If you've been to your LRS lately, I'm sure youve seen Bruce Springsteen's new "Best of" collection.
If so, I'll bet you're wondering how it compares to Bruce Springsteen Greatest Hits (1995).
Don't worry; I've got you covered.
Note that he is carrying the same 1950s Fender Esquire on both covers. It looks to me as if the "Best of" cover is taken from the same photo session that yeilded the cover of Born to Run.
Both "Best of" and "Greatest Hits" have 18 songs each, with the following 11 in common:
Born to Run
Thunder Road
Badlands
Hungry Heart
Atlantic City
Dancing in the Dark
Born in the U.S.A.
Briliant Disguise
Human Touch
Streets of Philadelphia
Secret Garden
In addition, each album has seven songs not found on the other.
This is an excellent overview of Brian Wilson's Beach Boys career, plus all of the songs are chosen by Brian Wilson himself.
PET SOUNDS:
All my life I had heard how influential this album was, then when I heard it for the first time (when I was in high school), I thought, "Eh, that's not so great." But, in my ignorance, I was listening to it against a backdrop of the music I had grown up with. What I should have been comparing it to was all of the pop music from several years lading up to the release of Pet Sounds. (In that respect, it is not unlike Marvel comic books.) Pet Soundsdirectly influenced Sgt. Pepper, and indirectly everything that came after. I have it on CD, I have it on vinyl, I have it in stereo, I have it in mono.
SMILE:
Brian Wilson's masterpiece. He performed it live in 2004 one municipality over from where we live, but I didn't find out about it until the day after. We checked his tour scedule and found out he was playing the next weekend in Phoenix. We had friends in Phoenix at the time, and flew out there just to catch that show.

Surprising how few of the early Beach Boys songs were selected for the "Classics" album.
Through the years there has been so much hype over the "Smile" album that I find it difficult to give the music an honest assessment.
When I was in high school I bought the "Smiley Smile" album from a dollar bin mainly because it included "Good Vibrations". I think I listened to it twice all the way through then filed it away never to be listened to again.

Smiley Smile, I must admit, is a guilty pleasure of mine.
There is, also, a Beach Boys version of Smile, pieced together from recording sessions made at the time.
