOWS, BLOODSHOT UNLEASHED, and X-O MANOWAR UNCONQUERED.

BOOK OF SHADOWS

SHADOWMAN. PUNK MAMBO. ETERNAL WARRIOR. DOCTOR MIRAGE. And [CLASSIFIED]. The supernatural protectors of the Valiant Universe unite for the very first time to stand against a terrifying ancient threat. No one is safe as Exarch Fane has his cold hands on the Book of Shadows. From the master of horror CULLEN BUNN and rising star artist RICCARDO LATINA, BOOK OF SHADOWS is a supernatural event that forms a brand-new team in the Valiant Universe... but will they be enough to stop Exarch Fane's wrath? The all-new team arrives this July.

BLOODSHOT UNLEASHED

When living weapons break out of a top-secret facility, the nanite-infused supersoldier BLOODSHOT must journey across the United States to stop these twisted and lethal creations from unleashing more bloodshed and devastation on the neglected small towns and forgotten corners of the country. Will Bloodshot need to kill all of them ... or can some of them be redeemed just like he was? From Ringo Award-nominated writer DENIZ CAMP and acclaimed artist JON DAVIS-HUNT comes BLOODSHOT UNLEASHED, the popular character's first mature readers story that truly lives up to its name. The mayhem begins this September.

X-O MANOWAR UNCONQUERED

Aric of Dacia is X-O MANOWAR, a relentless and brave warrior torn from the past who wields the most powerful sentient armor in the universe. When X-O's latest battle brings him into uncharted cosmic territory, he encounters a powerful enemy that will rip open old wounds and force Aric into treacherous, uncertain waters. AS A CARTOONIST HC

Story/Art: Noah Van Sciver | Fantagraphics | 100 pages | $19.99

A series of comic strips joined together by the theme of the author's chosen profession — cartooning — reveals a funny and often poignant reflection on the human condition and the lives we choose to live.

Acclaimed cartoonist Noah Van Sciver puts to use all the creative arrows in his quiver in this captivating collection of fiction, biography, memoir, and more. Van Sciver juxtaposes fictional stories about what life as a "19th Century Cartoonist" might have looked like with a series of autobiographical strips about life as a contemporary cartoonist, along with pieces about his father and childhood that inform the path in life he has chosen. The resultant effect is a routinely funny (Van Sciver never takes himself too seriously unless it is intended for comedic effect) but also deeply relatable book that touches on some of life's big questions, whether about the ways we measure happiness or success, the ways we often define ourselves by our careers, or ways we can sometimes lose sight of the most important things. Van Sciver displays a love of the history and form of cartooning that recalls Art Spiegelman, a Lynda Barryesque thirst to unpack ideas of what creativity really means, and a Harvey Pekar-like way of just trying to stay alive in the face of despair.

BIG SCOOP OF ICE CREAM GN

  • Here's another of what seems to me to be an endless stream of autobiographical graphic novels by introverted artists, most of whom aren't even 30 yet, who think every stray thought that flits through their head is as fascinating to us as it is to them. This book literally promises the author's "every adventure, from her apartment that she shares with a girl who's her mirror image, her household, her computer, her dreams to elsewhere, her escapes to the beach, her telephone conversations with friends, to her more or less happy dates."
  • Oh my! Conversations with friends! I can hardly wait!
  • This is honestly my least favorite kind of comics, and I wouldn't read one of these things with a gun to my head. YMMV.

  • "Does [SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW] belong on my bookshelf, Legionnaires?"

I started to "lose the story" several issues from the end reading on a monthly basis. I stopped reading with the intention of reading it in a sitting after it was complete, but I haven't done so yet. I was enjoying before that point, though.

SUPERMAN: SPACE AGE: Mark Russell is a writer whose work I follow regardless, and I similarly follow Mike Allred. Buying a Superman project with both of them together is a no brainer.

"Anyone want to figure out which comics constitute the first 899 issues of Amazing Spider-Man?"

Can’t blame your least favorite Captain Marvel on the 1950s.  It is 1960s Silver Age through and through.

Yikes! That was 1966, wasn't it? I had it in my head that it was 1956. That's what I get for not looking it up! Thanks!

"Anyone want to figure out which comics constitute the first 899 issues of Amazing Spider-Man?"

    I'll give it a shot.

    #1-441 - Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #1-441

    #442-700 - Amazing Spider-Man (1999) #1-58, #500-700

    #701-733 - Superior Spider-Man (2013) #1-33

    #734-751 - Amazing Spider-Man (2014) #1-18

    #752-756 - Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows (2015) #1-5

    #757-788 - Amazing Spider-Man (2015) #1-32

    #789-801 - Amazing Spider-Man (2017) #789-801

    #802-894 - Amazing Spider-Man (2018) #1-93

    #895-899 - Amazing Spider-Man (2022) #1-5

    Howzzat?

Pretty impressive, and I mean that sincerely.

But because I'm as anal-retentive as you, I have to wonder why Amazing Spider-Man: Renew My License or whatever it is counts more than Amazing Spider-Man #-1, Amazing Spider-Man #0, Amazing Spider-Man FCBD #0, Amazing Spider-Man #394 (flipbook), or Amazing Spider-Man #654.1, 679.1, 699.1, 700.1, 700.2, 700.3, 700.4 or 700.5. Those issues are, specifically and technically, issues of Amazing Spider-Man, whereas Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows has a different name.

    How do you reconcile this?

    Wait: Jerry Siegel?!?

Google tells me that Jerry Siegel worked on this British character in the 60s.

  • "How do you reconcile this?"

How do I reconcile this? I don't. AFAIAC, a new (but similar) universe is created every time Marvel renumbers a series. The question is, how does Marvel reconcile it? Sometimes they count the "zero issues" or the "negative ones," other times they don't as it suits them depending on which artificial milestone they're trying to rejigger. Issues #789-801 were the official Marvel count as of the short-lived "Marvel Legacy" numbering, and it's pretty straightforward after that (i.e., 801 + 93 + 5 = 899). As to why "Renew Your Passport" is included when some of the other comics you mention are not, the math doesn't work because "five" is called for. Someday they may decide not to include that series in favor of the other numbering you mention as the mood strikes them.

  • I hear you, and "because 'five' is called for" is as good a reason as any. I know this first-hand, because I tried to reconcile some of Marvel's "anniversary" issues back when they first started doing legacy-numbering anniversaries. I realized pretty quickly that, to use the technical phrase, they were "making $#!& up."

Further, the GCD uses much the same numbering as you did, and doesn't bother to explain why, for example, Renew Your Vows first series (five issues) is included, but not Renew Your Vows second series (23 issues). Also, GCD includes the minus-one issue and all the dot-this and dot-that books under the Amazing Spider-Man listings, but does not include them for purposes of legacy numbering.  Meanwhile, Renew Your Vows and Superior Spider-Man have separate listings, but are included in the legacy numbering anyway.

I don't know if GCD chose to do this on their own, or someone checked with Marvel, but either way the numbers do work, so what the heck.

  • Mile  High Comics lists all of Marvel's "negative one" books as if "minus" were part of the title: Spider-Man Minus #1. That's a handy way to deal with such issues in a database not set up to handle negative numbers but, mathematically, such issues should count against the total because adding a negative is the same as subtracting. For example, if Snotman has 100 issues and one "negative one" that should be 99 issues total because 100 + "negative one" = 99. It goes without saying that a "zero" issue should not be included in the total at all. (Proof: 1 + 0 = 1)

You know I love you, Jeff, but ... that makes absolutely no sense.
