I didn't entirely get the intended construction of the jokes in the Sunday Bizzaro (Sp??) strip yesterday .   ( The strip appars to be not online , as it is a King Features Syndicate strip , who - Gasp !!! - appear to think they're in the comics business to make money , and keep their strips behind a wall . )

The joke was " variations on ' I Love New York ' "...but was the panhandler's shirt supposed to be saying " I Owe New York " ?"  I Have Zero , New York " ?

The yokel , in Middle Ages garb...Was his shirt suppost'a mean " I Love York " , as in the English county that New York was indeed named after ??? ( And Prince Charles is now considered the Duke of , if I recall correctly . )

    • Honestly, Rob, I based my opinion solely on that smattering of art posted above. I read the comments you posted elsewhere and I will certainly give it more than a cursory glance should the opportunity ever arise.

    • Cool. I bet you'll like it.

  • The Dallas Morning News has stopped running current Doonesbury Sundays, at least temporarily, and I couldn't be more disappointed.

    OCTOBER 6

I might not have caught it but today they ran an annual Spring "graduation speech" strip. Checking the fine print, I saw it was dated 2019. The strip intended for today was run last week. I don't remember what they ran on September 29.

    • The 9/29 and 10/6 strips you say they didn't print are both attacking Trump. If they printed today's surfer gag. which is dated 10/13, then they are avoiding Doonesbury's anti-Trump stuff as an editorial policy. That would be even more disappointing.

    • Doing a little digging, it seems that your newspaper has been owned by Gannett for a while now and that they have been dropping various strips from (apparently) hundreds of papers for budgetary reasons. It was stated that they dropped Doonesbury this past January, which doesn't sound like it fits what you've seen.

    • Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that they have dropped Doonesbury, only that they didn't run the Trump strips. Apparently, something was said about it (by editorial or a reader, I don't know) in Wednesday's paper, which is not part of my subscription. (I take the paper on Friday, Saturday, Sunday.) There was some mention of what was said on Wednesday in Friday's paper. We have a fairly new Public Editor who has been running editorials and letters lately about gaining (or regaining) readers' trust. I sent an e-mail to him today, and so far have received only the following automated reply.

"Thank you for contacting the public editor. This office deals specifically with issues of journalistic integrity at
The Dallas Morning News. The public editor is a bridge between our audience and readers and our journalists
      and editors.

"My assistant and I read every message, but due to the number of e-mails that we receive daily,
we cannot respond personally to everyone who writes. If a further reply is warranted,
you will hear from us within 48-72 hours."

  •  The Dallas Morning News ran another substitute Doonesbury for today, OCTOBER 20. I did not receive a personal reply to the letter I sent last week (nor did I expect one), but they did print the following disclaimer in today's comics section along with the reprint:

"Note to readers: The Dallas Morning News is committed to fair and balanced coverage and has found recent politically themed Doonesbury comics not up too our standards. When this happens, we print replacements provided by the syndicate or from our archives."

  • I am remiss in not pointing out that The Washington Post started running its daily (Monday through Saturday) comics in color last month. It did so by dedicating the back cover and inside back cover of the daily Style section to the comics. Prior to that, the comics pages floated within the section from one day to the next, but they were always in the second half of the section.

I don't know how many other newspapers carry the daily comics in color. The crosstown paper* has carried its comics in color for years.

    * I almost said "rival" but that's like calling your neighborhood elementary Pee-Wee baseball team a rival to a Major League Baseball team.

  • The Dallas Morning News didn't run the current Doonesbury again today, so I figure as long as I went to the trouble to look it up, I might as well post a link to it here.

  • Another Doonesbury not run by the DMN in the run-up to the 2024 Presidential election.
