  • What's special about the Eagle and Child?
  • C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien's writer's group, the Inklings, frequently met there. (It was just mentioned in last week's Unwritten, strangely enough.)
  • I've never been there, but Poe's grave in Baltimore seems like a good one to me.

Back when I was in high school, some friends and I went into Philadelphia to go to the house where Poe lived for a few years. When asking for directions, we honest-to-god got this response: "The po' house? Why in hell do you kids wanna go to the po' house?"

I think he was just kidding us, but he had no idea where it was (no one did, though we eventually found it), and we made sure to say "the Edgar Allen Poe house" after that.

  • Ah, thanks, Rob.
  • New York City for me. It's like Disneyland for adults. I see Thor and Avengers quinjets flying overhead, Spider-Man swinging between buildings, Daredevil perched atop skyscapers, Hulk running amok.

I've driven past that cemetery countless times, but finally took the time to get out of the car and look at it last fall.

Sadly, it seems the tradition of the "Poe Toaster" -- a gentleman dressed all in black who would leave three roses and a bottle of cognac on the grave each January 19, the anniversary of Poe's birthday -- has ended; the gent failed to show this year or last year.
  • A place I want to see someday    And it's reasonably far away from the rad-zone.

I've been here. Nice place to visit, if you're in the area.

  • San Diego Comic Con was it for me.
